Obviously a lot of people are upset right now, and understandably so. There's no point, however, indwelling on this loss and bashing players and coaches. The senior class won 89 games, the second most in Iowa history, while bringing the program back to relevancy. So, let's talk about next year's lineup.

Potential starters
Williams/Bohannon
Jok
Uhl
Cook
Wagner

Bench
Jones
Baer
Fleming
Moss
Hutton
Pemsl/Kriener (does one redshirt?)

Next year will definitely be interesting. The younger players showed flashes, and I think they will improve a lot over the offseason. Maybe a bubble team.

Next year I could see the starters scoring less but the bench more hopefully a push.

You saw today how nice it is to have quick players that can slash towards the hole, It totally breaks down the defense. Nova had them, Iowa not so much. Can Williams and Moss add that element next year? I sure hope so. It will also be nice to have some muscle that can finish inside, Hopefully Cook,Kriener and Pemsl can add that element as well along with Wagner. Slowly but surely Iowa is getting more athletic, A couple of real difference makers at the Guard spot would be HUGE to get.

Why did I get a text about rumors of Jok looking at not coming back for Senior year and looking at potentially going to Europe?

Rumors are always going to swirl around, Bottom line for me is I have no idea what Jok wants to do, If he wants to leave, leave, Life will go on.

What does it say that Uhl hardly played in the 2nd half, especially at the end when the bench was emptied? I'm not sure it's a slam dunk that he starts next year.

I agree about Uhl... He's just not mentally there at times. He played ok the first half but his first appearence in the second half he accounted for 2 TOs in consecutive trips up the floor.

Part of me thinks it would be better if he moved on and get the scholly back. He has some ability but just way too inconsistent and not tough enough.

The thing that you really do need to remember about Dom is that he doesn't have a lot of experience, He is still learning the nuances of the game, He has talent, He lacks experience, I sure don't want to see him leave and I think he has a lot of potential and room to grow into a much better player.

Agreed on Uhl's talent and overall inexperience. I suppose it's hypocritical of me bemoaning his sometime over aggressiveness on offense, while bemoaning several other guys for their lack of the same.

As disappointing as today was, I can't help but think it might be a long time before we see the Hawks play into the first weekend of the tournament. These seniors that so many are kicking out the door are responsible for 57% of this year's scoring, 74% of this year's assists, and 59% of this year's rebounds. As much as I wish it were so, those numbers don't just get replaced by sticking four new/different guys on the floor.

I feel that Uhl will move on, has not looked happy out there since early February.

Need quality guards. No other way to say it. I'm not sayinmg we don't have any for next season. I'm just saying that we need more. High quality.
Iiowa needs to look at bringing in a top Jc point gd to help transition. Right now I don 't see a true pt gd on the team and I know some will have to leave to do it.

This sounds like a real thing. He can go through the combine and make his desicion after.

Dom is very skilled for a 6'9" guy and we need to keep him on the team. Like Uthoff he does more damage as a 3/4 but lack of front court depth has forced him into spot 5 minutes. He doesn't like playing 5 but if he transfers to a smaller conference or division he'll be asked to play in the post even more. I hope Dom stays and gains another 10 pounds of muscle this summer. He is a nightmare matchup for most 4/5's.

JU can score when he has space. That will need to be replaced by one or more players. Woody provided toughness, grit and unselfishness. AC played with a chip, decent defense at times but not much offense from the 2 guard spot. MG tried to create and distribute. Neither guard could consistently shoot and make the open three ball. What we will miss most is their experience on how to win when they could with what they had.

I am personally excited to see the next group as they might provide more athleticism which means we might be able to play & sustain better on-the-ball defense and we might get more ability to create something offensively when things break down.

I think we got as much out of these seniors as we could when you really look at it. They made us a borderline top 25 team which means you likely win a game in the tournament which they did. To win 2 games we have to get better players in terms of having less deficiencies as a group. That's always been the rub even under Tom Davis post George Raveling recruits. He made 1 sweet 16 post GR guys the rest of the time and had a couple of poor seasons mixed in there including a 9th place finish out of 10 teams. Not bagging on TD at all but thinking this signals we are basically back at that level.

I personally don't think you can start Cook and Wagner together. In today's game you need to have 4 players that can shoot the three on the floor at all times. The spacing would be terrible.

What I like about next year is the athletism from our 7-10 guys. I don't think we've had that sort of game from those players. Looking at the OPs starters and bench there's some atheltes that should push the starters. Hopefully we can find that guy who brings an emotional leadership. I think Wagner can be that guy.

Who the hell said life wouldn't go on if he left? The metrosexual drama is at an all-time high in these here United States.

More athleticism. Way more turnovers next year which will drive me crazy.
Average outside shooting as a team. We need more inside scoring than Woody gave us but I don;t see it coming. Less smart defense with more breakdowns next year, though there will be some athletic advantages. We will lose a lot of close games due to inexperience and close games does not seem to be Fran's forte either. Who can you count on at crunch time next year? Iowa will need several players to really improve. Uhl and Baer need more strength. Williams and Bohannon will need to really take care of the ball. We need to find a couple more ouside shooters besides Jok and Baer. Next year we will run hard with the athletes and maybe press more.
Bottomline, it will be a challenging year for fans.

