It was a near-perfect week for Iowa sports last week. The Hawks scored victories in field hockey, cross country, soccer, and volleyball last week, not to mention football's opening week win. Hawkeye Field Hockey, now a perfect 4-0, picked up two more shutout wins this week, led by two more multi-goal games from freshman phenom Dionne van Aalsum. The Hawks downed Fairfield (2-1) and #19 Albany (1-2) with matching 3-0 wins.

Iowa Field Hockey has long been a powerhouse, but this week they claimed the #1 national ranking for just the second time in program history. The Hawks have a stout defense and with the addition of a potent scorer like van Aalsum, they look poised for a big year.

Elsewhere, Iowa men's cross country set a school record in the 6K, with Max Murphy blowing past the old school record by almost 13 seconds as he took home the win at the Hawkeye Invitational (17.57.3). The men's team took first in the event, while the women's team put together a strong performance of their own to finish second. Iowa soccer picked up two more wins last week, shutting out Mississippi State 1-0 and Southeast Missouri State 4-0. The Hawks are now 5-0 on the year. Hawkeye volleyball improved to 4-2 with three wins over the weekend, a straight-set win over Middle Tennessee State, a five-set thriller over Kent State, and a convincing three-set win over South Dakota State.
