Anyone make anything special for the full day of bowl games? (I know not the same now that its only 3 games instead of 5-6 like the good ole days).
Family tradition was to make pizza roll and chili. I'm throwing in some homemade buffalo chicken dip this year.
What is everyone else doing?

Our neighbor has us over every year for New Year's Day dinner, and it's always a treat, but "secret" until we sit down at the table. Two certainties are there, though: black-eyed peas and collard greens with ham fat/bacon. We get that every year. I'll have to wait until Wednesday afternoon for the rest. I do think Mrs. Nopics Ed is making a sweet potato souffle.

Me, I'm currently boiling a couple of pounds of peanuts for the football. Soaked all night last night, boiling today and then it'll sit out overnight in the brine to get the right amount of salt in.

We gnosh all day and then make pizza for the Rose Bowl. Nothing special, but no pic makes a mean cheese cookie that is super easy and super delicious (by my standards).

Wow. That sounds like a lot of southern tradition. Pretty cool.

I decided I’m going to do some pork chops and lamb pops.

Cheese cookie? Like Italian ricotta cookies?

Not sure yet, but definitely the traditional collards, black eyed peas (both with with ham hock thrown in), and cornbread.

I generally cook for all holidays, exception is New Year’s Day.

I’ll be Jersey Mike’s for lunch and then pizza/bbq/or Chinese take out for dinner.

I was curious to see the responses here. Growing up in central PA, it was practically a religious thing that everyone would eat pork and sauerkraut on New Years Day for good luck. I hated it as a kid. Literally, all of the grocery stores would have end displays of canned sauerkraut stacked to the ceiling. It wasn't until I moved to DC and got married that I learned that this was just a local Pennsylvania Dutch thing. My wife had literally never heard of it, despite her father being Alsatian. A mere two hours away, and not a can of sauerkraut to be seen. Same thing here in the Shenandoah.

It's black eyed peas in the South.

I HATE black eyed peas.

Philly cheesesteaks on the Blackstone I got for Xmas. I got a shipment of the Amarosa rolls and some fresh sliced ribeye from the local butcher. Hoping to somewhat replicate the GOAT of cheesesteaks, Dalesandro's:

I usually do black-eye peas with rice, collards and cornbread. This year, I'm going for some Cuban good luck making black beans and rice with fried plantains. My Pittsburgh wife has pork and sauerkraut as her traditional NYD meal.

Black eyed peas, lima beans and everything similar leaves this weird "scum" in your mouth that is not water soluble. Bleach.
The trick is to slow cook in stock, seasonings and ham hock, then mash about 1/4 of them or so. They come out similar to red beans and rice and are deliciously complemented with a wedge of cornbread (fried undercarriage in bacon gease and a supple, buttered top).

Some traditions are better off dead.

Well, I've heard Iowa folk here talk and post pics about their beaches before, so let me just say, my mild interest has now piqued into mild attention.
Any serious Iowan who has traveled would tell you Iowa “beaches” are an abomination. Florida is king when it comes to that. Now, we can swim without fear of being eaten, but our beaches suck. If you travel outside of Iowa to the Great Lakes there are sand dunes and beaches reminiscent of Florida gulf coast, but the water is cold AF, relatively speaking.

Some still call it Hoppin John and it’s a good luck thing.
Of course we’re having it. Southern tradition all the way.
I love local traditions but I’ll leave this one to the locals.

Oh I know brotha, been to all those states and have even witnessed rideable waves in Ohio and Michigan. Not that I'm gonna suit up and paddle out like the locals do. Those dudes and dudettes have a whole nother level of dedication that is not in these FL bones. But I will say, their stoke level embarrasingly inspires me and hits me in the feels pretty damn hard. Props to the Great Lakes crew!
