A fresh discussion, ready for your fresh perspectives.

What do you hope to score as a team this year and what do you hope to allow? And let's be realistic.

Okay, I know that won't happen, so here's a few points of interest: 1. Purdue won the league with a league leading 77.7 points. They allowed 69.6 in that winning campaign.

2. Wisconsin lead in points allowed, defending at 63.2 points.

3. Iowa was second in points for, at 77 flat. They were next to last in points allowed at 77.9. Kinda makes you wonder how we finished as well as we did.

Have at it, if you will.

I hope for 75 points for and 70 against. Our defense needs to improve by a lot and I think we lose a little offense with the absents of Peter Jok.

Offensively...much much better....who is the opponent going to focus on?
Last year it was Jok...and our young guys didnt always react.
Previous year it was stop (AKA mauling) Uthoff & Jok..we didnt have enough weapons to offset.

Now...JBO? Moss? Baer? Cook? Garza? Pemsl? Kriener? just to name a few..opponents game plan should be zzzz:confused:. Most balanced team since Fran has been at Iowa.

Defensively...Garza will make a difference...rebounding will be better as well.

I think offense will end up slightly better in points production but much more efficient. Reason being we'll work to get the ball inside better.

On defense I think we'll give up far fewer second chance points. And I expect a bit better than average defense in the Big Ten.

78 ppg on offense, giving up about 72 on defense.

Agreed, we played 1 on 5 on offense way to much last year.

Offense should be much better with everyone engaged and looking to score.

Offensively, they’ll change up the philosophy. With Uthoff and Jok, the offense worked outside to in but there wasn’t a consistent enough inside threat. The few years before that our offense came exclusively inside.

This year, there should be a better balance in that we have players who can get points at all three levels.

Defensively, I don’t see a reason why rebounding shouldn’t get a lot better. I think Luka is going to clean the glass in a way we haven’t seen for a while. We have other guys that can hopefully improve there too.

I don’t know if the perimeter defense will get better, but it has to.

I’ll say 79 on offense and 71 on defense.

Defense definitely needs more improvement than the offense, and has to be a lot better than what we saw for the first third of last season. I honestly don't care how we win, but unless something drastic happens, like not having our PG, we will continue to be among the league leaders in points scored (approaching 80). I hope for better team defense, and at least a 5 ppg drop in the points allowed. Let's hope that translates into an even better record.

This is possible. With our current frontcourt, inside offense has the potential to be the best it's been in perhaps decades- POTENTIALLY I say. The rebounding and D will improve, not just from particular player potential but from increased experience. But we're probably approaching the ceiling at 79pts/71ptsD... at least, this year.

Mostly agreed.

What I'd like to see??? Off - 95 Def - 85

72 on offense, 68 on defense. Jok could fill it up and was a consistant viable option at the end of the clock. We'll be able to score from more places, but I'm not sold we have anyone who can create for themselves at the same rate Jok did.

Defensively I see us much better just from having more size inside, more fouls to give in post defense, better and more experienced depth, and hopefully a better understanding of help defense. Defensively there should be significant growth from freshman to sophomore.

I still say we have enough bodies to have 2 squads playing a completely different brand of basketball than the other. Squad1 is the normal starters with an Inside focus (Garza,Pemsl, Cook) which then kicks it outside if they get stymied to some great 3 point shooters, JBo at PG, Moss/Ellingson at the "2", Baer/Nunge, at the "3".

Squad2 is the quick, long-armed swarming gazelles that will slap the press on you, speed up the tempo, turn you over and get points in bunches off of the fast break. If the press is broken, they fall back into a zone with those quick feet and long wingspans: CW, Dailey, Moss, AW, Uhl. 5 minutes of frenetic pace. Once the other team starts to adjust?

Bring back squad1. It would make us hard to prepare for. Also gives everyone some important minutes. Plus we have a lot of interchangeable parts on who plays the 2, 3 and 4.

This is a very interesting topic......I agree that if we platooned players they could very well do this and make it very hard for other teams to prepare for basically playing against two different teams/styles in the same game.
