Imagine Bohannon, CJ Fredrick and JW shooting lots an lots of 3's? Tony Perkins coming in will be amazing! We have the best center ever! Player Of The Year!!! Luka Garza. We will be upgraded with the return of Jack. Sadly RK will graduate. He's having a good year as a senior. We have some promising youngsters coming in. I like this incoming class! Fran and company are getting their guys in their recruiting, then coaching them up...Success this year and next, could get the Hawks back!!! Hoping selfishly to get Wheezy and Luka back next year!!! Kenyon Murray says the Hawks are building something special! Next year barring injuries, could be our best since 1987. Keep that defense improving, and we will be fine!

Could be. Unfortunately things never seem to go exactly as planned. See this season as a prime example. Lets just enjoy this years fighting Hawkeyes......

If the new big isn't BIG ready I hope Fran red shirts him for a year to help him be a bigger impact once he is really needed. This means JN becomes a back-up center to Garza and takes on RKs current role. Connor starting at the 4 has transformed this team, in a very good way, from when Nunge was starting at the 4.

I agree.

The offense has been really good for all but maybe one year (his first) since Fran got here. It's been top 20-25 four or five times and top 5 a couple of times. It's going to be really hard to improve it enough to be off the charts.

I'll be happy with a repeat of the offense from the last 3-4 years and improvement on the other end. That could put Iowa in the elite category overall.

Must be new here. Long-time Iowa hoops fans are used to Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown. From Pembrooke Burrows to the Ronnie Lester injury to the Elite 8 game against UNLV to the NCAA loss to Toledo (1979, look up how that game ended. A shot that hits back iron, goes in the air, falls in) to the 2005-06 losing to Northwestern (on the miracle Michael Jenkins shot) to Northwestern State in the NCAA tournament. I could go on. And that doesn't even go into Chris Street.

Seriously, us long-time fans have been so scarred by watching the opponent shot at the end always going in, we are all in the believe it when we see it mode. That's why I'm enjoying this year's team immensely. They play hard, play together and are fun to watch. I'll take that as a win.

We seem to have gotten a steal with Perkins haven't we?!

No we have the worst recruiting coach ever, with the worst class ever!

This is what we have been told. Meanwhile, it appears this class will be very good with possibly 1 to 2 exceptional players and in my opinion Perkins was the weakest member in the class, and that it appears completely wrong, as he is likely the best as of today.

Exactly, if they could get their defense to top 50 (top 40 is probably hoping for too much) Iowa would likely be a top 10 team.

If and a big if, we are healthy and everybody comes back that is suppose to come back, we are a top 15 team, borderline top 10 with a chance at the Final 4, defense be damned! And I agree w/the OP that this could definitely be our best team since 87. Obviously things have to go our way, but less and less dominant teams, tons of parity as evidenced by this season, and I don't see that changing.

Not a knock on Nunge but I'm talking our current starters. Kreiner has actually been pretty darn solid off the bench this season and just gives us toughness. At this point in his career, I have no idea what kind of player Nunge even is going to be. Like others have said, I really like our 4 guard lineup and 1 big. If he's healthy and can come back and even give us Kreiner minutes that would be nothing but a plus.

Have we really seen Nunge at all yet to judge his effectiveness?
I’d like to see a full (or at least most of a) season of Nunge before making any determinations regarding how he can help, or not, going forward. I have little doubt that he has the skills to be a big time contributor. It’s easy to say that he’s legit based upon things he’s done in practice. It’s just as easy to say that he sucks based upon his limited game time, when he has a quarter of a season completed in the last two years.

We have seen Pemsl begin to settle into a role where he can at least contribute off the bench, though it has taken some time for him to figure it out. It’s quite the transition going from practicing with the team for two years to trying to find your place when going up against different looks and different players. Hopefully he can figure it out, but not ready to write him off yet

This. Connor’s too good at defense at the 4. Nunge has lost his starting spot & needs to focus on spelling Garza for moments next year.

Nunge will get his shot to be the man when he’s a jr.

He has to learn to be a more aggressive player, right now he seems passive. I thought that year one and I thought the same thing when he was playing this season. To me it is a mentality thing and I just don't know if that mentality changes in year 4 (hard to believe) of his Iowa career.

Right. If he plays well enough that means Joe can get some minutes at the 3/4 as well as Connor bc you will have JoBo and JT at the point (and an extra PG to spare). That means CF and TP at the 2 with TP maybe getting a little time at the 3.

You're describing the curse. Its part politics and dishonest officiating and part horrific, improbable events.

If something terrible can derail us, it will. It could be some mysterious career destroying injury. It could be a phantom foul call. It could be a dog shit team, like say Nebraska, getting a gambling crew the night Iowa shoots 3-22 from 3.

It could be something idiotic like suspending a player that was on a probation so secret the player and coach didn't know about it. It cold be some guy no one's heard of dropping 20 off the bench. A 45% FT shooter going 10-10 against Iowa.

When it comes to Iowa basketball, disaster will find a way.

But these kids are very fun and busting their asses.

I wouldn't put any stock in whether the NCAA will give Nunge a 6th year. If they don't he will be a junior starting this fall...

If Luka and Wieskamp return I could see Fran redshirting 2 or more of the incoming freshman that will be on campus starting in the fall.
With the possible return of Patrick, as already a redshirt freshman, that's 6 too many.
As Fran is finding out, a short bench is better then a full bench, trying to make everyone happy is not necessary the key to making a team better.

Any new videos or info on Perkins?? He's quite the athlete. If he can have a well rounded game, he could be the steal of the class

Like I said I haven’t seen anything from Nunge.

Nobody has,.. Played first season out of position at the four, red shirted his second season, and then sidelined after five games into this third season,... Jack will get a chance to take over for Kreiner next season, and it's the position that best suits him.

Hell's bells, I almost completely forgot about Patrick. Having said that I think you need to get TP ready to go so he should play next season (provided he isn't a mess which I don't expect) but I could see giving a RS to the new big JO and pg AU.

When Garza is done it would be nice to land another athletic 4 like we had with Cook. Right now Garza needs the space so offensively it is good not having an extra guy bringing extra traffic into the lane. Hell Fran should be able to recruit bigs with this selling point, four wing set with your chance to dominate the paint and get lots of opportunities and buckets.

What's really interesting is that KenPom has us up to 74th in DEff, and we're up to 15th overall in his ratings. It really won't take much more to move up to that territory.

Yeah Maryland and NW having really poor shooting nights seemed to have given the Hawks a bump in DEff. I read somewhere the KemPom is predicting that Michigan will score less than 80 tomorrow night. Fingers crossed!
