On Line Voting

What's your take on online voting?

  • Good idea but I'm in no hurry to get it up and running.

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • OK for some, but I'd rather vote the old fashioned way even if/when online voting is available.

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • I don't like it. Let's fix what we have before spending a dime on online voting.

    Votes: 0 0.0%

We bank on line, we trade stocks on line, we gamble on line, we share our medical records on line, we pay bills on line, and so much more. We have online encryption. We have blockchain. We have multi-factor verification.

Why can't we vote on line?

As it turns out, some people can vote on line. And not just in other countries. But most Americans can't.

This cutie explains some of the pitfalls. And yes, wood.

I could settle for touchscreen electronic balloting at this point. Filling in bubbles is so archaic
Too error prone and glitchy. Because you're going to have thousands of them, that means there will be ones out there screwing up on election day.
A machine readable paper ballot is a recountable record.
You don't know what happens underneath when you touch a screen.

You want Russian internet bots voting in our elections?
The only negative I can think of for online voting is hearing all the insane conspiracy theories from your side of the aisle. If it weren't for Rs we probably would have online voting from the comfort of our couch by now. Rs ruin everything.

It would be really easy to send a "receipt" to the voter before hitting submit. That way there is evidence to count if needed.

As I keep saying, of everything we do, voting should be the easiest. Anything that makes it harder is, by definition, voter suppression.

How do you envision those receipts being utilized in a recount?
There are places that have a touch screen create a machine readable ballot, but can you tell if the QR code (what matters to the machine) registers a vote for Biden?

I think it would put ballot harvesting on steroids.

Yep. And there’s no reason to believe the fraud in the election system would be any less than in the rest of our day-to-day existence.

In 2023, Americans lost over $12.5 billion to online fraud, according to the FBI's annual Internet Crime Report. The number of cybercrime incidents, including online fraud, has also increased significantly in the past few years, from around 467,000 in 2019 to more than 880,000 in 2023.

Somewhere between fix what we have first and terrible idea. I could see facial recognition or fingerprinting being feasible with online voting, which COULD be more secure than anything we have now if everyone is properly registered (with face/fingerprint).

They have the technology in airports to clear customs...could it go on your phone as well? Could it also speed customs/border entry?

So it's not a terrible idea long term, if done correctly.
