OT: Change NBA logo to Kobe Bryant

He cheated on his wife every chance he could (as far as I understand it).

Oh, & there’s also the whole sexual assault thing in Edwards, CO.

I think he ratted out Shaq for cheating on his wife & caused his divorce.

Just because somebody dies does not erase everything & make them a good human being imo.
I did think it was strange how the last week all the focus has been on what a great family man Kobe was. People remember what they want I guess. Reminds me of all the fans in KC who wanted so hard to paint D Thomas as some kind of great guy when he died after his SUV flipped over on the way to KCI. In real life the guy was one of the worst dead beat dads around right up there with Shawn Kemp, and offered no financial support to his over a half dozen illigitmate kids or their baby mamas. Despite making millions he passed with his estate so broke his family tried to sue GM for his accident so there would be some money for them. Of course the fact he was driving 85 miles an hour on an icy winter road, in a SUV that he had altered to void its warrenty was supposed to be overlooked. Now we have young Mr Bryant who chose to have his helo flying in extremely bad weather which caused the LAPD to ground all their police choppers for safety reasons. Both guys were GREAT athletes, but they were not heros. Just guys who were more talented then most with many of the same weaknesses and some worse then the rest of us.

You don't need to be a great person to be celebrated.

Just need to be great at sports, acting, music etc. :(

I understand that Kobe is no choir boy. He made mistakes and I am not lessening them. You also see the impact he had on a lot of people's lives. I am not whitewashing anything but he did seem to be a good father who was active in his daughter's life. He had a big impact on the nba and we are talking about the nba logo, not adding him to Mt Rushmore. If the nba wants to do this and the players are already changing their numbers then that is their choice. Our society has elected two out of the last four presidents that have had considerable allegations against them. The chances are that a lot of people voted for one or the other so some of the high attitudes are interesting.

So what was the alternative in the election? Don't participate? Hope that at least whomever we elect will be someone who grows the economy? Quite frankly the last election was the worst choice I've ever seen as far as who to vote for, with no real clear and appealing options. More like hold your nose and hope for the best. As for the NBA logo, don't really care. They'll do what they want, and it won't effect me either way. Just pointing out that all this great guy stuff is ALL relative, and much of it is totally unwarrented. Pro and college sports are great diversions, but the large majority of the participants are not people who should be idolized for anything more then their ability to entertain. Period.....

People overreact when something bad happens. They want to change things or make up new laws. Things like this is rare, no needs to change a bunch of things cause of it.

The NBA logo should change regardless of whether it becomes Kobe, somebody else, or a generic image. It’s become outdated, even if short shorts are making a comeback

I shouldn't have brought politics into this but thought maybe using both sides was ok. Everyone should vote their conscious and can vote however they want. However, do not ever defend or someone behavior base upon party but whether that behavior is acceptable. If people rip on Kobe who have defended other assaulters then that is on them. Kobe was accused of a very serious crime and it ended up dropping and being settled in a civil suit. Other than that, he seemed to be clean and earned respect from a lot of people who had been critical of him.

I probably take this a little personal because I was always a Lakers fan and respected the hell out of his work ethic and will to win. But seeing the younger NBA players and how they responded to Kobe shoes an admiration that I didn't know was there. Kobe seemed to touch a lot of people and seemed to change how he lived his life. I don't know if that attones for earlier behavior but seems to have meant a lot to a lot of people.

Kobe makes a lot of sense. He is an icon to the current generation - so he would update the logo. He's now frozen in time. He'll never get older. Never have a DUI. Never get caught saying something stupid. Never create a branding issue. Jerry West wants it changed and now would be a good opportunity to change it where you would have the least amount of backlash that other players deserve it more. And it is a good way to immortalize a guy for whom basketball meant everything.

His game ties together the modern NBA with the old.
Nope, sorry...with Kobe’s rape incident, he doesn’t deserve to be the logo.

Haha putting the fade away that looks exactly like Jordans fade away as the poster would be kinda funny.

Such a in the moment reaction though. What if Jordan died...what kind of reaction would be having now?

I’m a branding/design guy, I helped with branding of WNBA and G League. Changing the logo to Kobe, turning a complex human being into a singular stylized graphic, is debatable as a poor way of honoring him.

And it makes the league about Kobe, which, over time, will not be good.

We know the current logo is Jerry West, but only because we’ve been told. The change of direction West is captured doing is entirely ubiquitous during the course of any game.

Nobody ever mistakes the current logo as representing Jerry West over the NBA. And that’s why it remains a working mark.

That makes sense. I see no reason why the NBA shouldn’t start doing temporary alt logos, though. A Kobe one could be used for awhile to start the program, and for HOF inductions etc. they could do it for other players for a day or so.

It's tricky. And expensive. And to use a player's likeness these days, well, surprise surprise—there is going to be a cost.

Take the WNBA. As we worked on the WNBA's rebrand back starting in 2012/2013 we aggregated bits and pieces from different players to form the silhouette. To make it recognizable as any specific player makes the mark about that player—and this consideration becomes imminently more of a consideration when we're talking about the recognizability of NBA players (versus WNBA players).

The NBA does a phenomenal job with its branding. It's being consistent at the NBA level allows the teams to remain at the fore. If the NBA starts playing around with its branding, suddenly it starts to compete with its teams.

At the team level is where the fun is. The alt logos, the heritage marks and graphics and jerseys, and now the stuff you see with some franchises having jerseys that rep a particular neighborhood or sort of grassroots city "brand".

Do you think it was Kobe who said it was ok to fly?
Yes, I do think it was Kobe. I'm pretty sure its his helo, and the pilot works for him. I know for a fact that the LAPD grounded all their helo's because of the fog, and very poor visability. They should never have been in the air. Unfortunately, there were numerous other fatalities, and at least two of his daughters team mates. I would imagine there will be some lawsuits before this is over.
