Mark Rutte, the Nato secretary general, has said “quite a number” of European countries are “willing to help out” with security guarantees for Ukraine, James Crisp writes.

The UK and France have said they would send troops to police the peace in Ukraine, if they were backed by a US security “backstop”.

Sir Keir Starmer said on Sunday that there would be a “coalition of the willing” of a group of countries before Mr Rutte suggested some nations said they would also be willing to contribute.

Mr Rutte said other countries said they would increase their defence spending during the summit in London.

He also dismissed fears that Mr Trump could pull the US out of NATO.

“Please, let’s stop gossiping about what the US might or might not do. They are in NATO. They are committed to NATO,” he told reporters.

Mr Trump has not committed to the security backstop to the European peacekeeping force.

I am reading about this euro summit in Ukraine and Russia. Looks like what Trump is wanting is Europe to be the ones policing whatever border they decide but UK and France want a “backstop” from the US. What do you think this “backstop” would be?

Also the UK PM Starmer is taking a strong lead on being the leader for the European Coalition. He seems to be agreeing with what Trump is saying on his end on how he views what the US should be doing and wants Ukraine to sign the minerals deal. I wonder if that would be consider the “backstop” guarantee for UK and France?

All very interesting to see this history to play out in real time.

I am against pulling out of NATO and do believe in NATO's mission.

However, I do believe that European countries have basically used NATO to offload their defensive responsibilities to the US in return for spending expansive, economically stagnant, increasingly culturally irrelevant welfare states. Western Europe is a disaster right now between economic crises, zero innovation, unmanaged immigration without assimilation.

It is time for Europe to take responsibility again for defense, especially on their continent. Some of the things that they're saying in Europe these days about needing to spend more on defense, being willing to take a more active role...music to my ears. I generally hate Trump's methods, I hate that Europe is only talking this way because the US is now seen as unreliable....but I definitely wish past US leaders had put much more emphasis on pushing Europe in this direction.

LOL the hits keep on coming from you. You really believe anybody tells Trump what to do? Laughable....
Well if the shoe fits. Trump has more or less given Putin exactly what he wants. Even going so far as blaming Ukraine for being invaded and calling Zelenskyy a dictator while refusing to call Putin a dictator. How do you explain that?

You really believe the Orange Turd isn't told what to do. Laughable. He's a fvcking coward pretending to be a cowboy. He'd shit his pants if he were in a room alone with anyone. His narcissism and egotism cover his frailty. Sorry MAGAs, your Orange blimp is a massive pussy.
