NATO headgear pull

Other ref was like

I wish this wouldn't have happened, when I saw it live I was thinking crap nato is going to be down 2 and be forced to get at least two takedowns to win this. It is really inexcusable that it wasn't called. It officiating 101 to trust what you see and be confident in your call know matter what the reaction. It was made even worse by him stopping the action all together to just ask a question. I wanted a good clean win by nato on this because Clark was already at the disadvantage with the shoulder. Hope we see round 2 in St. Louis and a better officiated match all around.

I agree with everything above. To give the ref the teeniest out: he likely assumed Tomasello pulled the headgear (what other rational explanation for Clark's headgear flying off?), but he either didn't see it directly or didn't see it clearly. Probably worthy of an official review, in retrospect.

It all happens so fast. The ref wasn't certain and sought opinion from the other ref. I agree with the no call because they were unsure; however, the Coach Brands should have waved his flag.

It's should be reviewable I just don't know if it is under the rules. Flip the script on this and say nato doesn't pull the headgear and the ref stopped the action like that to ask a question. I am not saying nato finishes there but he had a great chance. You better believe I would be just as salty as a lot of Iowa fans are about this if that happened.

What the hell man! Come in here acting all nice and being honest. Is this some sort of reverse tOSU Jedi Mind Trick?

Seriously though...them's the breaks. Yea, it should have been called but then Cory will be the first to acknowledge that he should have held on for one more second. I am really looking forward to the rematch but am concerned about Micic in the quarters.

No tricks I just understand the amount of time and effort these kids put into this craft and I don't want to see wins decided by officiating. Injuries I can accept but bad calls I can't. I hate to use a football reference but Ohio states 2002 national title doesn't feel as good as the 2015 title because all the argueing you have to do to defend that win.

If that can't be reviewed & called correctly, then ditch the process. MLB has it about right but it delays games too much. I think if you are going to disrupt a sport that relies heavily on conditioning, only to get calls wrong or F them up all together...ditch it .

It sucks that Cory's match went that way but he is right there with the #1 guy, bum shoulder & all. I would rather him get the shit calls ats B1G's than NCAA's. Lightning won't strike twice.

Yea I know, haha. I was more commenting that we are not used to opposing fans coming in and calling it like it is...If it makes it any better, I don't think it was on purpose because Nato had the high ground in a scramble...why yank the headgear off? Like I said though in another thread, refs aren't there to judge intent.

It can be reviewed, I'm sure. It is equivalent to locking hands. It has the same signal. I don't like the referee deciding the match either; however, the ref not properly calling it is the referee deciding the match. It works 2 ways. Once again, Brands should have challenged.

Do you mean thrown the flag? lol

Clear headgear pull but kindof strange to me. If you're Tomasello, how would that help you advance the position?

In a fair amount of cases it really doesn't as it can simply be unintentional (no matter how a screen shot looks) as it can be the same with locked hands as it can inadvertently happen but a it's still a tech violation

Just watched the chinstrap pull again on BTN. Look like Tomasello was intentionally pulling it for some reason. During the mini break for blood time, Tom was talking to the refs when they were discussing the headgear pull. Clark was right there with them - who knew his headgear was pulled. They must not have let him review it to get the penalty. Very curious. If they would have allowed it, Tom obviously would have done it.

Also noticed when they were counting on Clark when he had Tomasello's ankle, Clark let go at four and got him around the chest again, but they gave him the stall call anyway.

I'm pretty sure EVERYTHIHG happens fast in a wrestling match. Also, sure that he saw it because otherwise why did he ask the other official.....if he wasn't 100% sure just take a look. The idea is to get it right. He had no qualms in calling the cut back. Whether it was or not, never seen it called in over 40 years.

All I know is I like me some Cory Clark. Kid is all class and has the heart of a champion to go with it. Really really hope he gets to stand at the top of the podium in a short two weeks.

As a ref, sometimes you think you saw something and are not certain. What you think you see can be deceiving when it happens so fast in a toss and tumble position. Possibly his positioning was not good and he only caught an obstructed angle of it. It is very tough. The second official should have caught it if the angle was bad for the head official as the assistant is opposite the head while working a match. Apparently Tom didn't see it either or he would have thrown the flag. The officials should have reviewed it to remove doubt. I'm not buying that Tomo would have scored a takedown if action not stopped. Cory had a leg. I think a stalemate was more likely.
