Officiating

It wasn’t good I agree but Iowa flat out didn’t guard the rock and stunk it up fair and square as much as it hurts to say .. mind boggling they can’t figure out a defense that is better then what they have now ..

you gotta expect the random game where refs will be responsible for 6-8 pt differential. Good teams don't let a guy like Johnson roam around 3pt line with no one stuck to him. Shading a zone over to his side is no solution. You gotta put a defender like Keegan on him.

We let 2 and a half guys beat us. Carr and Johnson got 56 and we let Liam get to the rim on pick and rolls, and garbage and a couple 3s for 18 points.

At one point in the second half, Iowa had 11 fouls and Minnesota had 4. You say Iowa doesn't play defense, isn't close enough to shooters, and yet you say the reffing was OK? Interesting logic.

Yes, Iowa STILL should have won the game, but if you're gonna rag on college athletes, why the hell give the adult refs--who actually get paid--a pass for doing a lousy job?

Fact: Iowa blew the game.

Fact: The refs were ridiculously favoring Minnesota despite the Gophers' much rougher play.

BTW: I didn't know Robbie Hummel and Dave Revsine were such great Minnesota boosters. They questioned almost every foul call against Minny in the second half while ignoring blatant missed calls against Iowa. Hell, Robbie even questioned why Minny was whistled for a foul when they bloodied CJ's lip! C'mon, man. Do you really think Garza misses all those chippies because he's NOT getting fouled in the double and triple teaming? 😣

Robbins is big and when Nunge is not in there, it basically means it's short people trying to defend a 6'9+ forward rolling hard to the basket.

Not to mention the fact that Iowa's help defense is lazy as f*** save for the occasional token possession so they can say "hey look at us playing defense! You guys should totally stop complaining because we played defense on that possession. Right?".......

I think we might have 1, maybe 2 actual legitimate charges taken so far this year, which would've been against one of the scrub teams at the start of the year. (If I missed some, let me know, people......)

JBo needed the ball in his hands the last minute. The only time he would have really been useful all night. Ice from free throw line.

I thought throughout the game the officiating was terrible; but actually they were very solid at the end when Iowa gave the game away

Robbins is about 7'1" I think. He looked taller then Luka. I still can't understand why Fran has Luka hedge or switch on screens 25 ft from the basket and we end up with Jbo trying to guard Robbins. Its almost comical.......

Career game aside for Charles Buggs or Jerry Hester or whoever it was tonight.

The officiating was terrible. Garza was mugged most of the game, and how is Carr not called for the step back three?

If Luka is going to try and get shots up against double teams all year hes going to be playing through a ton of contact.

He needs to figure out theres an easier way.

I see this on here all the time, 2 things can be true at the same time. Officials didn’t cost iowa the game, officiating was bad. Both true. One play that sticks out, not even sure when it happened, JoeT jumped in front of ball handler clear extension of the arm from ball handler and block on JoeT. That shit makes me shake my head, its so blatantly the wrong call

What else are you going to do in man defense though?

You can't just let the ball defender get picked with no help at the 3pt line.

Playing man with Garza is just not a good option no matter what and when you mix in JBO as the guy getting screened its not workable no matter what you do.

I get it, just talking out loud basically. It was just so frustrating watching Luka pop out to pick the guy up and seeing their post player under the basket all alone or with JBo trying to hold on to the guys waist basically.

Its dammed if you do or don't.

Its impossible to hide both of them at the same time.

JBO has to be hitting 3s, otherwise its hard to justify him being out there.

Happen all the time. I keep shaking my head saying "why?" I would run that against Iowa EVERY time down court.

I remember that as well. Carr gave him a forearm to the chest. Also the block on Luka. He was outside the charge/block arc, and Robbins left his feet and jumped at Luka's chest from several feet away. Luka did leave his feet, (barely as he doesn't get off the ground much), but he went straight up. Clearly Robbins jumped INTO Luka and Hummel pointed this out, but they still called the block. Supposedly the defender has a right to the vertical area above himself, but they often don't call it that way.
I'm not advocating the officials cost Iowa the game. They lost it at the free throw line, and by their usual inattentive defense, but non the less.....

Unfortunately I agree. I had hoped he'd really have a special year, he's put alot out there for the program and he's a HAWK. It doesn't seem that the surgeries have helped his lateral quickness. Frankly he just isn't the same level of athlete as high level point guards like Carr, and this makes him a liability on defense unless the rest of the team is elite, and they are not. It would be interesting if Fran would start rotating Joe T and Ulis at the point and spot Jbo at the two guard for short stretches, but I think we know thats not going to happen. As you said if we have Jbo and Luka in the game, the other three guys have to be super at help side defense, and then we still would be giving up to many uncontested sideline three's .

While guarding Carr at top of the key, late second half

The officiating, as questionable as it was at times, is not the reason Iowa lost.....

This, however, should be reviewed by the dean of officials as to how the ref saw 'block' here instead of 'charge'.

Bohannon called for a foul and ‘an one’ after not even touching the guy was a good one.

Agreed. It was a bad call.

But they call it more times than not. And JBo knows that because he's been called for it quite a few times over the last few years.

Well that play did result in 2 free throws in regulation for Minny so in essence it did lose the game for Iowa. Point is, teams can play bad and still lose because of officiating. I’ve seen my share of Iowa games that resulted in losses because of officiating. The Minnesota loss when the Minny player was stepping out of bounds while calling TO that kept us out of the dance, and the MSU fiasco that kept us from winning the B1G tournament.

JBOs minutes have got to be cut down until he starts making 3s consistently.

I think its pretty much that simple.

a bad call with 8 minutes left can not lose you the game . we did blow a 7 pt lead in 44 seconds .

You often say things I don't agree with but this is a solid dissection of the game last night.
Well done.
