National Championships Dual Series

The B1G vs the rest would be a great way to start out a season like they do in that other sport.

Like a Dual or for the All Star meet? Good Idea though!

Ill take it one step farther, the rest includes all divisions. Meaning Andrew Long or a D3 stud is included. And here is one for giggles, make Michigan State wrestle Grand View or Northwestern vs Wartburg. Mix it up some. Give the #1 team in all divisons the lesser big ten teams.

In Iowa City. I will buy a ticket please. Coach of BIG champions gets to pick his team. Highest returning team outside BIG picks the other team.

Totally agree. It's actually more like the Big10 / ACC Challenge in basketball than a bowl system. I don't mind the Big10 vs the world part, but would like to see them break this process in cases where the top two teams have not wrestled and match them up. Maybe it won't come in to affect all that often, but with Big10 scheduling being as terrible as it is, this might come in to play on a regular basis.

If they want to make it a big deal, move up nationals, and take the top 8 teams after nationals and do a 2 day Dual Tourney.

Yep. This whole National Duals thing gets more ridiculous every year, since they ruined a perfectly outstanding event. That was a fantastic weekend of action, where fans could watch the best of DI, DII, DIII, and women's college wrestling. There was almost always a great match going on, and the excitement built throughout the weekend until the finals Sunday afternoon. It was a great celebration of the sport, and the fans loved it.

Now, it's an absolute joke, IMO. I have nothing against more dual meets, and I'm sure there will be some good ones, but this is more like a 1-meet extension of the regular season, adding a non-conference meet to the schedule. It's not remotely close to what the National Duals used to be.

Last season they did mail them out with season tickets and then later in the season when they added the Saturday session? I don't think they are part of season tickets this year though. Maybe I am mistaken about that.
Last season, they mailed tickets directly to season ticket holders.

You are correct. There was one National Dual ticket in the season tickets last year.......and then they sent out the tickets for the 2nd day.

Nope, nope, nope. Just stop right now. We can argue Brands vs Cael all day but we got to draw the line right here. You do not put PSU in the Rose bowl and Iowa in the Orange bowl. Those are fighting words!

Other way around my friend!
Well as bad as Penn State's Football team is, they couldn't have played worse than Iowa did in the Rose Bowl...................

So since PSU won tonight, that means they get to go and duel the non BIG team for the duel title, right?
Which I don't understand since Iowa went undefeated too and are Co Big Ten Champs....Huh?

Sandor - it's because they are based on the NWCA coaches' rankings.

i don't agree with the process (or the format), but that's how it's determined.

Sandor, how did that dual between you guys and Ohio State go? How about you guys and Michigan?

I don't like it, and personally, I would have liked you guys to be treated as the non-B1G team for this purpose, allowing you to wrestle at Rec Hall for the National Duals title. Alas, I got outvoted, which shouldn't have been a surprise given that I got 0.000% of the vote.

That is asinine. You know damn well that Iowa had no say in not facing tOSU and Michigan.

Um, nobody wanted to wrestler them more than Iowa, trust me. Not our fault we got a crappy duel schedule this year.
Yes, I agree we should have a Legends vs the Leaders final duel to determine who competes for the national duel title.

John, you guys could very well have scheduled a non-conference dual with any of those teams.

That said, the fact that your B1G schedule was inferior to Penn State's was only half of my point. The other half was that you guys can, and probably should, point the fingers squarely at the commissioner of the Big Ten Conference (or whichever underling below him that set the conference schedule, I'm not sure who that is, and frankly, whoever it is, there isn't any contact information available online for anybody that works for the league) for not either having a two-tiered scheduling structure (where it can be ensured that the best teams all wrestle each other, although I suspect coaches on both sides of that dividing line would reject that idea out of hand) or a division structure with a conference championship dual.

I don't care about the whole dual thing, there will be an asterisk next to it. Same with the years PSU won titles but didn't show up for it for the dual tourney. I am more pissed about the individual matchups we missed out on by not wrestling tOSU or PSU. But yea, PSU deserves the ranking.

No, we should point the finger at the "money whores" who have made the Big Ten Conference a 14 team Conference. Take out those extra 4 teams and your best teams have a lot higher percentage of facing each other every year.

So, I have hearing conflicting information. I heard that the dual is going to be on Sunday, Feb 21st........but on the end of the radio call on Friday night, Grace/Ironside talked about the National Duals on Feb 22nd. We have any idea which one it correct?

Sloehawk,

If you got your wish PSU wouldn't be in the b1g. They were the first addition in 1990. Nebraska was 20 years later, and then Maryland and Rutgers 1.5 years ago.

This is easier said then done-- Its safe to say that Iowa went to great lengths to try and set up a dual with some top teams, and the reason it didn't happen wasn't because both sides were not willing-- there are LOTS of factors-- finals, available dates, university rules etc. The big ten schedule makers are at fault--and this will continue to happen-- until something is done.

Tom Brands indicated last Friday at the Johnson County I-Club annual wrestling luncheon that the dual match in Iowa City is most likely to be scheduled on Monday, February 22nd and that a ticket is not included as part of your season tickets. Whenever the tickets go on sale you will need to purchase them and he strongly encouraged everyone to purchase tickets and support the Hawkeyes no matter who they draw!

I'm assuming that the dual at Penn State will be on Sunday, February 21st and perhaps the BTN is attempting to broadcast both of these duals??? I'm not sure why else Iowa would schedule this meet on a Monday unless Carver Hawkeye Arena is already booked up with several other events! The whole idea/format this year seems to be a total mess, but hopefully in the end it will be just fine! I'm trying to be positive as I'm like most and thinking what was wrong with getting 8 or 16 teams together for a weekend of duals and fight it out???

I was told by a credible person that we will NOT wrestle Okie State again, that our coaching staff has a say in who we will wrestle in this thing,
and that they do not want a re-match with Okie State, and Iowa wants to see a new team, with that being said, I'd expect Mizzou.

A Monday night? Terrific. That will boost ticket sales, for sure. Maybe they could hold the meet at noon, which would help even more.

If either VTech or Missouri beat NC State(I think at least one of them do), you won't have to worry about wrestling OkState again regardless of if Brands has any say so.....

The NWCA lists it as a Sunday event. Penn State, Oklahoma State, NC State, Ohio State, Michigan, Lehigh, and Missouri all list it on their schedules as a Sunday event. Weird.

I looked at the basketball schedules and it shows the women's basketball team is home against Indiana on Sunday Feb. 21, game time is 2:00 pm. I'm assuming that's why they can't wrestle that day.

I'd take a Sunday at 6:00 or something like that. At least folks could travel to the meet on Sunday and get home for the work week. A Monday time will all but eliminate fans from outside of eastern Iowa.

I remember reading they reserve the right to change the date and times to maximize coverage and availability. Iowa moving to Monday makes sense looking at that.

And that would bother me because??????????????????????

Oklahoma State isn't in the Big Ten either, and we seem to wrestle them an awful lot..................................

Email from Iowa Athletic Ticket Office this morning about ordering tickets indicates the meet will be at Carver at 7:00pm on Monday Feb 22nd. Opponent to be announced by Feb 14th.

Who in their right mind would use one of Carl Sanderson's ideas? The guy has always been about himself instead of what's best for the sport. No wonder it is such a bad joke.

And that is why Brands is willing to schedule Okie St. Smith and Brands both have the big picture of wrestling in mind and want to promote that. Grapple on the Gridiron is classic case of promotion (granted it didn't hurt Brands feelings for one second that he told PSU where to put their attendance record too) Cael is about one team only.
