Moscow authorities say a nanny was tackled and arrested as she was walking around a subway station carrying the decapitated head of a 4-year-old child.
“She was wearing black clothing,” an unidentified eyewitness told TASS news agency. “In one hand she had a head, the other an object.”
Video of the incident quickly circulated on YouTube and she could be seen carrying the head by its hair. The woman’s name has not been released but TASS reported that she was born in 1977.
It also reported that the child’s body was found in an apartment that had been set on fire.
In a statement, the commissioner of Russia’s federal child welfare agency said there were signs that the child suffered a violent death while calling the incident “monstrous and inexplicable.”
“I urge parents to be vigilant-hiring a babysitter for their children, require a complete package of documents: medical examination, certificate of mental condition,” Pavel Astakhov said. “After all, we are talking about the health and safety of your child.”
The woman is undergoing a mental evaluation.
