One thing to ponder...

Yep -- pretty much a freshman in name only. He has the age, physical maturity, and wrestling experience of a redshirt sophomore or true junior. Whatever the case, he's a phenomenal talent, and he won fair and square. Congrats to him.

Compare that to accomplishments by Snyder who is still 21. Or J'den Cox who is 22. Pretty sure Dake was 22 when he won title #4. Not sure on the normal age of a true freshman. I have a sophomore in college that is 19 years old.

Normal is 18-19 yrs old. Halls "true freshman" is tongue n cheek to most hardcore wrestling fans. Beyond that he's really special.

Im already looking forward to his graduation and advancing to senior level:rolleyes:

I believe he turned 20 in January. Age is only relevant if your trying to make the point that being a true freshman champ is a big deal.

if its to diminish his abilities, that doesnt hold much water.

but when he is 23-24 (w a Rs) and beating 18-19 yo well then that is something that message boards were created for.

That is nothing. Zain Retherford is only 21 years old and he beat Lavion Mayes who turned 47 years old this year. Great coaching job by Cael to overcome all that experience.
lol my buddy and I were saying the same thing last night, his picture on the big screen made him look 40

Kid is a stud regardless of age but his comments did ring a little hollow when commenting about wrestling against a grown man and sounding like he was just a little guy barely out of HS. He just finished 7 years of HS wrestling winning 6 titles.

In a few years I will cheer for him when he is on team USA going for an olympic gold medal. Until then he will be just another Penn State wrestler like Frank the Tank....

Again respect does not equal to Like....

Hall was held back in middle school to get him the chance to be a 6 time champ.

How do you hold a kid back? If he flunks, sure, but then he wouldn't be eligible to compete. Would he? You can just have your kid repeat grades if it suits his athletic goals?

Won fair and square? His finals match was the most controversial out of all of them this year. The ref robbed Bo of a takedown early in the match on the review. There is simply no way that isn't a takedown. And then the lack of a stalling call at the end of the match. The argument for not calling stalling on him, I can at least understand, but it was undoubtedly a takedown earlier in the match for Bo Jordan.

Definitely wouldn't call it fair and square. He won and wrestled well, but it was not a conclusive victory by any stretch of the imagination.

Far more prevalent than you would like to believe. Watched it in Iowa, more of starting the child later. Hall did it in moving from Kentucky to Minnesota

It was Kansas but you are correct. It was done when they moved to MN

Hall is from Davison, Michigan. He and his dad moved to Kentucky because they allow 7th graders to wrestle varsity. He was a state runner up at 130 lbs. (I think) in Kentucky. After the season they moved back to Michigan. They did some research and Minnesota has a later start date so Mark could move there and wrestle as a 7th grader for the second year in a row and won 6 consecutive state titles for Apple Valley.

You can, and very many do. Bergen Catholic in NJ has built a powerhouse by recruiting from all over, and at this point most of their wrestlers (including Suriano) have been held back. I believe in NJ as long as you turn 19 after October 1 you are eligible to participate in sports; so the top athletes are held back as long as possible while remaining eligibile for their Senior year.

True -- it was a controversial match. That wasn't what I was talking about. I was referring to the age thing -- that he may be quite old for his class, but that this isn't against any rules, etc. Wasn't referring at all to the details of the match, so my choice of words could have been better.

Good post. I sometimes look at kids that are old freshman in college or old seniors in high school for that matter, and think it's a crock that they are that much older than people of their same class

I do think it's important to realize that when these kids are held back(aka "redshirted in middle school")it's almost always the decision of the parents and not the kids themselves

Is it right? No. But it's not always the athletes faults, but rather that of an often misdirected parent.

I see it in all sports girls and boys.

I personally knew 2 people that didnt not graduate their senior year to wrestle again after failing to win state

Did not see the interview. However, if Mark was selling the babe in the woods routine, I'd wager that he has more mat and big match experience than BoJo who has wrestled one freestyle tournament in high school and college. By a long shot.

Mark Hall 20 year old true freshman defeated 21 year old redshirt junior Bo Jordan last night.

This coversation might be awkward for you when Gavin Teasdale arrives on campus. He's about three months older than Hall relative to grade level. If he redshirts as a freshman, he'll turn 21 a few weeks before he wrestles his first official college match. (Hall, by contrast, was 19 when he won the Southern Scuffle title.)

It wasn't Halls age alone that prompted the thread, it was that in his post match interview he made the comments to the fact of being a lowly freshmen wrestling a grown man, when they are only 1 year and some change apart in age.

Maybe he was speaking from a maturity standpoint?

Cory Clark is 23 going to be 24 in May, only a few months younger than Hall would be if he redshirts.

Many of Iowa's guys will be 23+ when they graduate after a redshirt.

Graduating college at 21 is very rare these days.

Didn't realize they were so close in age

They are not. The OP had to lie on the numbers to make his point. Hall is one year behind. Pico was the same. Pretty common in college sports. Let me know when Iowa stops offering those kids.

As one other parent told me, it is called the redshirt kindergarten year to ensure a 19 year old senior. It happens across all sports now.

I was young for my class, didn't turn 18 until the Sept after graduation. I gained almost 20 lbs 18-19 versus the 15 I gained all through 9th-12th grade. Guess my testes were late droppers.
