OT: Cuonzo Martin to Mizzou

So much for Illinois, border war may intensify if Illinois wanted to interview him.

This pleases me as a Tiger. I don't think he is a great game coach by any means, but he can recruit and that's about all it takes at Mizzou. As a Hawkeye FIRST and FOREMOST, I'm afraid this is bad for Fran's trying to recruit St. Louis.

Missouri has hired poorly lately and is a mess right now. Hiring Martin was a good move in more than 1 way.

It can only get better there.

Was Quin Snyder not a good recruiter?

No more Tyler Cooks...we probably got a little lucky on pulling him in.

Also glad he didn't go to Illannoy. I wonder if he is getting out before someone wonders how he has recruited so well at Berkley.

I heard 7 years for 21 million. That seems like quite a bit for the resume he has. Fran doesn't make remotely close to that. That would be the part that bothers me. I want Fran and his style of play at least until both his sons can graduate college.
Fran is our man!

Too late. When he hired an ex-Louisville assistant my alarm bells went off.

I am curious to see if Charlie Moore comes with him.

One of the Illinois sites said they're mulling a 4.8 million/year deal to Tony Bennett

Martin did get a seven year contract, but given his history, he is probably gone after three.
Cuonzo took the Cal job because it was open and he wanted to shove it down the throat of the Vols fan base. They rode him and wanted him out and Bruce Pearl back, and then he directed the Vols to the Sweet 16 and bolted to Cal. That was the Vols team that beat Iowa in the play in game. He recruited some studs to Cal; however, as someone else mentioned the guy is not much of a game day coach. He will have Mizzou back on the map again. Furthermore, he is a St. Louis native.

Reportedly is hiring Michael Porter's dad as an assistant. Porter didn't sign an LOI with Washington and their coach just got fired. Unbelievable.

That was fast. Guy bounces around a lot.

Just what I was going to say also hiring the dad of the number 1 recruit in the country makes no sense unless it's for one year he's hired for, they are a terrible basketball team a guy who is one and done isn't helping you next year also maybe hire the dad of the number 1 recruit now that is 2-3 years away from college because it's going to take Missouri atleast 3 years to be good again.

Coaches that are doing this it hasn't helped them but actually hurt them also unless you have a bunch of NBA guys on the roster the one and done players don't help you, ask LSU (I know Simmons dad wasn't hired) and Washington. Both those coaches are fired now too if you don't succeed with that player you get fired.

This guy has underachieved every season he has coached how is he getting 7 year/21 million. Cal had so much talent this year, they should have been a tourney team.

Something about this guy i have never liked think he's a bad coach too great recruiter though.

I would rather watch McCaffreys style of ball, but Bennett would most likely rack up wins in talent rich Illinois. The Illinois/Wisconsin games would be something.

Porter Sr has two sons that will be following him to Mizzu.. Jontay is a 4 star (Rivals ranking) PF prospect. Rivals has him as a top 50 recruit.

I would take Porter in a heartbeat. For a team like Missouri, he would make a huge difference.

I sure hope they don't succeed. Bennett would be in my top few choices in all of college BB.

Ugh... That's all this league needs is Bennett 'boring' ball filled with grabbing, mugging and holding. First one to 45 points wins! That would be a huge waste of Illinois talent even if it wins games.

I didn't say that I prefer watching slow-down, grind-it-out basketball, but Bennett is a winner. I prefer watching Illannoy lose games they should win.

I hope Virginia matches any offer the Illini make. Other than the green stuff I'm not sure Illinois could be all that attractive. Their forays into the Chicago area for recruiting don't carry the weight they once did.

I'm hoping for the Illini version of a Lickliter hire.

Well for Iowa's sake we should all hope that Bennett stays put. Illinois is a sleeping giant- especially in the Chicago area. In addition, Cuonzo Martin will have a major impact on Iowa's recruiting in the St. Louis area.

I don't think Martin's program will be chasing the players that Iowa is after. And other than Cook, who have we brought in to even say we've had an impact in the St. Louis Area?

So are you saying that Cuonzo sets his sights on recruiting better players than Fran? Martin has been able to recruit NBA level players at both Tennessee and Cal.

I'm saying Martin has resources that Iowa frowns upon.

By the way, I notice that sometimes the questions I ask don't get answered. So, again, other than Cook WHAT Missouri pipeline!?!? o_O And do you really think Martin being closer to Iowa makes a big difference?
