New Big Ten commissioner

Geez I didn't realize Fran was that bad. The way the media talks about his former days you'd think he was all-conference not some end of the bench guy that couldn't even shoot FT's. I was never a great HS basketball player but crap I never shot below 70% on my FT's. How can someone be that bad?

And still get 30mpg

Yeah, I guess almost 4 assists per game is worth 28 minutes per game of a really bad shooter on a conference champion and NCAA tourney team.

His senior year he averaged Maishe Dailey points and 1 more assist than Connor while playing Joe Wieskamp minutes and shot worse from the floor and line than almost every meaningful player we had last year. Daily shot .004 worse from the floor. Baer's .638 was our lowest FT% of anyone that mattered, which was .055 better than Fran's best.

I’m not one to find and bump old posts, but would be fun to re-read the thread where many were stating that Fran was a better basketball player than Alford was.

He played the 2nd most minutes on a team that won it's conference.

Back then it likely was worth it. Many coaches of the era wanted their PG to run the offense, the "classic" PG.

I'm not, by any means, going to say the guy was a great player. But he played 28mpg and had a 2:1 ast:to ration for a team that won it's conference and made a 48 team NCAA tourney. He wasn't a bad player.

Hey guys, Larry Bird only hit 37% from 3 and only took 2 per game for his career (he hit 21% his 3rd year), he was a sucky shooter.

We all (at least I hope we do) know that isn't a true statement. There is video evidence that Bird was a great shooter, plus we know that his rookie year he attempted more threes than six teams. Context matters, not just stats (and I say that as a stat guy).

When I started the discussion of his poor shooting, I did it as more of a joke. Fran obviously wasn't a great college BB player, but if he was the primary PG on a conference champion, he could play. It might demonstrate that he did what it took to win, and I also see a lot of that in CMac's play, which is why he often was on the floor at the end of games last year. I hope CMac has time to work on this outside shooting, while playing baseball, and PMac is a little better shooter.

Never understood how guards and forwards, who spend almost their entire careers from about 6th grade on facing the basket. There's stress, of course, but the shooting mechanics should get any guard up around 75%.

The McC boys do have ugly looking shots. While contrary examples can be found the norm is bad form produces a bad shooter.

Speaking of Larry Bird, play some old video of his shot and then look at Joey W's shot. Very similar. One of the reasons I think Joey will be a big scorer the next two seasons. Great shot mechanics, always finishes with his shoulders square and his shooting hand level and pointing straight at the basket.

Its like putting. A guy with good putting mechanics won't miss many inside three feet. (I am not that guy).
