Next Year's Starting Lineup

If Cook doesn't play 20+ minutes per game and average double digit points, I'll be surprised. He's a legit All-Big 10 Freshman team guy.

Williams
Jok
Uhl
Cook
Jones

Baer as sixth man energy guy
I agree with 4 of these six players. I think Jones is still a bit iffy even though all reports are that he is successfully recovering from the knee injury. He might be better suited for a bench role even if healthy too.
Uhl is the real wild card of this list. I don't think he has shown enough this past season to believe that he is really developing like many thought a year ago (myself included). He provides nice length and some matchup issues but also has some holes in his game, primarily on the defense and effort levels. He can look really good for a couple minutes and then look equally terrible for a couple minutes all in the same game. His shooting is a bit suspect too, but we have lived with Clemmons, Gesell and Woody for several years so that is not a priority for Fran though.

I agree with your projection but I think that Fran will redshirt only one of the two big guys out of Iowa, Kreiner or Pemsl. I would hope that it would be Pemsl so that he can continue to rehabilitate his knee. I think that Bohannon could be huge since he has the ability at the PG position to knock down the three and is a very consistent free throw shooter. He is the guy to have at the line with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game.

Cook is probably the biggest recruit that Fran has landed at Iowa. He has been after him for a long time and Fran finally got a player that he identified early on and recruited very hard. Cook will give us the inside presence offensively that we haven't had with Woody. This should help to open up our outside shooters since teams won't be able to leave Cook alone one on one in the paint. With Kreiner and Pemsl we have two players with size and players that have post moves and like to play inside as well. With the continued development of Wagner, we may not need either player right away but we will finally have some bulk inside to work with and will be able to develop an inside presence that will take some of the pressure off of the outside shooters.

He has a pure 3PT shooter IMO and pure shooters will always have value in today's game.

This pure shooter shot 12-44 from 3pt territory this year...granted, his first full year of playing.

I'm all for optimism, but I just don't see it with this player. This seems like another JO. I would not be displeased if he were to transfer and his scholly given to Baer.

I just don't see a starting 5 that doesn't include Uhl. He was the first man off the bench this season and should be ready to take a leading role on this team next season. I think it ends up something like this:

1-Williams
2-Moss
3-Jok
4/5-Uhl/Wagner
Jones will be the first guy off the bench.

Uhl/Wagner/Jones/Cook/Baer should all get about equal minutes between the 3/4/5 spots.

Yeah, I think a lot of folks here are either forgetting about Moss or under rating what he will bring (I've seen several show 9 deep without he or Hutton mentioned).

If you're depending on Kriener being 'desperately needed from day 1', Fran is in trouble. Having seen both in person, Kriener doesn't look any bigger than Pemsl. Kriener's profile lists him at 6-9 240. Pemsl is listed at 6-8 235. Cook is listed at 6-8 240. It sounds like Cook is the best athlete of the bunch and will probably get the nod to play right away. Kriener would benefit greatly from a RS season.
Woodbury came in at 7-1 230 according to Rivals. He had the height, but Kriener is longer than Woody. As long as he isn't a huge liability, I don't see any reason why Kriener or, for that matter, Pemsl can't get spot minutes if we are in foul trouble or when guys need rest.

I'm not saying that Kriener is ready to make the jump from Class 2A basketball to D1 Big Ten basketball; my point is simply that his body doesn't necessarily prohibit he or Pemsl from potentially receiving minutes. We had a guy in Woodbury who, IMO, was less physically and athletically ready for Big Ten basketball starting as a freshman on a team which made the NIT Championship.

Kriener could absolutely give spot minutes if an emergency situation. That is completely different than being desperately needed. It would more beneficial to Kriener and the team as a whole if he could RS instead of play spot minutes in a few games next season. I think Fran will have plenty of post guys to find minutes for next year.

Don't forget that Woody went to a skills camp with the best big men in high school in attendance and he was Big Man MVP of the camp. He was also a top 50 recruit with multiple P5 offers. Iowa is Kriener's only P5 offer.

Why waste a redshirt for "spot minute mop up duty"? I feel that we will have adequate depth at the 4 and 5 position next year with Cook, Wagner, Jones, Uhl and even Baer (he did play Center for a 4a power). I don't think we will need Kriener or Pemsl for that matter as if I had to choose one to play as a frosh, would be Pemsl. Both could use a redshirt year and will only help their development. Why not let them bulk up and potentially grow another inch or 2 and be an even better big men for 4 years rather than work through growing pains for 1 and only have 3 years left.

I wasn't really arguing the "desperately needed" portion of your comment. Simply just pointing out that I don't think his size would prohibit him from playing and that he would be capable of spot minutes in theory. That was what the majority of my response was directed towards. And I never compared Woodbury/Kriener's skill, just that they are physically pretty similar to support my claim that Kriener's body won't be what would hold him back from receiving minutes.

I'm actually in agreement with you in terms of it being most beneficial for Ryan to redshirt.
