Offensive Line

LeGrand is on the two deeps as LG#2, so I imagine he can play guard. I was surprised Welsh wasn't at C, but he was dinged (ankle) and missed big chunks of the game.

Rewatching the game right now.

The offensive line looks great. In Sync, Dominating....really proud of these guys.

Brian Ferentz is doing a hell of a job.

That's why in the second half we took one entire series without a running back? Because the o line didn't need any work on pass protect right? They're fine, and they're going to be more than fine, but they're preparing for the third game, and they have a ways to go.

Nice observations .... Daniels out and Welsh out for around half the game (maybe more). That means that Iowa's OL was down their top 2 O-linemen ... and our OL still dominated in that game!

Part of that is attributable to the fact that the guys have been working hard and pushing their development forward, part of that is coaching - getting them technically sound, and, lastly, part of that is due to the fact that ISU is just plain bad.

The level of difficulty will continue to rise ... while the guys deserve to pat themselves on the back a little bit ... they're going to need to continue to improve. North Dakota State is not going to let them push them around like Iowa State did. Wisconsin most certainly won't ... nor will Michigan. They need to keep on working towards incremental improvement. If they do ... we might have a fighting chance to win in our tough games ... maybe even more than a chance!

My vibe there is that the coaches wanted to achieve a number of objectives:

1. It was a nice challenge for the OL to protect ... when it was obvious that we were going to pass the ball.

2. We need to continue to bring along our WRs who are NOT named Meerkat (VandeBerg). Going empty allowed for us to get more WRs on the field at the same time. The more live, quality reps they get ... the better.

3. It also gives opposing Ds more to have to prepare for. Opposing Ds will look at the personnel ... and realize that we'll be willing to go empty from it too. That will give some Ds more pause and potentially alter how they call things against us. For example, a D might be willing to stack the box against us ... however, if they know that we can go empty with that same personnel, then that forces them to play coverage a little more often.

They were fine against a terrible isu team. But, I am hoping Daniels is back soon and stays healthy at center. Not too many teams can say they have an athletic center. But when Daniels is healthy, he's one of them.

I think the OL will be top 20 in the country this year and could be top 10. However they have yet to be tested. ISU looks bad bad like really bad right now like they would be a .500 team at the FCS level bad. N Dakota St does some nice things to try and break an opposing OL but their D this year is in a big rebuilding mode. The Hawks OL won't get a true test fo awhile this season. That will be good for CJ and his health but I really want to see how this OL has improved in pass protection. I knew coming in the shuffle on OL would help greatly with run blocking but not yet sure on pass protection.

I think it's great that Iowa has what appears to be pretty good depth at least in the inside three positions. I am still going to wait before I anoint our tackles as being great. And if one of them gets hurt I would be pretty concerned. But guard and Center I think we are stacked

This. He was on point from the start with some of the breakdowns, and then had a couple good one-liners in there as well.
For the most part I really like Matt Millen but I think he goes overboard a little bit with his praise of everybody all the time. But I guess I probably remember him ripping people more than other announcers might also. So maybe it offsets

  • Don't think he's tired, he's pissed but covering for his team's SH!tty play. I mean you stop to call out the blitz and it's still not picked up. Drew Tate would be in that guy's phase letting the whole stadium know about it. CJ is too laid back on it. This line better get their act together. They look like the JV squad.

Shouldn't Brian Ferentz shoulder some of the blame for the piss poor offensive line play?
