Pretty green on LB depth but I like Garbutt and especially high on Hockaday's potential. Nick Wilson must have turned some heads early. Is it Niemann sitting out this Spring?

No James Daniels?

He's out because of surgery. Said Welsh graded out as the top olineman last year according to KF. try him out at center since Daniels is out.
Also said Wiegers is further ahead than normal #2 because of all the work he got while CJ was limited. Said Cook and Boyle are even.

...also would not be surprised to see Michael Ojemudia start at some point this season. Biggest steal of any recruit in the last 3 recruiting classes IMO.

Wadley is at 190 and has been keeping it there which is good news.
Said WR and TE are their biggest question mark areas this spring.

Only way he starts is if there are multiple injuries to King, Mabin, Jackson or Fleming which would not be good

Kyle Terlouw elected not to use 5th year of eligibility. I wonder if Slater eventually steps in as backup to Bazata?

Yeah, the following are out this spring due to off-season surgery. All are expected back by June according to KF.

James Daniels
Josh Jackson
Greg Mabin
Ben Niemann
Derrick Mitchell

early depth chart doesn't mean too much. upperclassmen get spot by default and we will see change ups after spring. Especially looking at James Daniels

I knew Hulett turned some heads last fall (he won an award for his efforts at the team awards banquet) and during bowl prep but did not expect him to be ahead of Slater at this point.

Interesting. I hadn't seen that.

Exciting QB news. I'd been hearing Boyle was the man. Obviously not. Very happy for Wiegers and this spring will help him even more. Excited to watch him.

My bad, I thought he was penciled in to compete at safety. I would think that, right now, Jackson is next man in if Mabin or King become injured but I doubt that MO is that much behind Jackson. Phil Parker has talked him up a bit.

Ojemudia can play corner or safety, but has been at corner mostly. Right now he'd be #5 at CB behind King, Mabin, Fleming, and Jackson when everyone is healthy, but 3 of those 4 graduate after this year so the depth chart will be wide open in 2017 for Jackson, Ojemudia, and the newcomers Rugamba, Boswell, and Billings.

Well I would bet at this point he is pretty far behind Jackson as Jackson played a lot last year and was relied on in some big spots. But I do think that MO looks like he has the tools to be a really good DB. That could be a really tall cornerback duo the following year with Jackson and MO.

I hope Scheel can hang on to the backup position at WR. I have high hopes for him and I am anxious to see what he brings to the field.

Nice to see Hockaday is moving up in the depth chart. I've been wanting to see what he can do for awhile now. I'm not digging Daniels at the starting RB position. Wadley is the playmaker of the group. I'd also like to see Mitchell get some more changes this year.

No real surprises at this point and that's a good thing. When a team starts 12-0 and returns a lot of starters its good not to see a whole lot of changes. Interesting that the team/players chose to wait out surgery for penciled in starters so long they will miss spring practice. While of course we don't want any new major injuries to come out of this, even for starters the spring is valuable time to get reps and work on techniques. A player like James Daniels could really benefit from this, and in a perfect world I would think you want as many reps as you can get with your top 5 OL to have them working together as many snaps as possible before the season. Its often discussed how the OL takes longer to gel but it wouldn't hurt to have your starting 5 together through spring and summer camp. Also, no matter who plays center whether its Welsh or Daniels since we're breaking in a new center you'd really like CJ and the QBs working with him for cadence, line calls, snapping both under center and in the gun...

Missing spring practice isn't going to be the end of the world, but a lot of development and continuity is made and built in a couple of weeks.

KF explained they hoped some players would heal without surgery so they waited. As for Daniels, he didn't wait. His procedure was done after Bowl game and it was know.n then that he would miss spring drills.
Drills and reps always help but common to have several players out for spring to get healthy
