I was probably as critical as anyone with respect to Mulvey his first few years with the program. He seemed perpetually lost and lacked the skills/physicality to play down low.

This year he's performed really well in limited minutes. He might be the best rebounder on a team that regularly gets crushed on the boards. I understand why he's not playing with Freeman because Fran wants offensive spacing for him down low. For the life of me I can't understand why he isn't the first guy off the bench backing up him up though.

Someone explain to me why he can't see the floor.

I was gonna post a No Can Do gif, but decided to go with this as it seems to be an accidental homage to an all-time great Hawkeye.

But hell no! Why Dembele starts and Mulvey sees few/no minutes is perplexing.

I agree. Brauns works hard and does some good things in his limited opportunities, but I thought Mulvey has earned some playing time, especially in the second half last night given the matchups with Northwestern. The NW big guy was abusing Payton Sandfort. Why not get Mulvey in there for five minutes or so and let him handle the guy. I'm confident he'd have done better than Sandfort, and Mulvey does hit the boards. He should be playing more, depending on matchups. He definitely should have been given a chance last night.

I don't think Fran would ever consider putting Mulvey in with Freeman because of the spacing, but there is no reason not to use him when Freeman is on the bench. Hell, last night I would have been tempted to replace Freeman with Mulvey for a few minutes in the second half just to give Freeman a blow and give Iowa an inside presence defensively and on the boards. Freeman wanted no part of it after he got his second foul early in the half.

PS & RM play completely different positions. jNW would have taken Mulvey outside and either shoot 3's or drive right by him. The problem was Fran not bringing double teams when players are just backing down our wings into the paint. Need better defensive awareness and rotations to cover this.

Mulvey would not have matched up well against jNW wings.

He might not have matched up with NW wings, but he would not have been worse then the 2 worthless players Fran puts on the floor in Dembele and Brauns who gathered in a whopping 1 rebound in 20 minutes of playing time.
I admit that I completely whiffed on my expectations on Dembele, the experiment of starting Dembele has got to stop and playing Brauns instead of Mulvey is crazy, Brauns could be the most worthless player Fran has ever picked up from the portal. He's a very poor man's Rebraca and I apologize insulting Fillip. Even is devoid of any game away from the basket and can't rebound a lick, but other then that, Fran thinks he is worthy of playing time.
Future games will be lost needlessly if Fran continues to start Dembele and play Brauns instead of Mulvey, and that is not hyperbole. Getting outrebounded by Northwestern is very concerning heading into Ann Arbor on Saturday.

Yes but hows his 3 pt shot?

Fran defense? Not even in the same sentence should Frans name be mentioned.

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Notice how nobody made a big deal about Stratton playing over Sullivan vs Nebraska? Nobody asking why not at least the Sullivan goalline package. None of it.

Fans were 100% satiated to have the bottom string guy in there. There was no further backup to call for

Nor did PS. They needed to change that up somehow, someway

There is a very simple answer to this question that makes no claims of clueless coaches

Mulvey is not a quality B1G player. But he is what they've got available. And in occasional spot situations it makes sense to put him in and directing him to play D, protect the rim, and get boards.
Because Fran seems to have no interest or concern in those things it is not surprising that he would see no value in a player who can't shoot. Reggie Evans would have never played for Fran.

I agree with you, but after 14 years of Fran, not like he'll change anything. Personally I'd prefer the product TJ Otzelberger has been putting out over Fran's product, but I was born a Hawkeye.

Not directly, but they were driving on Sandfort he might have been a deterrent as a shot blocker.

Really, you want a 7 footer shooting 3 pointers instead of rebounding. Are you on the Iowa coaching staff?
Luka is 6ft10in. almost 7 ft.

How many 7ft'ers in the NBA that shoot the 3?
Here's a few, even MVP's.... This isn't the 1960's

Embid
Joker
Giannis
Wembenayna
Durant

If they have the skill, let it fly. That's the Fran way.

Sullivan was not close to 100% healthy.

Riley's got 5 fouls to give...let him bang around in there a little bit. Let him earn a some of that scholarship money.

I agree too. Mulvey seems like he could help as the backup center.

I like Riley. He's said himself that he hasn't been as committed as he needed to be at points in his career. But you can't teach 7 ft, so I wouldn't mind seeing him get a few minutes here and there.

But this thread is beyond hilarious. Again, there is actually a saying that, "fans favorite player is the backup QB."

We'll come back to this thread in a couple months

FRAN.

Same reason he got little PT when the 5’s were gassed and needed a breather, but 44 was relegated to dusting the chairs with his backside.
