Moving forward

Garza is gone. Nunge is gone. Joe W? JBo?

If all four are done: need one starting-caliber center, one back up center preferably a defensive stopper, one wing with an outside shot who can defend, and an experienced 2 with an excellent 3-point shot to come off the bench for instant offense.

IF -- a big IF -- the staff could land such a bounty, the lineup might be:

Transfer Center
Keegan Murray
Transfer Wing
CJ
Joe T

PG: Ulis, CMac
SG: Perkins, Transfer Guard
W: PMac
F: Kris, PMac
C: Transfer Center, Josh O

I think it will be difficult to land many decent transfers to come in and play backup positions, FWIW. Not impossible, but difficult. It will be a lower quality prospect that would transfer for that kind of role (see Bakari Evelyn).

That said, with Nunge leaving, it seems like we have a pretty good sales pitch for a quality, experienced, post player.

I think we could be looking at something like this:

5-Transfer post player / Ogundele
4-Ke. Murray / C. McCaffery*, Sandfort
3-P. McCaffery / Kr. Murray
2-Fredrick / Perkins
1-Toussaint** / Ulis

*Connor remains a pretty big variable. Depending on his health and interest, I could see him starting, coming off the bench, or taking time to focus on baseball.

**And, of course, Bohannon is now a variable as well. If Jordan comes back, he likely starts (to the chagrin of many fans), and one or both of Toussaint and Ulis transfer out.

With so many guys leaving, (4 out of top 7) theres plenty of opportunities.

We assume we know who's stepping into those roles but it appears from the perspective of a transfer that PT should be up for grabs.

Bring in 3 or 4 players and make everyone compete for PT.

You might be right. But personally, if I'm a kid in the transfer portal, I'm going to look for a guaranteed opening, or as close to guaranteed as possible. Especially when a couple of the guys I might be competing with for playing time/starting positions are the coach's kids.

I think Kris was a better rebounder than Keegan prior to Iowa, so he could back up at the 4. Sandfort will NOT be a 4, as i think he only weighs 200+-, so he should be a 3 and possibly a 2.

I thought I remember Kenyon saying that Kris was behind Wieskamp and Patrick, who are generally considered "3s". Either way, we probably spend too much time worrying about specific positions for a lot of these guys, as we trend toward positionless basketball.

Not that Iowa is the only one dealing with some of these issues like Weiskamp possibly leaving, and JBo possibly coming back, but the clock is ticking. Clearly we are in need of a viable big man of some
sort (I know some want to go with the full lineup of 6'6" hybrids), and some have already signed.

If I'm Fran, I thank JBo for his contributions and tell him his career at Iowa is over so everybody else can get on with it. Waiting for legislation to pass or not is not a good way to assemble a roster IMO (while admitting I have very little idea of the timeframe, but it's Legislation, so not much more needs to be said). I would also like Fran to tell Connor to concentrate on Baseball. I don't expect either of those things to happen however.

That's the elephant in the room. You can bet that it is used in pitches by other teams to players considering Iowa, fair or not. Who is going to play? You or the coach's kid?

McCaffery really needs to get with the times regarding transfers. He has personally seen the damage they can do in the games we played against them. And he has a lot of attractive options to sell: Plenty of playing time, great conference, every game on tv, great college town (assuming the virus lets them experience it), decent facilities, decent crowds and a team family atmosphere.
This is a critical year for the Iowa program and for McCaffery. We don't want to wind up like the disaster on the other side of the state who has to brag about their water while they patrol the bottom of their conference.

Yes. And it will be a bigger issue for transfers than it is with high school recruits. Transfers are going to want immediate playing time. Incoming freshmen (some of them) might be willing to bide their time.

In my opinion Fran has kind of painted himself into a corner w/Connor. Talk about the elephant in the room. So it sounds like he needs some kind (not sure what) of double hip surgery. If he's available, and decides to come back, he's starting. We all know it. At what position I have no idea. We clearly need a transfer big of some kind, but so do 100 other teams. CJ can't seem to play a full season and stay healthy, so his future is also up in the air. I actually don't mind playing a little smaller and playing Murray as kind of a stretch 5, especially on the offensive end, but defensively is another story. I don't see Weiskamp coming back. If he does we will be solid. Starting lineup of Joe W, Keegan, Patrick, Joe T and CJ is still a NCAA tourney team in my opinion. Ulis and Perkins key contributors off the bench. Without Joe W it gets much dicier.
