Nebby: A case of end of game poor time management

Nebraska lost to Wisconsin because of 1) horrific pass defense and 2) the offenses inability to gain one first down. The offense goes stagnant for long stretches and could have won three games (BYU, Illinois, Wisconsin) if they could have simply run the ball and gain a single first down and run out the clock.

Here's why I said it was "end of game poor time management:"

Wisconsin had all 3 time outs left; again, there were just just 86 seconds left in the game. So how does Neb manage the last 86 seconds? And yes, the calls you play are part of that time management. Do they try to get ONE first down with their offense and burn up all 86 seconds or do they go ultraconservative in those last 86 seconds and give the ball back to WI's offense? The Neb coaches decided to trust their D and not their offense. Poor game management, in my opinion.

A football game is all about situations and time management. At the end of the game, Neb did a poor job with those last 86 seconds.
Incomplete pass stops the clock. Wisconsin saves a TO for the final drive.

Well!?! Once a Hawk... Welcome to the difficult job of " you be the coach" !.

Decisions decisions!! Chess game - sort of anyway. As a fan, you probably have noticed that many many football contests are decided in the last minute or two of the game. Case in point, wisky vs. nebbie, last Saturday.

When to use time outs? When to punt? When to fake a punt. ( recall Bielema at Iowa - wisky beat Iowa ). When to run the ball, where to run the ball, who runs the ball. Pass the ball. Who to pass to. On and on and on...

Coaches ( and big ten coaches have lots of experience ) MAKE decisions based on that experience along with current game situations. Each coach understands his team and their tendencies and capabilities.

Did Coach Riley do what he thought was correct calls the last two minutes? Yes. Would you or I make the use calls? You, obviously, in all your posts in this thread, say that you would not have run the ball three straight times, gaining only five yards. OK.

Coach Riley, knowing time was short and his team ahead in the game, ran it, as we all witnessed. You think - bad time- management. Hmm? You say throw the ball - go for it in the air. Hmm? When you attempt a pass, two out of three things can happen. A completion, an interception, or an incomplete pass.

Now, sir or madam. How do you think 90,000 nebbie fans would react to an interception at that field position? Or, an interception and run back for a wisky touchdown? Or, an incomplete pass for no gain and clock stopped? Hmm?

Coach Riley does not seem like a riverboat gambler to me. And, the game nebbie lost the previous week to Illini, included an incomplete pass, clock stopped, illini wins. All in the last minute. How did the nebbie faithful enjoy that ending? Hmm?

You, my fellow football fan, certainly have the right to speak your mind, share your coaching criticism, and discuss 'time management'./game- management. However, please remember this. In football, as in other sports, coaches are calling plays, making quick decisions and doing so ALL game long. Entire game!

Based on the evidence and previous week's loss at Illinois, Coach Riley did what he thought was best. Fans question lots of plays during the games. OK. We get it. It's part of the fun! Isn't it? Kinda like chess.. Ebb and flow.

Fans share their opinions all the time. We love American football. Lots of things to discuss during and after the game and even after the season. It certainly is ONLY a game, not war. Life goes on after Saturday football. Glad to read your opinions. Maybe you could coach d.1 football someday. You seem to be really into it. Till next Saturday.Ta ta

Not really. If Iowa goes through the season with only 1 loss and it happens to be against Nebraska, and Wisconsin goes the rest of the season with its only conference loss to Iowa that would mean Iowa wins the division.
I understand what you are saying. Maybe I am not being clear. I am coming from a position of looking through to the end of the season which team has the best chance of making a run and to me it is Wisconsin. With us and Nebraska in their rear view mirror the only game that would appear to be a major challenge is northwestern and that is in Madison. An extra game cushion against the Badgers would have been much better at this point than the extra game against Nebraska. Wisconsin is in the race. We control our destiny but unfortunately we don't control injuries and they are mounting up. If we can find a way to beat NU then I think we are in real good shape.

I agree. The Badgers have a very easy remaining schedule. The Huskers schedule on the other hand looks pretty tough, with good possibility of a couple more losses.....

I think this is one of the biggest assets Abdullah had. The guy could always get ya a first down by running HARD. You guys miss that.

The offense in the third quarter lost this game. Huskers were up 14-7 with the wind and the defense kept giving them great field position.

It should have been 24-7 going into the 4th, but the offense did absolutely nothing and the D was gassed in the 4th quarter.

Second straight week where a great effort through 3 quarters by the defense yields nothing b/c the offense is a dumpster fire...

So you are supportive of Nebraska playing to win at Illinois? Armstrongs bootleg was playing to win.
They already had the game won. All they had to do was run on 3rd down, let the play clock run down, take the 5 yd penalty, and punt. Illinois would have had to go at least 80 yds in about 15 seconds. That wasn't playing to win, that just plain dumb.

Nebby didn't have bad time management vs. Wisc. They had bad play calls and worse execution. I think they ran a fullback dive on 3rd and 7? That is where you use Armstrong's running threat and run an option or an off tackle stretch play or toss play. Something that might take 5-6 seconds rather than 1-2 seconds. A Fb dive into a 9 man box is going nowhere fast in that situation. Who knows if you can get the edge and make someone miss maybe you get more than 5 yards on 3 runs?
