Nebraska WR to enter portal

Malachi Coleman, a former 4-star prospect from Lincoln, plans to enter the portal and would have three years of eligibility remaining. The Hawks offered him out of high school. Perhaps he could be the "player to be named later" in exchange for Oliver Martin.
Maybe, but fortunately we have some good receivers coming back with Parker, Mota and Terrence Smith in the mix next year.

I'd recommend learning from the Indiana school of transfer-portal usage. Bank on guys who have proven production ... even if it may be in a lesser conference (or lower division). Skilled guys with a chip on their shoulder are more likely to produce than an entitled kid who is chasing a bag of money and who is searching for a path of least resistance to playing time.

Are we paying these proposed Portal signings in Swarm beer? We do free up whatever we were paying Cade, but we have
to retain our current guys that have Portal market value.

His name alone is too sexy for KF. We need to be looking in the portal for Steves, Erics, Scotts and Nicks

I would not be opposed to Brown coming back into the fold. Another year with Lester, and hopefully an actual QB
I'd be highly opposed to Brown coming back. There are plenty of G4 WR that have a chip on their shoulder looking to move up to the big leagues. Go find them instead.

They haven't spent time in the system, and likely don't have the athleticism Brown has. Also curious about all of these G4 WRs that are available that are elite athletes that Iowa can nab.

Well, they haven’t played yet, but all are good athletes. They have the same number Coleman has. Smith is still in high school.
Not looking to pile on, but I watched one of Smith’s game (not knowing it) and he blended in with everyone else on the field that day. Stats wise, he was third best WR on his own HS team for most of the year - he seemed to come on near seasons end though. So yeah, not exactly thrilled with this recruit knowing our track record at this position…. Hope he obviously proves me wrong though. 😉

I'm sorta beyond wanting an "elite athlete" at wide receiver. They've NEVER come to Iowa in my lifetime. Not under Hayden even when he had Bill Snyder as OC and a great passing game. And not under KF either. It's just not a place that has ever attracted athletic wide receivers....ever. Just give me a guy(s) that have good hands, that can run good routes, and are willing blockers. I'm good with that, honestly.

If ISM and Brandon Smith weren't elite athletes I don't know what to tell ya. Iowa has attracted elite athletes at WR, now utilization might be more of the problem.

Personally, I am done with P4 castoffs who couldn’t hack it at their current school. Give me a G4 guy who is killing it and is ready to move up. Those guys are your best bet in my opinion.
That depends on what "couldn't hack it" means in particular cases. We've seen a few success stories, where guys have had a bad experience for some reason, an unwelcome coaching change, or in the case of QB, being passed or even buried on the depth chart.

You're right, though, that it's mostly guys who already have had on-the-field success that are successful for their new teams.

I'm pretty sure you know what I meant. Sure, in the last 45 years of Hawkeye football under HF and KF , there are going to be examples here and there of athletic wide receivers at Iowa. My point still stands, though, that as a rule of thumb, Iowa does not attract those types of guys on a regular basis.

I don't know what you mean, Iowa has had elite athletes at the position that have been underutilized. To say things like Dwight was not an elite athlete demonstrates just that. Things have certainly gone wrong, but Iowa has had a stable of great athletes that were either head cases in Johnson/Bruce.
