It's my grandfathers 89 bday today! He lettered in both basketball and baseball at Iowa. Coached for 21 years at Dubuque Wahlert, 9 state tourney appearances, and 1 state title in 79-80'.

Curious if anyone out there played against those teams and had any memories to share?

Go Hawks!!

I believe he was a teammate of Iowa's Murray Weir. Eddie Colbert is suffering from major dementia. Great guy. Best Eddie Colbert quote ever was when Iowa Coach Ralph Miller "chewed him out" for not developing Kevin Kunnert more in high school. Kunnert didn't start for Wahlert until well into his senior year. Eddie said, "How the hell did I know he was going to grow eight inches in one year!"

Haha! Thanks for sharing. Not the first time I've heard that mentioned.

That was a great team

My brother played at Senior during that time with Wisco, Higgins and Rogan

My best friend is Wally Rogans nephew. Lots of late night discussions about those battles.

My dad went to Senior and loves talking about those teams as well. He always talked about how the crowds were insane at that time and how Rogan & Higgins would come out early hammering dunks down getting everyone rocking.. My experience at Senior was horrible. About the worst bball squad ever assembled in 99'.

My father, who passed away this year at age 93, knew your grandfather and always spoke very highly of him. My father considered him both a great athlete and coach.

That's because you chucked more shots than Antoine Walker and played worse defense.
Go Wahlert.
Make sure ol baldy gets cut next time you are back.

Kinda funny story.
They had a substate game vs bett at yourd gym in clinton.
Both teams bought either home/away jerseys. Instead of bitching about who was wrong colby suggested shirts/skins.
Then he got the clinton ad to let them use clintons uniforms.
Photos from the game were pretty funny.

Yes, grew up in IC. Coached in a few areas before moving to Dubuque. I believe Mason City was his first job coaching.
I am quite sure your GF grew up and ran with my father (Jake) and his younger brother (Phil). Did he go to St. Mary's or City High? My dad grew up in a house on Dodge. I think they raised a little hell together.

68- That's awesome. Pretty sure he went to St Mary's.

When I was in middle school in the mid 1960's I went with my dad to a Wahlert vs a Murray Weir coached Waterloo East basketball game. During pregame one of the East players shattered the glass backboard while dunking (very impressive to a middle school kid). It created about an hour delay while they installed a new board. My dad grew up in Muscatine and had a brother who played high school basketball with Weir so I got to go into the locker room with my dad where your grandfather, Murray Weir, and my dad talked while they fixed the backboard. I bet he just might remember the backboard being shattered

Know your Grandpa (have wondered about his health) and Jark, good guys!

Hi Bleeder,

Health wise, he's doing great. Unfortunately, years of dementia has taken a toll on him. He's not the same person in that aspect. Its pretty hard being around him (I live in Tampa and don't get back to Dub often) as he's kinda off in his own world and not that independent/outgoing person he once was. Getting great care though and my mom brings him Burger King Hamburgers & Fries that keep him pretty happy :)

Holy Family Maroons. Mason City, use to enjoy watching them play. Ask Ed if he remembers Herman Zerble?

I was there at that game. Growing up in Dubuque, where diversity was defined by being Irish irbGerman Catholics, watching the Waterloo East player jam the ball hard enough to scatter our backboard amazed me Thanks for the memory.

Damn! I was at that game, too. Went with my dad. I remember the grumbling from the crowd. Wasn't it a big black kid frim Waterloo Columbus who shattered the backboard? As I recall, it delayed the game over an hour. I was around 10 or 11 at the time.

Yes he coached at Holy Family High School in late 50's. His teams beat alot of other larger schools that he was not suppose to beat. I was at the public high school.

I was at that game also, I remember being so surprised that someone could jump up that high. Of course, we chose to boooooo him because none of our players could come even close to doing that. The Wahlert game were always sold out. A Catholic school with over 2,000 enrolled students. The gym was rocking for those games.
