National Duals Cancelled

So, will we have a hole in the end of our schedule that we will fill with a non-conference opponent?.
No. This event was exempt from competition points, so in fact it was an extra. Probably will just shift dates of others, or not.

My theory is that doing things at a national scale would be too hard. Picking a top 8 is arbitrary. It's like the basketball or football playoff, somebody is going to be mad because they were the first team left out and have good reasons why they should be in. But then you undervalue dual meets.

I'd like to see the big ten have a dual tourney at the end of the regular season for the top 8 during the regular season. It's easier to have tie breakers for an in conference tourney than a national tourney because the teams actually wrestle each other during the season. Wrestle everything out to true places and give the team their "placement points" in the individual tourney.

This values dual meets because a good dual team essentially gets "an additional wrestler" because of the points the team gained for their overall placement in the dual tourney. This could be the difference in winning a big ten title if you were within striking distance during the individual tourney and gain these points from here by finishing higher than your competitors team.

Granted it's not a national title, but winning a big ten title is still something to be proud of. JMO

Your mom said its time to come up from the basement.
WOW! Original thought you have. What else do you have in your bag of tools?
EDIT: Do tools even have tool bags? Guess that would be their offspring? Guessing this one is third generation of tools. :)

The Lone Star Duals in Grapevine Texas use to be a great event. Boys and Girls from TX, OK, and LA coming for a 2 day team dual tourney. They also had 6-8 college teams do a 1 day dual set. But, sadly D1 teams stopped coming. Was a sweet event for a $10 ticket.

I hate anything that leads to less quality competition throughout the season. This is the exact same mentality that has coaches sitting kids during duals to protect seeds or avoid the risk of injury and it's detracting from the sport. I want to see great matches all season, not just in March.

I like the idea of having a national dual tournament after nationals. They could call it post season duals. It wouldn't have to be a sanctioned national duals by the ncaa. My thoughts; have it a week or 2 after nationals, have it in a warm weather location(Florida, Texas, So Cal, Hawaii), give a 2 or 3 lb allowance, and you invite the top eight teams from nationals. If a team(s) don't want to go then go on down the placing 9th, 10th, ect... This would be a reward to the wrestlers and fans. It would be good exposure to the southern states and wrestling. It would be F**. That's something i would make a family vacation every year.

Cost plays a huge factor as many have just spent $$$$ for Nationals plus the cost to the schools. For most schools wrestling does not make money.

The problem with this is the April freestyle schedule.

The April FS schedule is not the only problem with a National dual tournament after NCAAs that inspite was talking about.

First, the NCAA is the end of the season. There aren't many teams out there who are going to want to roll out a week after the meatgrinder of the NCAA tourney to wrestle a meaningless event. So teams in the top 8 decline, invite the next team in line...until we have #19 vs #23. No thanks. Also, warm-weather locale? Fahgetaboutit. Nobody shows up in Vegas for WTT, ain't nobody showing up in Florida or SoCal for an event like this...especially any wrestling fans who just spent their wad on NCAAs.

National Duals had a great event in Cedar Falls but for some reason they went away from it and tried to make it "matter". It went from a great event, to a mediocre event to a joke where they just randomly pick teams to wrestle Big10 teams.

Not sure what that towel tossing chair chucker messed up in that dual.
Cael could have told the ref that "fleeing the mat" was no longer a rule and had been removed from the rulebook. Instead he let Beitz get penalized a phantom point with 26 seconds left in the match to tie the score. Beitz eventually lost in ot and PSU lost the meet 17-18.

Keep reminiscing Jammenz. When those memories fade, what will you have...

...other than some leftover t-shirts.

Seems like it's about 50/50 on who likes the National Duals and who doesn't. The one nice thing about it was getting to Crown a Duals Champion. Now it kind of brings us back to the age old question, which is "Do Duals matter?" The National Championship will be determined by the NCAA National Tournament, so other than using Duals as a way to "Hone" your skills and give you a "Warm-up" before the tournament, does it take College Wrestling a step back?
Why would it be a step back?
It was a nice tournament that generally speaking was regularly poorly attended.

The goofy effort to make it into something it never was, "a must!", is what brought about this tournament's demise. The sport itself continues to move forward.

Really! From the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier "The UNI-Dome had played host to the national event for six consecutive years, usually drawing crowds upwards of 16,000 people." But, "When the Hawkeyes didn't come to the event last year, attendance plummeted. UNI lost money on the event, and the organizers had already begun looking at a different course of action."

What you are saying here is that the national duals didn't move the needle, Iowa did. Not a hearty endorsement if you ask me.

And how was it attended in Minnesota when the Hawks did come. Lots of Hawk fans IIRC but not a lot of hometown people.

That's not true -- lots of hometown people dressed up as empty seats.

Right! Not the gimmick where Iowa relies on a football game to grow the numbers. Grapple on on the gridiron < 10k without football.

Maaaan, you're not very bright. One of those kids your folks wished they'd blown in the sheets, aren't ya?

Sure thing Brittany-Hawk. Tell me, with out the Iowa football team (which lost to North Dakota State) how many people would have showed up?

Probably about 70,000 people. A lot of folks didn't show up because we were playing such a cream puff in football that night.

Attendance for our last 3 regular home duals with OK State were all over 10K. One of them was over 15K. So...no.

And yes, having a football game on the same day increased attendance. Welcome to the whole point of the event, Captain Obvious.

Iowa leads the nation in attendance every year. We ran a gimmick because, well, we could. Better than anyone else could have ever done.

So, a football team that lost to North Dakota State University increased the Hawks wrestling attendance by 30k?

Actually, I do believe we beat Minnesota that day.

Iowa got a lot of people to show up at Grapple because Iowans support wrestling with their time and money instead of whining about opportunities and when do come around...don't support them.

We did our part...you guys didn't.

We had 2 events that day in Kinnick, and won both of them. Good day if you can get it...............

Our group was there. Hawks wrestled like dog doo-doo. One of the worst showings I've ever witnessed live. Thankfully there hasn't been too many of those over the years.......

No. Different season, so different team. But even at that, Iowa draws well for football even in down seasons, and the grapple was a one-of-kind event so the turnout would still have been good.

This might be the worst troll in history. Taking shots at Iowa fans for attendance when they have lead the country in attendance for at least 11 seasons, if not longer? Why is this fun?

Congrats to Iowa for breaking the attendance record! Iowa football that is!
Smash a stand alone event, not piggy backing on football. I'm saying this for wrestling!! Let's go big boys, lets see what you got!!! This is for any WRESTLING team listening.
