North Carolina fans have their heads buried in the sand

A friend I rarely see texted me last night and asked if I was watching the game. I said I was, but that I had reservations because of the UNC academic fraud scandal. At that moment, I found out he was a UNC fan (I have no idea why; he grew up and went to school in North Dakota).

His reply, and I quote: "Still a lot of debate surrounding that--if it happened and when, if so, can't hold a grudge over something that's not even proven."

I told him that North Carolina did its own investigation and found 18 years of academic fraud in order to keep athletes eligible.

His reply, and I quote: "For the moment, I am going to be happy. If the team should have been or will be penalized, so be it. Until anything is resolved by them, all is good with this team. The past is over and done. If things are vacated or whatever, I can't control it. If you wish to cast a cloud further over my evening, you will be ignored."

Anybody else encounter anything like this?

My thoughts: UNC has pushed back on the NCAA and has delayed punishment. Last night they got a huge reward. They have a 6th championship now and the NCAA probably can't touch it. This championship will probably be offset at least by having to vacate the 2005 championship (where there were players who played who more than likely will be found to have been ineligible). If the NCAA had been more aggressive, UNC would have been punished and on probation this season; UNC would not/should not have been in the postseason this year. And this is why REWARDING UNC with a national championship trophy makes me sick. We are REWARDING a school that long ago should have been PUNISHED.

Yea they come off as such a high level academic institution. Not on the level of Duke or anything that I think people don't want to believe it. Also Roy just has this way about him that you'd never think he'd do anything wrong. He can play dumb all he wants and say he had no idea... I feel like any coach would know that is going on. Please don't get conveniently stupid.

Dude, you should see a physician because that hard-on you've had for UNC has been waaaay longer than 4 hours. We all get it; you don't like them.

Well, once this whole thing wraps up, and the NCAA declares a ruling, all of the wins, championships, etc. will be wiped off the books from the offending years.

In short, don't worry about it. Just like the Fab 5 at Michigan, UNC will meet karma before too long.

You think that's bad? Go read the delusion on their rivals board! They literally act as if nothing happened and take shots at the integrity of everyone else's program..

What I don't get is they don't believe their own university's investigation that stated that there was 18 years of academic fraud in order to keep athletes eligible

from what i understand, the 2005 title is definitely in jeopardy; the 2009 title? not so sure. but what sucks is that the 2017 title probably can't be touched now

Why should the 2017 title be in jeopardy. These kids had nothing to do with the past issues.

Roy Williams is the only person on that team that you can realistically have a problem with. I'm not a fan of the Heels, and don't care for Roy, but had no problem cheering for them over Gonzaga

His point is that they shouldn't be allowed to compete for titles knowing that this is there. There has been foot dragging, which has allowed them to profit off these past two years of great basketball teams, when the results of investigations will likely include probation. If the investigations had been completed in a timely manner, the public evidence suggests another team would have taken their spot in the tournament as they would have been ineligible.

I agree the 2017 title should not be in jeopardy. But if the hammer does eventually fall and scholarships are taken away (future scholarships) and probationary post season bans take place? I won't feel any pity for players who signed on knowing about the investigation.

Having lived in NC for 12 years, not sure why any Iowa fan would care? And before all the smack talk begins, I am a proud 1998 Iowa business grad.

So as a business grad you have an idea what rules, regulations and laws are. And as someone who follows college basketball you know that Iowa and UNC are both in D1.

I don't see a need to smack talk, I'm sure you can figure out why an Iowa fan should care.

Correct. If this had been resolved more quickly, UNC would not have been playing for the National Championship both last year (they lost) and this year (they won). The issue is that UNC should have been on probation and ineligible for the 2017 post season. Period. But hey, UNC has some good lawyers. And unfortunately, the 2017 National Championship won't be stripped. The 2005 and 2009 National Championships, however, could be. So UNC has gained a championship (this year) and might lose one (2005 is most likely). Not right.

UNC makes money for the NCAA.
Donald Trump makes money for TV networks.

CBS Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves said of Donald Trump's presidential run: "It may not be good for America, but it's damn good for CBS."

Point being, wether it is college basketball or national politics, it's all good as long as money is being made. Rules and regulations, fair play, et cetera are all secondary concerns.

and that's why watching the Big Dance was hard for me. Watching North Carolina win the National Championship, knowing that they cheated for decades, was not much fun

Big time college sports are all about the money, unfortunately, and to hell with academics. Just keep the players eligible, any way possible.
