Some interesting stuff on there. I like the oline. I like moving Boone into guard and having croston and boettger at tackles. Finally see the names of those in line to replace Cox and Plewa which is huge. Really really hope there is HUGE competition at the wife receiver spots between Smith, Schell, McCarron, and Falconer. I actually like the athleticism of the group. Woo knows Whst impact that will have on production. Nervous about the depth ay defensive end and think the situation with Ott is absolutely massive for this team for so many reasons, and just for depth purposes is the biggest one. Conversely, the depth in the secondary is maybe the best I've ever seen. Our back up corners would be starting at a lot of schools.
And lastly, those special teams names, that is a gigantic question mark going into the spring and fall.

Good to see Scheel and Ward in the 2 deeps. I expect one of the incoming freshman DEs to compete for playing time if Ott doesn't get his medical. I really like the back 7 of Niemann, Jewell, Mends, King, Taylor, Snyder, Mabin. I could see the incoming Taylor to push the 2 deeps at LB too.

Kickers are a big question mark.
If Ott doesn't come back, they need one of the DE to develop into an edge rusher. Wouldn't be surprised to see Reiff work his way into the two deep. Sucks that Daniels will be out during the spring. He needs the reps at center.

Daniels should light it up at center. Back to his natural position.
Hope for a LOT of improvement at O-tackle. That may be even more important to CJ's year than an upgrade at receiver.
On the defensive side getting a pass rush, linebackers not named Jewell, and replacing Lomax are areas of concern.

WLB - Aaron Mends, Jack Hockaday

I am defense oriented so, for me, this is the spot with the biggest intrigue. New blood. Mends made huge strides this year and Hockaday has a lot of promise. Both are young so there will be some growing pains but they will be surrounded by a lot of experience.

Looking at the dept chart it is crazy to think that on defense there are only 3 senior starters, Johnson King and Mabin. The defense is set up to be good for the next couple years. On offense there are only

Only surprises, to me, really are some names at back-up I had not seen adn was not familiar with: Dalton Ferguson at OT, Sam Brinks at DE, Brady Ross at FB and Jake gervase at SS. As far as starters, I was interested to see which OT would move inside to a Guard spot and initially it looks like Boone Myers. I suspect that will still get determined this spring and summer, though.

What is this about Daniels missing spring?

Who's wife are we receiving? :)

Very Glad to see that Jay Scheel is now in the 2 deeps. A very exciting playmaker that most
Hawkeye fans no nothing about..........going to be a GOod one.

On Defense, hopefully Ott gets the season he deserves. However, Matt Nelson and
Parker Hesse are going to be very, very good Hawkeye FB players.

Kind of nice to have Two Shut-down corners and a Safety retunring from a Salty defense.
And, I'm going tp predict right here and now that Brandon Snyder becomes a
better overall Free Safety than Lomax.

Scheel is really becoming an Internet legend. Hopefully we'll see it translate to the field. If Snyder becomes better than Lomax then maybe he can tackle McCaffrey in the Rose Bowl or playoffs next year.

Only if he has the right cleats.

I'm really curious about the punter where Recinos is the backup.

Lets hope he is not the next Nico Law.

The true freshman linemen will need a spring and summer to learn the Iowa system and playbook not to mention the footwork and technique in pass blocking. Did I also say another 7 months of Doyle and his crew. You will see one or two redshirt freshman on the two deeps by next August (Waechter, Newborg, or Paulson)

While they are at it can they teach the current OTs the footwork and technique for pass blocking?

i guess what's the point of wasting time and money on recruiting 3 and 4 star guys when a third of these 2 deeps are walk ons. Or at least started as a walk ons.

I guess there are two ways to look at this.

First: Dang our coaches are great at getting talented diamonds to walk on!

Second: Dang, our coaches are giving scholarships to kids who can't beat out walk-ons!

THIRD: Some scholarship kids come in thinking their entitled and have read how good they are and some walk-ons come in with a "chip" because they read that they aren't good enough to put on a Hawkeye jersey and should be playing at a MAC or Div. 2 school.

So that's how we ended up with under-sized McCarron as a starting WR instead of 6'3" prototypical NFL WR in Willies. Garsh I'm glad our coaches recognized the fundamental advantage of replacing a deep-threat that can stretch the field with a kid who won't scare any opposing D-coordinators.

McCarron WANTS to be here. Willies chose to go elsewhere. Don't overlook the "gottawanta" factor.

