This will be IOWA’s 1st time since 1994, 30 years, in which Iowa has failed to play in any post season game. No NCAA, no NIT, no BTT.

I had to go back and look when it was, even lickliter made the BTT…

Is there a definition for being worse than this?

Big tournament only started qualifying teams this year. Your post is factually correct but highly misleading.

I would say LIckliter's last team with Gatens and Cully Payne was worse than this squad, but the overall quality of BTT bottom feeders is higher now then it was back then.

How many times did Fran lose the 1st game in BTT to a lower seed? Maybe half the years? He has a losing BTT record. So half the time we might as well not showed up for BTT.

If Freeman had stayed healthy, maybe Iowa pulls out another win and makes BTT and NIT, though its unclear which conference game we could have won with Freeman. Oregon game was close.

I am ready for a housecleaning and a new era with a different coach. NIL situation has to be fixed. We can't be last or near last in NIL.

I’ve not looked, but I would say Fran has lost more tourney games to lower seeds than he was won over the higher seeds,
Then if you factor in the weight of the seeds, I believe it’s even worse,

This team would need more than one win to make the NIT. Barring qualifying and then making a run to the big ten tourney semis (likely champ game) this would be a CIT/CBI/whatever third tier tourney exists.

For fun and because I have some time:

Fran's overall postseason record at Iowa - 20-23 (actually not as bad as I thought)

NIT 7-4 (his crown jewel of postseason performance) - 3 games beat higher seed, 2 games lost to lower seed, 6 games chalk

BTT 9-12 - 2 games beat higher seed, 6 games lost to lower seed, 13 games chalk

NCAA 4-7 - 1 game beat higher seed, 3 games lost to lower seed (last 3 games played), 6 chalk, 1 loss to equal seed

Best finishes:

NIT runner-up (2013)

BTT winner (2022)

NCAA second round loss in OT (2019) (3 other second round games were non-competitive)

It's too bad the 2020 team didn't have a postseason. That group was banged up, but had a lot of heart.

Iowa has trailed by double digits at halftime of each second round game and never led in the second half of a 2nd round NCAA tournament game under Fran.

Can you imagine the Carver crowd if they somehow had a home game in that third tier tourney?

Actually, that loss to TN in 2019 was "almost" creditable. Left for dead at halftime, my wife and I stayed at sports bar watching because we had food orders coming out. He'll of a comeback to get it to OT.

Thanks for summarizing…yeah, pretty sad that he has to hang his hat on his NIT performances…
Watching that Utah loss (and Tony P mailing it in) was one of the low points for me. The @ss kicking by Oregon was a reality check on where our program stands on the national pecking order outside of BT play….😎

Agree.
In 6 NIT appearances Fran got to the finals, 1x,
NOT the top line of a P5 coaches resume….

Next time you get a chance, it would be interesting to see the win margin and loss margin in Frans post season results
Something tells me it will also show the lack of competitiveness Frans teams show in tournaments

In the 1st year that the BTT has a qualifying record, Fran fails to qualify
Somehow isn’t that representative of all his post season games?
In the end, we will not qualify for either the ncaa OR NIT tournaments. I still think that is the measuring stick. The BTT is more complicated. Someone could argue we qualified 14/15 years (that is disingenuous IMO). While others will say we are zero for one. Which is true, but how do we compare that to all of the past years?

I am open to an objective way to evaluate it, I welcome your thoughts.

It’s not the first time in 30 years that Iowa didn’t play in any postseason tournament. It’s the first time in six seasons (2019-2020) that Iowa did not play in any postseason tournament.

So beyond being misleading, he’s factually incorrect as well.

Technically true, but covid wiped out the postseason that year, so I don't really count it. Iowa was dancing in 2020 if not for that.

2017-18 (19 losses) was the last time as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry, my friend. I'm not a stats gopher that fetches on command. You've got access to all that information, too. Would love to see what you come up with.

There is being worse than this, yes.

In fact, in the last 30 years there have been 7 Iowa Hawkeye men's basketball teams (or 23.3% of them) that have finished with a worse record, by win %, than this year's team currently has.

  • ’99-00 (Alford)
  • ’07-08 (Lickliter)
  • ’08-09 (Lickliter)
  • ’09-10 (Lickliter)
  • ’10-11 (McCaffery)
  • ’11-12 (McCaffery)
  • ’17-18 (McCaffery)

Not a post in defense of McCaffery -- I feel as disillusioned about the team as most here -- but some perspective is needed.

I believe we have finished .500 or better in the big in every season except those 3 above in McCaffrey era, plus this season of course. But we have never made a peep in the ncaa tournament in that same stretch. Time to reshuffle the deck.

What if the BTT berth rides on last game at NE?
And Iowa lays a 25 point loss egg…?
Then what happens to Fran?
What you say could be the scenario. Either way only Fran knows the answer to your question, maybe Beth does also.
Only option is wait and see,
