Bernie Sanders stumbled on a question at Sunday's debate over whether white Americans can empathize with blacks, stating that white people don't know what it's like to be poor.

"When you are white, you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto, you don’t know what it’s like to be poor, you don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you are walking down a street or dragged out of a car," Sanders said when asked about his personal racial blind spots. "We must be firm in making it clear that we will end institutional racism and reform a broken criminal justice system."

White people don't know what it's like to be poor?

In general, he's not wrong.

"Poverty rates for blacks and Hispanics greatly exceed the national average. In 2010, 27.4 percent of blacks and 26.6 percent of Hispanics were poor, compared to 9.9 percent of non-Hispanic whites and 12.1 percent of Asians."

So, 10 percent of whites know what it's like to be poor. Thanks for the stats.
You may not like the exact way Sanders worded it, but in general, he's right. White people don't have to live under the same conditions as black people. Black people's poverty rate is nearly 3 times higher. They have a far higher incarceration rate. They have to be worried about dealing with the police in a manner difference from white people.

If he would have said, "Americans don't know what it is like to be poor", he would have been correct.

Let me just say that you do not know what conditions almost anybody else lives under

I've been poor. I'm not anymore, but I know what it's like to be poor. This comment is insulting.
I've been poor, too. But it wasn't a generational thing and I never had to worry about the police hassling me. Once again, you may not like how Bernie worded it, but this is his basic point.

In general he is very wrong.

Blacks make up 12.3% of the population, so 10.75 million live in poverty.
Hispanic whites make up 17.3% of the population, so 14.7 million live in poverty.
Non-Hispanic Whites make up 61.9% of the population, so 19.5 million live in poverty.

The number of White people living in poverty nearly doubles the number of black people, but that doesn't help the narrative does it Huey?

So you're trying to claim that white people have it twice as hard as black people?

Should we take those statements as one entire statement or should we take each one as separate statements? I lean toward he was building upon each statement and did not intend each to stand on their own.

White people don't live in ghettos? What do you call a sleazy trailer park?

White people don't know what it's like to be poor? We've discussed this one.

White people don't know what it's like to be hassled by police or dragged from a car? Yeah, that's never happened to any white person ever.

This rhetoric is insulting. Sorry you can't bring yourself to admit that.

Bernie is racist. To say because of the color of your skin.... is the definition of racism. To say that whites don't know what it is like to be poor or live in poverty is absurd.

My wife is a teacher and the stories she tells me about white parents is amazing. A lot kids don't stand a chance from the start. Stupid, lazy, unlucky isn't specific to a certain race or ethnicity.

Imagine if Donald Trump said, "Black people don't know what it's like to be rich. They only know the ghetto, and being oppressed by the police."

Dumbest comment I've read on here in a long time and that's saying something.

Bernie has to respond like this of face the wrath of BLM..... All poor people don't matter, just like all lives don't matter. Get with the program.....
