OT: Dumbest play I've seen this year (Rutgers vs Michigan last night)

Are these refs not communicating with the players? During the Iowa/Purdue game the refs just hand the ball to the FT shooter without letting the other players get in position?? I am sorry but you as an official have to vocally say, "Anyone want in." These guys lately I just notice just hold up the number of shots and move back. There has to be some communication between the refs and the players.

But this play was odd, because it was a 1-1 and no Michigan players were around? Most of the time there is at least 1 opposing player in there to rebound in case of a miss.

Even though I understand your points completely, these guys are not 5th graders learning the game. Take some damn ownership and care about the situation, so you KNOW what to do when the ball goes up. Sure, they are a bad team down 8 with 45 seconds to go, but why are you on the court if you don't care?

This play actually reminds me of cases where one team removes all their players from the lane on a free throw late in a game, the player shoots the ball, and get his own rebound against 4 guys! "I've got the shooter" is not that hard for someone on the team to say, and then block out the damn free throw shooter!

TBF it doesn't look like the ref on the 3 point line knew nor did Irvin. I'm guessing the refs didn't have the best communication on the play. Still can't happen though.

No i get what your saying, these guys have to know the situation and what not. But the official at the 3pt line just stands there? The shooter didn't even know? How do you not know whether its a 1-1 or a 2 shot foul situation. Normally the official is in the lane communicating to the guys, "live on the first." That is more my point.

I have seen recently some "bad mechanics" in some of the elite officials in basketball. This is about the time of year where some of them get "lazy" and issues like this one creep up. The Iowa vs Purdue situation was odd, because I am sure most of the Purdue guys were still moving and that's why Utoff ran in there (Gessell already had the ball). A good official wouldn't allow that to happen, by communicating with both the players and his crew.

Still doesn't beat the time Iowa was playing Illinois (15-20 years ago?) and one of our players was shooting a 1-1. Missed the shot, the Illini player gets the defensive rebound.....and proceeds to shoot a routine layup in our basket giving us 2 points.

D'oh!

Saw that happen this past weekend in a AAU tournament. My nephews team (haven't won a game all year) was playing and they were in the lead by 2 points in the 2nd half. The opposing player #12 is shooting 2 free throws. He makes the first one and then misses the 2nd one and my nephews teammate rebounded the ball and put it back up for 2pts for the other team. They ended up losing the game by 1. I felt bad for the kid, but they all were laughing about it.

Love these stories.

My son's team had a kid that could barely catch a chest pass, back in about 6th grade (it wasn't travelling hoops - city league). The other team missed a free throw and my son's teammate grabbed the defensive rebound and tried to make a shot for the other team. Everyone else but one other of my son's teammates had already started down the court after the missed free throw so it was only these 2 teammates. The kid misses the put back, and gets his own rebound. Then, he tried to make a shot AGAIN in the wrong basket and my son's other teammate BLOCKED HIS SHOT and ran up the court with the ball.

That ref at the top of the key then signals 1 shot, like there is going to be another FT attempt. Perhaps one of the refs messed up and indicated 2 shots and that's why the players thought it was 2 shots?

My buddy was kicked-off our junior high basketball team because he accepted a dare; when a player on the other team was preparing to shoot a free throw, my buddy rushed up from behind and pulled his gym shorts down to his ankles..... not exactly related to the thread topic but the video shook a distant memory.

Wasnt it Rutgers this year that had a chance to win a football game and was driving late, spiked it on 4th down? Couldnt believe it

The look on Rutgers coach's face/mannerism is great. I feel that way a time or two every day at work.
