Obviously Iowa has proven itself despite a heartbreaking loss. Now I can't help but wonder what next season will bring. I'm sure we've impressed some recruits. We also have some good players who can return next season if they want. What do you guys think our team will be like next year? I'm predicting maybe 11-1 and in the CCG again, and possibly getting into the CFP. I've never been this optimistic after a loss like this, so this tells me something special is going on. I want to see what other people think.

We will start somewhere between 10-15. N
But ISU, NDSU and Minnesota will be no picnic. But home games with Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska and NW will all be rocking. We are favorites for the division but CFP is an awfully tall order because there's so many chances to slip

With another year in the weight room under coach Doyle, for guys like Boone, Ike, Daniels bros, Wadley, freshman receivers Smith and Falconer, catch everything Matt V, and a healthy CJB and possibly a breakout party from Scheel, our offense will be 2x better than it was this year. The future is bright and I couldn't be happier having KF at the helm. Let's go kick Stanfords ass and cap off a historic season!

Agreed. Of course, the only way into the CFP is to win the CC, but depending on who comes back, I think we'll make it into the CCG. 10-2 is probably more realistic. But I'm just so proud of our boys and our coaches. I think KF's biggest tool was that no one gives us a chance. Someone pointed out that our best years under his era have been when experts didn't give us a chance. He's used that as a chip on their shoulders, but now that everyone knows we're good, what will the chip be this time?

What you said!
KF will face a nagging challenge that so far he has not handled well, and that is, the challenge of high expectations.
True. I just hope KF2.0's hunger for more will be enough to drive future success.

The defense could be outstanding next year, especially if King stays and Ott gets medical redshirt. If Parker trusts the corners to cover like he did tonight, Taylor will be free to be a roving playmaker.

Finding/developing a kicker and punter is key.

You will mean revert next year and with a nobody schedule be 7-5 ish. Man you only had to beat one half decent team - no way this is even a top 25 team.

To be fair the west will probably come down to Iowa or Nebraska. They have the talent to win even with erratic qb play. They did out yard both us and Mich st. by a bunch.

Haha they lost to Illinois and Purdue and have a brutal schedule.. 5 wins again for Nebraska next year, book it!

The skirts only beat Minny in the division. not what any rational observer would equate to a challenger next year.

Enjoy your VHS tapes of nebraska's past glory. That is all they have.

I do not bet but your Nebraska prediction is almost certain to be wrong. The Illinois and Purdue losses win should be wins unless something happens to T-Arm and Jordan Westerkamp. Little Nebby will likely have 3 or 4 losses before they play Iowa (Oregon, tOSU, and Wisconsin with a chance that Northwestern beats them). MInny, Maryland and Indy may put up a fight but I doubt that they beat Nebby. A returning qb and top WR and good RB can forge a decent offense. Nebby's OL and secondary will take some experience hits and could be exploited. Expect T-Arm to be sacked more next year. I hate seeing Nebby get a bowl bid with a losing record and get 15 extra practices. Not good.

Teams that have to replace an experienced signal caller suffer as the qb gains live action experience. Replacing more than two OL position at one time without much game experienced replacements yields more qb hurry ups and sacks. Especially, replacing a LT.

I do concur with you that the Bugeaters will not be an elite team.

Pretty hard to expect a repeat of this year, especially with PSU and Michigan on the schedule. Our division home schedule is very favorable. Not worried about the huskers. They are pretty far away from being relevant and wisconsins conference schedule is brutal. I can see 10-2 record and a division title. Maybe a rose, orange or cotton bowl bid. Who knows. Maybe MSU and OSU are down a little and get a conference title too. I'll go into next season with the exact opposite expectations that I had going into this season. If King and Ott are back and Beathard stays healthy it could be another special season.

Hackenburg (PSU QB) should go pro as PSU does not offer a chance of major improvement and he would be better off grooming under a Tony Romo situation for two years. Ped State is the least of Iowa's worries. Michigan needs a QB upgrade.

O line must get better at pass protection. If we give CJ time he could be great. I would like to see the two OT's pushed for playing time by some of the young guys.

Agree on pass pro. Hope someone steps up and at least one OT moves inside.

Blythe and Walsh are the best OL by a pretty wide margin. Replacing them will be tough.

Walsh? He's been better this year but Daniels and Welsh practicing in the spring ball should help things along very well. True freshman James Daniels oozes potential AA G or C. Sean Welsh missed spring ball reps. Still a redshirt sophmore. Better days ahead. Boone is just not the man necessary for the LT position. His foot quickness is better guard suited. Steven Ferentz might play center next year - legacy. The Paulsen boys seems like candidates for tackleswith their wrestling background and mean streaks ( I've heard) should shore up the depth at tackle. Ike B. should get better and healthier.

10 wins would be a great season next year.
To expect a repeat of this season's lightning strike is an invitation to be disappointed.

Gotta think King's more likely to come back now. Still, I would've rather had the win. I'd much rather be 13-0 getting no respect than 12-1 and having everyone patting our backs, too.

Walsh is the only Hawkeye to make 1st team all BIG on offense this year and it was by the coaches. Very good player.

I agree Daniels will likely be a great player. Even if he's 1st team all BIG next year, the OL needs others to get a lot better too.

