Was listening to the On Iowa podcast from last night with Morehouse and Dochterman and Morehouse said but won't report it until next week when Barta is back from the Hawkeye cruise that Iowa will be adding a new center court scoreboard this off season. Anyone have any info on this or hear this as well? He said they'll be doing a few things to Carver to make the atmosphere a little different starting next season and that it starts with a new scoreboard. Not trying to spread rumors but that's what was said, but like I said he stated he won't "report it" for another week or two.

3 things should be a priority if they plan to keep Carver for a while

1) Move the students around the court. Don't care how you do it; just do it.
2) Scoreboard options- tough to do with the roof we have but I am sure we can figure it out.
3) Somehow, someway, they need to build something to disrupt the sight lines from the top of the arena to the floor. We cant have people leaving at the under 4min timeout and watching from the top to beat traffic...in close games even! I want to physically assault those people. Maybe they could ring it with suites. Not only would you keep people in their seats at the end of close games but it would hold the noise in the arena better as well.

Those would make huge improvements to the atmosphere there imo

I wonder if Fran used some of his new found clout to push Barta. Schools are going to want Fran. Gary is his assistant, right now.

I like the idea of suites at the top.......hopefully would get most of the sleepers during games out of the lowest level seats and make the lower levels noisier.

Students have had 3 years of an NCAA tourney team and now a top 10 team and still find excuses to not show. Move them to better seats they'll still find same excuses not to show and minus few big games it will be half empty. But just like Tom's article on front he mentions how are students have been disappointing and have been for some time. Bru and Horner's Sr year they finally showed up later half of season. And the disaster of the 01-02' season students were out in full force early until Iowa imploded. Iowa students are one of the last in the Big Ten who deserve court side seats. Look at ISU, Wisconsin and Purdue they aren't court side and they show up for every game.

Granted if I knew Iowa students would show up and be loud most games I'd be all for them having those seats but I'm pretty skeptical they will with their track record last 5 let alone 10 years.

I have a friend that has a cousin that has nephew that works as a maintenance engineer and he heard the new score board will be BIG and will show the score.....

Getting a portion of the student section around the court would be incredibly simple. Those first 5-12 rows are already temporary seating. They can be easily replaced with bleacher style seats that could be engineered in such a way that they do not rise like normal bleachers so the students standing wouldn't be an issue. And I would only do it 2/3 of the way around. Put the students behind both hoops and behind the benches. Leave the other side of the court the high dollar seats. There are always a couple hundred students at every game. These seats should never look empty.

There have been rumors of adding suites to the top of carver that would eat up a row or two at the top. This would make up for the high dollar seats lost to the added student ring around the bottom.

Technology upgrades inside CHA are a must. It is really kind of pathetic all of the technology upgrades that have gone on at Kinnick over the last 15 years and CHA has been basically forgotten. The technology screams small school. Our 3A high school has the same style technology as CHA just on a smaller scale. It is way beyond time to upgrade even if the roof won't allow a dropdown style scoreboard.

While I too want to see Carver updated, I feel like any money spent on it would be applying lipstick to a pig. The place just isn't designed well for basketball. I do agree putting students in the first few rows makes sense. But all of the space behind the baskets means it's almost impossible to have the students right on top of the court (which is why Kinnick is so great).

Maybe they should tear down CHA and build a new one on the east side of campus? Just a thought. Also, students at CHA have been abused as far as ticketing goes for years, and not just for basketball. It happens for wrestling meets as well.

This.

Knock it down or leave it up so they can continue to book awesome concerts. Oh wait.

student tickets should be free and first come first serve. It would create the demand we need. That would pack the place and solve a lot of these problems immediately.

i think Carver is a great venue for basketball and gets very loud when full.

that being said, the students around the court is a no-brainer. I also like the suites around the top idea, but maybe just on the sides. It nice to be able to go to the bathroom and concessions and still be able to look down from the top.

Why couldn't this happen? It should be the first thing tried before anything is done. If the students come on a regular basis and improves the atmosphere seating would not be as important.

Being they just spent millions of dollars on the upgrades with coaches offices, new practice addition, etc I doubt CHA is going anywhere

The "scoreboards" at CHA have been an embarrassment for a long time. They're so tiny you can't actually see the score, and the individual stats...wow. Horrible.

The ideas expressed here, and in various other threads from time to time, are mostly spot on. And gojojo and others are right: Free basketball for students on a first-come, first-served basis.

I said in a previous thread that, were I Fran, I would demand students around the floor for at least 8 rows on both ends and behind the benches. I would demand the suites at the top, and I'd demand a total overhaul of just about everything related to the game-day experience. And one key to that would be a PA announcer who knows the difference between college basketball and a wake.

Iowa has the resources to do pretty much whatever it wants. So as others have noted, all of this goes back to the people who are paid to run the athletic department, from the AD on down. I hope the podcast was accurate and that things are about to happen.

Carver has two problems that are both basically unfixable. First, the seats are very uncomfortable. There isn't enough height to the seat so it feels like you're sitting with your knees in your chest (that's an exaggeration but it is a noticeable difference). Second, the closer to the court you are the farther from the exits you are. People complain about people leaving early, well, it can take 30 minutes to get out of the stadium if you are near the court. Not that that's really an excuse, but that's something that will make people leave early (right or wrong). Honestly, I can't believe the design passes fire code.

Most of fire code is based upon construction and then you get grandfathered for most stuff except most glaring issues like exit signs, doorways, etc. so until they make significant renovations or remodels, not much to be done. I worked in 80 year old public building and the fire inspector just looked for windows and doors that opened and we're not blocked and use of extension cords and fire extinguishers

If the seats are uncomfortable. Take them out! Then people will freaking stand.

But seriously, all you have to do is look at what "The Pit" has for New Mexico State. CHA's design is based off the pit, need to look there for inspiration again.

This isn't quite true. I read that a proposal was brought to Harreld about bonding the new North Endzone and he wanted to see where the incremental revenue was coming from. There really wasn't any, so he told hem to come up with a different plan.

If you can't see the score on the scoreboard, you should make an appointment with your optometrist.

30 minutes? No. Just no

Where is this east side of campus?

Fine, do it, don't believe it. $5 is stopping them? They are paying that in cover and still not going.

Yeah, I get that, I'm just surprised that it passed code in 1980 (or whenever Carver was built). It's not like that was the dark ages of building codes.

Parking is the issue, and it's a BIG issue. When half of the dental lot is empty and people are walking their asses off from the outer parking lot, something has to be done. More advertising also needs to be implemented as well as upgrades to the facility.

Target the students and give them a court-side seat. They cater to the money donors WAAAAAYYYYYY too much. They should understand anyway that it's a national product and it looks horrible on TV because of them.

We are going to build a wall to keep the blue hairs out... and the best part? We are going to make THEM pay for it.

We are going to make Carver great again!

Barta has a plan.. a great plan... the best plan

And we are already winning so much that we will get bored with all of the winning. Just ask the people that leave at the under-8 timeout.
