This is my first post under this moniker. Haven't posted in years. I used to go under Matt Foley - the original one, not the duplicated and often bastardized off-shoots. I set Tom Kakert with his HawkeyeReport TV show on Mediacom 22, Saturdays on ESPN2. Tom can vouch for me in terms of sincerity when I post.

Anyhoo, lot's of chatter on this board and on the interwebz about MSU reaching out to Narduzzi.

You may be interested to know that that Iowa picked Oregon's brain about MSU this weekend....the same Oregon the Iowa FB staff visited this summer.

Take that for whatever it's worth.

Toodles.

Drinkin Buddy.

Note that both Iowa and Oregon play 2-gap on the line (with different fronts - UI 43, UO 34), BUT they are both heavy in zone scheme with few blitzes.

Interesting. If Iowa is smart, they will attack the flats / slot area. That is the weakness of the MSU defense and Oregon was very effective with this. However, MSU held Oregon to 28 points and that included a Punt Return for a TD...

Oregon also had their lowest yardage total in over 2 years in that game...just sayin.

Great info btw. I love this stuff

Defensively, I am not sure Oregon is the team I would contact but I am sure they learned something

Pitt blocked a punt for a TD against Iowa. So, take away each special team TD and the margins become 10-10...same difference.

Oregon outgained MSU 432-389 with an FCS QB (2nd game, no spring or summer work...showed up for fall camp after summer school) replacing a Heisman winner.

309 (22-39) passing for Oregon...192 (20-32) passing for MSU.

BTW, Conner Cook isn't exactly known as a master of deciphering zone defenses.

Also, a big weapon Cook has is escapability, i.e., the ability to pull it down and take off. You think MSU is going to let him run against Iowa in the B1G Championship with a healing shoulder? Or will he spend more time in the pocket and/or throw it away earlier than usual?

Just sayin'... :)

Oregons DL coach, Ron Aiken, was the DL coach at Iowa for 8 years. Not too surprising that KF would give him a call. Not many people would think of Iowa & Oregon sharing secrets but it happens all the time. Coaches talk to other coaches all the time to improve everything football related. Hopefully Iowa gleaned some things from Oregon that will be helpful Saturday night.

*Edit: Drinkin Buddy, thanks for the post. I had forgetten about the connection between the Iowa and Oregon.

I live in Portland these days so I am in tune to Oregon football. They were really disorganized in the first half of this year, especially with a new QB who was having trouble fully grasping their playbook according to local sports radio. He's more comfortable now, and the team is playing at a higher level as a result. I think MSU caught them at the perfect time.

Oregon's first 5 games against P5 teams: 30.6 ppg
Oregon's last 5 games against P5 teams: 48.6 ppg

Ferentz said in an interview not too long ago that as he was analyzing every aspect of the Iowa program to find way to improve upon the performance of the past few years, that Oregon was one of several places he visited to pick their brains about certain things such as morning practices, unorthodox weekly routines (i.e. taking Thursdays off), etc. So this isn't terribly surprising.

Scott frost Oregon offensive coordinator.. also spent some time in Iowa.. Coached at UNI..may have picked his brain as well..

The second letter of both Pitt & Michigan is "l". There is an "O" in both Oregon & Iowa. I mean, I'm just saying.

Iowa and MSU have had some great games over the last 10 years. I don't know who will win Saturday, but I will be surprised if it is not an awesome game. MSU has better talent than we do right now, but not by that much. We need to play a clean game, a hard nosed game and an inspired game and we can win this.

The capitals of Iowa & Michigan are in the south central part of each state.

There are 4 letters in the first name of each head coach. Both names have only 1 vowel.

More importantly, Oregon & Iowa would both be worth 7 points in scrabble. 7 got 6 against Michigan State. So....yeah, it probably means something.

7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 doors. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.

Iowa has a secretary named Michigan. Michigan has a secretary named Iowa.

I woukd like to think that Nebraska would provide some help as well as .....crap I went blank. There is another team on the MSU that has an Iowa connection but I can't remember at the moment.

Not sure who that team would be, but am certain that the Iowa coaches didn't want to convene a Town Hall meeting on the subject. Gotta keep it simple, stupid...don't want things caught up in committee.

The purpose of picking a coaching staff's brain is simply this: help you set up your theory.

By theory, I mean your approach and game plan. Things you would not have thought about had you not had the experience - on field - that they had. The tape is the tape, and there are 12 examples of that for each. But, as in life and business, you go to those you trust and ask the right questions to help develop you plan.

The value of Narduzzi to MSU and Oregon to Iowa is that they can provide insight - but beyond that, the impact and import lies within the collective 'intelligence and trust' within the coaching staff to take that knowledge and incorporate the critical components into their planning.

Net-net: Who do you trust, and how good are you at blending information into your plan for an edge?

It's not enough that both reached out and chatted - it's about who gained a tactical advantage from said meeting(s)?

Yep and with them having played each of the last 2 seasons AND that they were opening games, means Oregon has a ton of footage and information as they spent 2 full summers of preparation.

That may be even better than Narduzzi helping MSU.

Agree. And, may I add, the far greater value has been the on-field experience the Oregon staff had playing MSU vs. the film.

Everyone has film.

Be certain of the following - coaches are crazy about details and the good ones have memories like elephants. Those dudes can tell you what the film can't...tenfold.

Iowa doesn't go to Oregon unless Kirk thinks their good.

Peace, bro.

Herbie is usually pretty pro iowa. Not sure what is up his ass this year.

Guessing the mother ship has spoken. Plus, he is probably doing one of the quarter final games. Maybe he is "big timing" iowa. Wants to call a "name" program for his ego.