As good as King was this season, his interception numbers have not increased much in the last few games. I think it hurt his status some as he was not going against $EC or Big 12 (major pass throwing offensive) teams. Projects as a mid third rounder be more reliable mock models. Cook was the only NFL draft qb he faced.

Definitively think that #15 Joshua Jackson makes good strides to become a starter. Mabin might move to safety ( better fit( or if pros give King different advice as to draft status, he might switch like Micah Hyde did. Maybe Marcel Joly switches to DB (CB). I don't see Joly at RB when he could play.

Would LeShun play FB with Wadley as fullback is a spot that needs filling. Graham and Mitchell will push for playing time. Daniels is not a pro RB (IMO) but could do damage and be a great change up in play action. Daniels blocks well enough and can carries occasionally or make a short range catch and turn it up north. Iowa has a 3 RB recruiting commits for the RB spot.

I think there will still be an edge on this team. The important thing is to not get caught up in the success of last season. I don't want to hear the "we have a goal to make the playoff." You got to have a "next game mentality" like they did this year. Not once this year did Iowa come out and lay a turd, and that's why they went 12-0. It is so hard to beat everybody.

Next year we add Penn State and Michigan, NW looks to be tough, as will Wisconsin and Nebraska. I think with the national perception bias, and tougher schedule we could drop 1 game and still make the playoff.

Good point. We don't want to become like Nebraska fans, who all have clinically diagnosable mental problems and seriously expect nat'l championships every single year despite sucking, and then act surprised when it becomes clear after the season opener that maybe it was a little irresponsible to have that expectation.

Yup I agree. We had some lucky bounces/breaks this year and that is why we were 12-0. I don't think we will see the same luck next year.

I think our schedule gets tougher and will more difficult. I could see a 10-2 or 11-1 possible into the CCG.

But I also predicted Iowa this year to be 7-5 and a music city bowl invite, so much for me knowing what Im talking about.

regardless it should be a good year.

Just like the beginning of this season, I will not have any expectations. Just take the season for what it is. The winning is more exciting and the losing is less frustrating when you throw expectations out the window, in my opinion.

I just hope Iowa can do next year what they couldn't do in 2010....continue to build on what they started in the previous year. I would like to think that Iowa could be a fixture in the top 25 more often than not. We can debate all we want why that is or isn't something that could be done in iowa city, but when you see the team in Madison have success more often than not I am optimistic it can happen at Iowa too

This could be the start of a good run. If Iowa can build like you said on this and turn it into a positive and end the year with a Victory. That will set them up for some momentum heading into next year. Our division is breaking in new coaches and we get a lot of "tough" opponents at home next year, which will help the hawks. There are definitely some playmakers in the program, hopefully they can learn and get bigger and become playmakers.

The next year could be spectacular. This year, while we had a lot of success, we still dealt with some key injuries. Drew Ott went down. Canzeri and Daniels missed time. Myers and Boettcher missed multiple starts. T. Smith was out for a month.

The young depth, while unheralded, was better than we had hoped. What we saw this year was that Iowa remains a developmental program. The key for next year will be for the same intense development to occur during the off season and into the fall. But the cupboard is far from bare, and we have another year CJ. I like our chances.

The injuries to Ott, T Smith and Canzeri opened PT for Hesse, J Smith and Wadley, respectfully. Wadley should be the true heir to Canzeri's spot as #1 RB. LeShun is the Weisman bull rb who goes north and south but rarely gains more than 4 yards a carry. Wadley may not be the tackle breaker runner but he can take the toss sweep and hit the edge quickly. Better OL blocking next year should produce a 1000 yard+ rusher before regular season ends. Wadley needs more pass catching reps as defenses probably see him as only a ball carrier and not a receiving option. Inversely, the same could be said of Derrick Mitchell as he seems to be the pass blocking release value of passing downs only. Just reading the tea leafs.

Hesse has been impressive but undersized. He will get bigger but why does Iowa always have such age class gaps between starters (seniors and red shirt freshmen). I just wish Iowa's recruiting was more solid as to the level of scholar-shipped athletes that developed in the program. Seems like a good class only has 60% that stays its time and getting a couple good recruiting classes in succession is a major mountain to climb. Guess that is why they say that recruiting is an inexact science.

The WRs corp looks to be getting better as Iowa seems to be finding better quality WRs. J Smith will learn the routes and reads better next spring. Hope Scheel, Falconer, Ogwo and Parker can bring speed and depth to open CJ's hand.

Agreed. Although, I do think Daniels looked pretty good when he was able to play. Another year of working on technique, getting stronger and I think he can be a pretty good G as a true Soph. I also think that the trio of Myers, Colston and Boettger should yield better tackles than we had this year for the same reasons as Daniels improving.

Offense line should be pretty good next year. Daniels moves to Center, Welsh at one guard spot, and Ike, Myers, and Croston fill out the two tackle spots and the other guard spot. Replacing T. Smith won't be easy and keeping CJ healthy will be crucial. Defense should be fine even if King goes pro. All that being said, a 10 win season is going to be tough with the schedule for 2016.

If they beat Stanford there is no way they won't be preseason top ten next year.
