Tough way for Oregon to lose by 1

Here is video of the end of the game, where Oregon twice failed to box out after a missed UNC free throw in the final 5.8 seconds of the game: The first time, Oregon had to foul UNC again! The second time? UNC ran out the clock.

North Carolina wins 77-76

I'm betting the Northwest unites and the Zags definitely get many of Oregon's fans to stick around to cheer for them to beat Carolina. Bad enough that there's also a "Carolina" also in the women's final four. At least Gonzaga took care of their men's team today. I suppose some of the other Carolina team might also stay to cheer for their northern neighboring Carolina? Will be interesting to see the attendance figures Monday.

Not sure what Bell was doing on the last two offensive rebs. He didn't box out PINSON and the first go around and then he barely stepped in front of Meeks in the 2nd misses. Bell played a very good game but boy did he shit the bed on the final 6 seconds.

Good point. ESPN and Bell agree with you:

Oregon's Jordan Bell took the blame for the Ducks' 77-76 loss to North Carolina in the national semifinals Saturday night, saying his inability to box out the Tar Heels in the waning seconds cost his team a chance at a championship.

"If I had just boxed out ... I had two opportunities,'' Bell said. "People can tell me whatever they want, but I lost the game for us.''

The final two plays:

With 5.8 seconds left and in the bonus, UNC senior Kennedy Meeks missed two free throws, with the second clanking off the front of the rim. Bell reached up and got his hand on the back of the ball, but the Tar Heels' Theo Pinson outjumped him, tapping the ball back out and giving UNC another possession.

Forced to foul again, Oregon wrapped up Joel Berry II and sent him to the line with four seconds remaining. The junior, an 81 percent free throw shooter, also missed both. Bell appeared to corral the second off the backboard, but Meeks wrestled it away from him, allowing the Tar Heels to drain the clock and advance to the national title game against Gonzaga.

It is hard to believe that a player at this level could "forget" to box out on a free throw...TWICE! Equally hard to believe that UNC missed four free throws down the stretch and got away with it. My bracket has Gonzaga playing UNC in the final and Gonzaga winning. Should be a good game on Monday night. Go Zags!

When I saw TV Ted was one of the refs, I knew there was going to be a lot of half assed calls and was wondering who he wanted to win the game, because the other team was going to get screwed.

Bell perhaps was thinking of being the hero and getting the board rather than actually doing the fundamentals first. Sloppy but highly entertaining game.

If I were Fran, I'd use that video to hammer home the importance of blocking out. An important fundamental that Oregon did poorly.

I thought Meeks got away with a clear shove in the back on the final miss, but we all know that officials "aren't supposed to decide the game" by enforcing the rules in last 30 sec or so of a game. NC definitely gagged the FTs, but were lucky enough to still win.

Ditto. I was just going to post this.

Hell no. Lazy effort by Bell. You can't call a push on that with Bell making zero effort to boxout.

I had the over at 153 so my parlay was VOID. If he just hits 1 of those free throws I win my parlay 3k to win 7900

yes Fran could. He could also show about 100 of the same clips from his own team and lack of the block out.

Having lived in North Carolina the natives of North Carolina consider North Carolina as the only Carolina. The natives always, that I knew, considered South Carolina in the same way many Iowa fans consider ISU as the little brother. I do not believe South Carolina fans will be rooting for The Tar Holes simply because they are neighbor states. NC (ACC) SC (SEC)

I agree that Bell thought the game was over and wasn't giving his best effort, but it was a very clear shove in the back by Meeks. My real point is that the game should be called the same the entire game, not 39 min and 30 sec.

UNC's lead seemed stuck on 7 forever; then all of the sudden the lead was just one point.

Did you watch the video? He did about as bad a job TWICE at boxing out as you can get!

Go Zags is right!

imagine if a foul got called; Doesn't Oregon shoot 2 FTs (or 1-1?)?

I am looking forward to the battle between Karnowski and Meeks- this should be a heavy weight battle (literally). I believe that the Tar Holes have the size and length to handle the Zags.

I think it's the other way around
That's why I think Gonzaga wins cuz they can handle Carolina's size and length

We shall know the answer tomorrow, but I think Carolina gets the W they are playing in consecutive Championship games.

It is hard to believe but pressure situations do weird things to people. Chris Webber comes to mind.

unfortunately, games like this will stick with the players and fans for a long time.

look at Iowa fans; we wonder all the time "what If Ronnie Lester had not hurt his leg in the Final 4 game vs Louisville?" And that game was 37years ago!

You had to be the guy that pointed out 37 years?

hard to believe sometimes, huh? heck, the 1987 team (Tom Davis' first year at Iowa) does not seem that long ago, but that is 30 years ago. and blowing an 18 point 2nd half lead to UNLV, where if we win that game, we return to the Final 4?

where does the time go?

That was another possible National Championship team, if my memory serves me correctly Dr. Tom kind of played not to lose the last 10 minutes of that game.

Exactly my point. Ole Roy and the heel fans would be ready string up the official, who actually made a call that according to the rules could have been made. That is why most coaches would not have there players line up along the lane when they have the lead and are shooting a FT in the last few secs.

I went back and looked at the play. Meeks had his left hand in the middle of Bell's back and then bulldozed him all of the way under the basket, if not to the other side of the basket. Bell didn't put up much resistance, but he didn't walk under the basket on his own. It is debatable whether a foul should have been called, but clearly it could have been. With only 4 sec on the clock and the time it would have taken to just get the rebound, a foul call is about the only way that Oregon could have won the game.