This is Spring with seniors gone and two-deeps primarily listing backups for recent season. Most of freshmen not listed yet but they will be after Spring practice. That is when the 2-deeps will really mean something.

Redshirt freshman who was still struggling with blocking, reading defenses, etc like most 2nd year players. Powell, Hillyer, T Smith, MVB were getting more snaps than him (non were walk ins). He whines and quits the team 4 weeks into the season. That was the culture of 2014-15. Scheel, Snyder, Daniels, Wadly, J Jackson, Fleming, Perry, Bower, and Mends didn't whine and quit. Thus the 12-0 B1G season. We'd love to have the TEAM first attitude and talented Willies on this team. He chose to leave! I can't paint a clearer picture for you starbrown, but I'd suggest you find another team if you don't like it. It's the Hawkeyes way and it ain't changing!

Dumb move with McCarron imo. Already have a slot WR with Vandeberg. Need 2 guys on the outside who can take the top off defenses when they run vertical routes. Smith is a good start. But, had rock hands the final 3 games.

Glad and surprised to see Outsey as the 2nd string TE. Saw him on the field in goal line situations but he must be picking up the TE position quickly. As much as I wish Willies was here, I don't want to relive that argument.

Agreed. Mccarron's been here for a while, what you see is what you get. I'm hoping Scheel can put on some weight, and have him as the 3rd reciever, but Iowa rarely puts 2 burners on the field at once. I still think Scheel will see some time this year. D looks solid, but like said, D end depth is a concern.

Just because Vandeberg is white doesn't make him a slot receiver. There were plenty of times this season where they used him to stretch the field. The kid is fast. McCarron and Hillyer were mostly the blocking package WRs this season. I think KF is sending a message to the younger guys that if you want to play, start blocking.

My darkhorse for the #3 spot is Emmanuel Ogwo. He's got good speed and he impressed CJB in summer camp. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it were Falconer given playing time and I would assume better blocker.

FS will be the most important position in spring and camp. I wonder if Gair gets a shot but it will be interesting to see if at the start of season next year if we still have 2 walk-on's in 2-deeps

Wow what a racist comment imo. That is not the reason I pegged him as slot guy. He has the best hands on the team and fast over the middle of field. If he was as fast as you claim vertically. Then how come he got no seperation deep against Stanford let alone any of our WR in that matter??

I agree on Ogwo, I would also add that I would bet money that Falconer passes McCarron. I think Smith, Falconer and Ogwo will all be getting time next year with Vandeberg. I am taking a wait and see on Scheel.

I would guess that someone like Ojemudia, or the true freshman Hooker comes in and takes that back up FS spot. Although I would bet that Gair right now would be the back up to both positions since he has played both.

McCarron might be one of the fastest guys on the team. But this is a pre spring depth chart so don't get all worked up over it. It will be different by the time the first game rolls around.

How did he score a 40 yard touchdown by going over top of the defense if he is a slow slot guy?

And it's not a racist comment. Grow up. White WRs are looked at differently. It's a fact. Ever listen to Jordy Nelson do an interview? DBs play him closer because he is white because they think he isn't going to be that fast. Then he runs right by them. Ever listen to the NFL Draft? White guys are hard working and coachable with high motors. Black guys are fast and athletic. Its not racism. It's called a stereotype.

I expected a little more change on the OL. There were several names I expected to see that didn't make the list. Interesting.

The injury to Daniels would explain why he didn't play much the last part of the season. Also might explain the performance of the oline in the rose bowl if Myers, Daniels and Boettger were all injured

You can take your white stereotypical attitude and shove it. As I said before it might bein Iowa's best interest to put him in the slot and let him work those deep crossing routes down the field or use his great hands as a reliable outlet on 3rd downs.

I would really like us to use him moe effectively in the slot. Great hands, great feet and can present some match up issues like New England has used their slot receivers for years. Great on 3rd and short yardage, great in crossing and occasionally split the seam down the middle just when the defense thinks they know what he will do.

I little creativity and it is easy for me to see a guy that can catch 5-10 balls a game.

Seriously, if we have to spend an entire off-season (again) talking about Willies I might blow my head off....the kid quit on his teammates, we did pretty damn good last year without him, and I would not be surprised if we never hear his name again (if we do good for him) long story short MOVE THE F ON!!!!!

Finally someone with common sense who can see the same things I do watching games.
