NIT Foul Rules

Is the idea behind going to quarters to reduce the amount of foul shots and thus stoppages of play?

Preaseason tournaments actually mean something.

Sorry not up to speed yet with these and didn't watch any other games yesterday, is this both halves we are speaking of?

If a foul occurs right at the 10:00/9:59 mark, will either coach be able to ask the officials to review to determine exactly when the foul occurred?

I think this whole thing is stupid. Why do games need to be squeezed into 90 minutes?

EDIT FOR ADDITIONAL QUESTION: Or is there a clock stoppage at 10:00 to delineate the breaks?

Jeez! If you're gonna do that just go to four quarters and get it over with!

It reduces the impact of terrible college refs. When you get whistle happy refs that call a bunch of fouls in the first few minutes of the game at least it only effects that quarter and not the rest of the half. Hopefully the end of games will actually be basketball instead of a free throw shooting contests.

I don't think they've worked everything out with TV timeouts if they go to quarters but there is a chance you would have one less break and they may just extend the other TV timeout by 30 seconds or so to make up for it. This is all great for the flow of the game.

They aren't doing quarters, they are just running the halves as two segments each. My guess is they don't want to go to quarters because of the way TV timeouts would work. They'd lose an automatic stoppage by going to quarters, current is 16/12/8/4, with quarters it would be (if they follow the women) 5/quarter/5. That's a lot of revenue to make up when you consider the number of televised games. They'd have to stretch out the stoppages, along with halftimes, to make up the difference.

As an aside, that's the same reason baseball won't take the steps that would actually shorten games. The between the innings tv "timeout" has gotten far longer over the years. Why? Ad revenues. They won't go back to the minute or so required to throw 6-8 pitches.

I'd be fine with them extending each break by 30 seconds to get rid of one and play quarters. While it may result in the same game length overall it would help flow of the game.

I really want quarters too and fewer team time outs. There's nothing worse than stoppages in play for all sports. Go to quarters and take longer TV breaks between the quarters to make up for the lost TV stoppage during active play. Fewer team timeouts (maybe 1 per half) allows the players actual play to decide games by reducing the coach involvement in game flow. No more quick TOs after one team makes 2-3 unanswered baskets in a 4 minute stretch!

The other aspect that could be done with quarters is awarding points for games. Each team gets 4 points for a win, 1 point for each quarter won and a bonus of 2 points for a road win. If the game goes to OT you only get 2 points for a win to highlight the close nature of the win or loss instead of 4. These points are tracked and used in seeding and determining the at-large bids for the NCAA tourney only. They can be broken down easily by points earned against the top 50, 100 too or any other metric. The point for each quarter also provides the element of 'game control' to a win or loss. Some team goes crazy in one quarter only and gets a home win it's worth 5 (4 + 1) while the loser gets 3. A road win is also valued with 4 + 2 + at least one quarter won could be a 7+ point win. The win, road win and quarters won (game control) are all valued in a point system.

Using a point system could help every team know where they stand at-large and take away the stupid moving target criteria from the selection committee for at-large and seeding. In fact you may no longer need this worthless committee as it is now.

I think that's the direction things are going. International and professional leagues go for quarters. Seems fairly easy to do. Make the quarter break a minute longer, extend halftime by 2 minutes and that should be it.

I understand its not quarters yet but I thought the point was to eventually get to quarters like the women's game.

On the flip side teams like MSU and Wisconsin will be able to foul constantly, like tbey already do, but with even less consequences.

End of games will still be the same. Just now you'll be shooting 2 FTs after 4 fouls instead of 10................

But they want to speed the game up, right?

I kinda like the idea of only resetting the shot clock to 20 sec instead of 30 after a foul. Mentioned they were toying with the same after an offensive rebound going to 20 instead of full 30.
