Deaths of Omaha cousins, both 27, leave families in shock!

Martha Lillard stood on the corner of 28th Avenue and Spencer Street, sobbing.

Just minutes before, she had learned that her grandson Lafayette Antonio Reed had been killed early Tuesday, along with his second cousin, Diondre Mitchell. The Omaha men were both 27.

“He was a good boy, he was turning his life around” Lillard, 64, said of Reed, who went by Tony. “Very positive.”

Standing outside his home as people entered to offer their condolences, Alvin Mitchell said he was shocked to learn that his grandson Diondre had been shot and killed.

On Monday night, Reed and some cousins left the home of his mother, Keshia Reed, planning to head to a strip club, Keshia said.

She said she didn’t know why they were in the area of the shooting.

“I’m trying to understand. They don’t ever go down there,” she said. “I believe they were lured down in that area.”

Reed worked in temporary construction jobs and had two daughters, ages 7 and 5, Keshia Reed said.

“He was just trying to go to work to make a living,” she said. “This is hard to believe, because he wasn’t in the streets anymore.”

Reed is a cousin of Etienne Burns, who was shot and killed in September 2011 when he was 14.

In February 2011, a police officer found Reed with a stolen Ruger rifle and a 30-round magazine in the back seat of a sport utility vehicle, according to a police report. He pleaded guilty to second-offense carrying a concealed weapon. During his three-year probation, a judge added a provision that prohibited Reed from being in contact with gang members whether or not they are his relatives.

Mitchell was a father of four boys by different woman and worked at Hairoglyfix Hair & Body Expo for about a year, said his boss, salon owner Robert Brown.

“This is pretty bad,” Brown said. “He was a really good guy. ... Dion will be greatly missed.”
