New Video: 1998 Northwestern - Hayden's Last Victory

Thanks OP. That was a fun look at a bad season. At least 3 long time NFL'ers on that roster - Kampman, Devries, and Bowen.

Yes at the qb position.. they don’t show it but Reiners went down in that game against northwestern.. and Iowa settles using McCann the rest of the year..

Mullen played too. He got hurt that first quarter vs Ohio State.

Didn’t Vernon Rollins and Chris Knipper get hurt too?

Reiners bruised his elbow, but he finished this game. McCann had a hurt ankle, so Scott Mullen was actually the next guy in line, and it shows him warming up on the sideline in this video. He started the Ohio State game a few weeks later, so not sure McCann was the guy.

No the both where seniors in 97.. the te In 98 where Austin Wheatley and zeron flemister and some white guy

Rollins was injured his junior year,1997, against ISU. 1998 would've been his senior year and he got a medical redshirt too for 1999, but still was never able to return to the field in either year. He was still awarded a letter by Ferentz in 1999 which is pretty cool, so he was a four year letterman that only played 2.25 seasons. He'd probably be the all time leading tackler if he'd stayed healthy four years.

Knipper was supposed to start on the o-line in 1998, his senior year, but was academically ineligible and then left the team. He was actually supposed to move to o-line in 1997 but Flemister was suspended so he stayed at TE.

Jed Dull was the third TE in 1998 with Wheatley and Flemister. Zeron was still held out until the Indiana game though, where he caught his only Iowa TD (and Iowa's only one of the game). Then they had other redshirt TEs by the names of Eric Steinbach and Bruce Nelson that went on to do pretty well for themselves at Iowa (remember that when folks say Hayden left the cupboard bare for Ferentz).

That 1998 team actually cracked the top 25 in one of the polls after their opening shutout of CMU, but then the ISU streak came to an end the following week. Still gave Michigan a heck of a game that year considering we had about 100 yards of offense the whole game. That season is easy to remember because I was a frosh that year so it stands out, too bad it wasn't more successful but glad I was there for Hayden's last year (and Tom Davis too).

Interesting game. Really had some playmakers out there despite the bad year. Love to clone Betts DeVries Kampmann Woods and Kasper.
