MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough blames LA ‘hellscape’ wildfires on slashed spending: 'Failure of government’

Perhaps they are simply asking the government to spend the money they've already collected on the right things?,.. things like water perhaps.
They don't collect the kind of money that they would need to make a water system do what they want it to do. There's a reason cities don't plan on a water system that can fight a fire in every building in the city at the same time.

This. It’s a common misconception that conservatives don’t want the government to spend money. They just want the government to spend it wisely.

I don't know about this thread but it is in several other threads. And for clarification, every time someone wonders why there wasn't more water available they are asking the government to spend more money.

I think we can all agree that it should be unacceptable that ANY fire hydrant is dry or has low water pressure. This has been a HUGE issue in fighting these LA fires, of course.

What the OP missed I believe was that government is adversely affected by $$ and power. That is not necessarily a R/D thing but a government thing.
People don’t like taxes so items like infrastructure are often ignored. Folks with $$ and power want to buy and develop land that should never be developed but government acquiesces to them. Private industry is backing away from these practices because they are losing $$..People expect the “government” to cover their risks by insuring them…but scream “bloody murder@ when their tax bill increases…it’s “chesoer@ to maintain old and inadequate infrastructure than it is to modernize/rebuild it.

Pretty sure this isn't a good thing.

In 1994 state water officials, water infrastructure contractors, and agricultural landowners with water rights arranged a secretive meeting at a resort in Monterey Bay California.

These groups, a mix of private companies and public agencies, rewrote California’s water laws without any input from voters, taxpayers, or legislators.

Pretty sure this isn't a good thing.

Just a question: In 30 years has it occurred to the Democratic legislators running CA to do something about this?

The Resnicks donate millions of dollars to politicians and research institutions, which help them secure control over water systems, and even get more water and more taxpayer funding.

One important project is the proposed California Delta Tunnel, a taxpayer funded project which would send water from Northern California to Central, where the Resnicks’ farms are. They’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on California and federal legislation and politicians who support the tunnel project.

But their favorite politician is Senator Diane Feinstein, chair of the Energy and Water subcommittee. She’s a close personal friend of the Resnicks, attending their holiday parties in Aspen and maintaining their financial interests.

Pretty sure this isn't a good thing.

Just a reminder, the annual budget for the LA City Water Department is north of $2.6B. That’s larger than many nation’s annual GDP.

I don’t think the issue is the top-line revenue requiring more taxes. Might be the # beneath the line…
They are pumping water in from hundreds of miles away right now…Vegas and the mountains…their expenses are very high…abd the existing infrastrucre is inadequate… and cities and states can’t print money….it needs more revenues…and that beans higher taxes from somewhere.

No.

Below is a picture of the Water Dept HQ. You don’t build a structure like this for professionals whose answer is always “more money!!”

Professionals use what they have, run efficiently, plan for the future, and proactively work with county, state, and federal gov’t to solve anticipated issues. We should expect more of our public officials to use what they are given wisely in the public interest.

Understand… kinda like banks and insurance companies…everyone builds these monuments to themselves…it’s what people do.

Thread title should be Fran posts out of context link that drew Northern like a moth to a flame. I guess it’s nice that Fran took a break from constantly churning his threads on the basketball board.
I watched that segment and he went on to savage his own state of Florida for allowing unfettered development in hurricane prone areas.
