Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

You haven’t really experienced Independence Day until you have walked past a room full of nursing home residents belly laughing at the TV broadcast of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Highlight of my day so far.

I was curious.... so I looked back at historical results.

In the 90s they would give 12 minutes and the winner would be in the 20’s. How many “sports” have seen that level of improvement? Crazy

Joey Chestnut is lifting the Mustard Belt once again. The 35-year-old competitive eater ate 71 hot dogs in 10 minutes on Thursday to claim his 12th title in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest.

Chestnut beat 17 other competitors and easily held off Darron Breeden (second with 50 hot dogs) and Geoffrey Esper (third with 47 hot dogs).

Last year Chestnut set a record by eating 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes. He ate 72 in 2017 and 70 in 2016. He's now won four in a row, with his only loss in the last decade against Matt Stonie in 2015's contest.

Who is the CE known as “the black widow”? She weighs about 110 lbs?

Yup! I used to watch this with my son until he left for college. Joey is the king!

I wonder what that is in weight?
If it's the standard size Nathan's beef frank (I assume that it is) the weight of 74 franks alone is just a little over 8 pounds, then add in 74 buns at ~1.5 ounces each, that's another 7 pounds. So roughly 15 pounds of dry weight, with no addition for condiments or water to help them slide down the gullet.

I never watch competitive eating though, it's disgusting to me.

A close friend of mine is competing in it again this year.

I've met most of the competitors at events I've helped with and they're an interesting group of people.

Surely Chestnut is retired, right? How can he keep topping his insane run?

There are also odds for who will eat the most hot dogs not including Chestnut.

They look like this:

  • Geoffrey Esper: -250
  • Nick Wehry: +275
  • Other: +800
  • James Webb: +1200
  • Gideon Oji: +1200
If you want to bet on Chestnut, but don’t want to lay -5000, his over/under is currently set at 74.5 hot dogs, with a -145 vig to the over and +115 under.

When it comes to the women’s side of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, Miki Sudo is a huge -3000 favorite, with the field available at +1200.

Sudo’s over/under is set at 44.5 (-110o/-120u).

And want to bet on both Chestnut AND Sudo? Their combined over/under is 119.5 (+110o/-140u).
