I used to spend a lot of time up in that area as a kid in the 80s/90s. Haven't been there in awhile, but I have some projects up there for the next several months. Strawberry Point, Elkader, Postville, Monona, Waukon, PDC and Platteville. And several rural areas. I'm looking forward to it. I love that area. Need some ideas where to go after work for dinner & beer. I love small town bars.

I didn't get a chance to go there last year, but this was my favorite place to eat (tenderloins) on the Iowa side.

Food is decent, but after three or four or however many fires, it doesn't really have the authenticity it used to.
Pretty much a tourist trap now, IMO.
I can echo the Breitbach's in Balltown rec. Never had a bad meal there.
My all time favorite place to eat in NE Iowa/SW Wisconsin was The Black Angus in Prairie du Chien. It was Jeffers' Black Angus back in the day but is known as Jones' Black Angus now. Unfortunately I have not been there in a few years, so unsure if it's still as glorious as it was during my time regularly eating there.
I'd ordinarily recommend Pete's Hamburger Stand in PDC too but they're closed until early May.