We will have a full 13 on scholarship for next season. 10 of the 13 will be either freshman or sophomore.

Nicholas Baer, right now, will continue to be a preferred walk on (unless a scholarship opens up).

Will all 4 who are scheduled to graduate in 2019 actually still be around in 2019? Will all 6 who are scheduled to graduate in 2020 actually still be around in 2020? Will be interesting because I am not sure you want half your roster bunched into one year (6 are scheduled to graduate in 2020).

What is Fran's strategy with these classes set to graduate in 2019 and 2020? Discover his better players and tell the others that they will not see much playing time, with transferring the result?

Here is the break down of the Iowa roster by graduating class:

Graduating Class : Players

Future Graduating Classes:

2023: 1--6'6" SF Patrick McCaffery (not rated)
2022: 1--6'5" SG Joe Wieskamp (****)
2021: 1--6'5" SG Connor McCaffery (****)

Current 2016-2017 Roster (all 13 scholarships are accounted for):

2020: 6--6'8" PF Tyler Cook (****): 6'8" SF Cordell Pemsl (***); 6'9" PF Ryan Kriener (***); 6'0" PG Jordan Bohannon (***); 6'6" SF Brandon Hutton (***; was reshirted in 2015-16); 6'5" SF Isaiah Moss (***; ; was reshirted in 2015-16)

2019: 4--6'6" SG Andrew Fleming (***), 6'7" SF Ahmad Wagner (***); 6'4" SG Brady Ellingson (***; was redshirted in 2014-15 season); 6'6" combo guard Christian Williams (***)

2018: 1--6'8" SF Dominique Uhl (***)

2017: 2--6'6" SG Peter Jok; 6'8" PF Dale Jones

Notable Walk on players:

6'7" SF Nick Baer: listed as a preferred walk on; he redshirted in 2014; is set to graduate in 2018 (or 2019, if eventually put on scholarship)

Previous graduating classes:

2016: 4--PG Anthony Clemmons, PG Mike Gesell, C Adam Woodbury, SF Jarrod Uthoff

2015: 5--SG Josh Ogelsby, PF Aaron White, C Gabe Olaseni, SG Kyle Denning; PG Trey Dickerson quit/left the team on Feb 23, 2015

2014 (Fran's first recruiting class): 5--PF Melsahn Basabe, SG Devyn Marble, PF Zach McCabe, SF Darius Stokes (graduated & transferred), C Kyle Meyer (granted release & transferred; he redshirted his 2012 freshman season and therefore would have been se to graduate in 2017)

2013: 1--PG Patrick Ingram (would have been part of the 2016 graduation class; transferred in March 2013, after just one season at Iowa)

i really think that with 10 of the 13 scholarship players on our roster next year being either freshman or sophomore. we are going to go thru some growing pains next year

Here is hawkcentral's projected starting line up:

Projected starters

As mentioned, the starting five will be very fluid. But here’s one early forecast.

Point guard: 6-6 Christian Williams (soph.) — He got valuable experience down the stretch and showed versatility and is capable of being an excellent defender.

Shooting guard: 6-6 Peter Jok (sr.) — Jok has always flexed from the 2 to the 3, but either way, he could be Iowa’s first 20 ppg scorer since Adam Haluska in 2007.

Small forward: 6-9 Dom Uhl (jr.) — The German can play the 3, 4 or 5 and can be great if he finds consistency. He shot 45 percent from 3 last season and can be a 10-12 ppg scorer as a junior.

Power forward: 6-8 Tyler Cook (fr.) — McCaffery’s most heralded recruit since Gesell/Woodbury, Cook is an athletic, powerful player. Fresh off a big-school Missouri state championship, he'll have a shot to make an instant impact.

Center: 6-7 Ahmad Wagner (soph.) — He plays big and fast, perfect for the Big Ten and McCaffery’s up-tempo style. An excellent defender who needs to polish his offensive game and free-throw accuracy.

Its going to be a wild season. I've been thinking all day about the last time there was this much turnover in not just the starting five but losing so many multi-year starters. Uhl and Peter, of course, are the only two that look like certain starters.

Hawks could well have two or even three freshman starters before the season is over.

You did see Villanova abuse Iowa starters? The defense will be upgraded. Woody at center helped vs teams with true bigs that scored...that is only a few teams. CW/Wagner/Baer should have been playing a lot more this past season.

I personally don't think you can start Cook and Wagner together. In today's game you need to have 4 players that can shoot the three on the floor at all times. The spacing would be terrible.

Agree with this. Jones will be huge next year, I hope he gets healthy. Also don't see much quickness on the roster for next year, which is going to be a problem.

Not necessarily true.

Teams like North Carolina, MSU and Kentucky just to think of a few play multiple bigs together.

It has defensive and rebounding advantages.

There will be growing pains but I can't wait to see some tougher more athletic players out there.

Next year is a rebuilding year but hopefully the progress will be evident as the year goes on and they atleast play good D.
