The argument can go both ways. Is it worth it to tie up a bunch of money on 5th year seniors? Would the money be better spent on acquiring and developing young guns and getting 4/5 years out of them?

In a perfect world yes...but we're not doing a good job landing the young guns, so we have to take the 1/2 year guys.

We've had very good success there, however we aren't landing any guys to step into the gap after the hired gun leaves. So we have to go out and try to find more 1/2 year guys.

It’ll be interesting to see how Deloitte impacts NIL after April 7th with their fair market value assessments stemming from the House settlement on the horizon.

In this era you play it one year at a time. The freshman you invest in can leave you the next year for someone that pays more. If you aren't NIL-centric at this point you are watching the ship sail Maybe it'll change again in the near future if they get it under control, but for now you have to spend, spend, spend, even if it's just to keep your own Covid year guys like RBY and Starocci at PSU. Getting Bo Bassett for a freshman year doesn't mean you have him for a sophomore year, it can all start over again. There isn't any reason every athlete can't enter the portal when there is no rule that you can't return when it's all said and done. Obviously the top schools have the same built in advantages they always did in retaining talent, but it's still going to cost you.

You don't spend that type of $ on HS recruits. You spend that $ on proven AAs as transfers. Most top 10 teams now will have a transfer or 2 a year filling in holes. Most HS recruits don't get the type of $ as transfers do because they've not proved it yet. If you go to Penn st or Iowa and you win you win be compensated nicely
