I went to Tucson for the first round in March '87. We beat Santa Clara then UTEP played Lute's Arizona team. We were rooting for UTEP of course as we had already won and didn't want to play Arizona on their home court with their loser/obnoxious fans. ( Yeah the #2 seed ( Iowa ), was lined up to play the #9 seed on their home court....)
It looked like Lute had it in the bag with under 2 minutes to go and a 9 point lead, working the 4 corner offense, still had the 45 second shot clock, but Jeep Jackson caught fire and UTEP somehow tied up the game in regulation. UTEP had fouled out 3 starters and one bench guy, yet outscored Arizona 19-12 in OT to knock them out. Booing, obnoxious loser fans, despite the refs whistling UTEP for 34 fouls to Arizona's 22. Arizona had Sean Elliot and James Lofton ( who mostly played MLB for Cleveland ), Steve Kerr missed most of the season with a knee injury. UTEP's Tim Hardaway was just a freshman and Jeep Jackson would die over the summer of an undiagnosed heart condition...
