Various discussions on Brett Bielema on here in recent weeks and while going through several back articles on the Rivals main site, I found this one that was interesting.

Brett is having a blast at Arkansas and to me the biggest reason he will likely not be Iowa's next coach, whenever that may be. However, what he has done to rejuvenate that fan base has been great to see. This is something we need here at Iowa--someone that can get the fan base very excited again. Lots of ways to do it, though no doubt winning is the #1 way.

He is act will grow old fast with a fanbase that is old school money if he doesn't produce wins. He is and probably always will be a big hit with players. The expectations at Arkansas are huge this year. If they fall short....look out....funny guy won't be so funny.

You mean his act growing old with a fan base like what has happened at Iowa? Sorry dude, I will put my money on Bielema having more success at Arkansas than Ferentz will at Iowa from this point on so be careful what you say about Bielema knowing what your until death do us part support of Ferentz is.

At least Arkansas has expectations this year.

Always funny how some in our fan base are all out all Iowa all the time, right down to their black and gold underwear they wear, yet love to rip on former Hawks once they leave here--even former Hawks who have a Tiger Hawk tatoo.

Awesome to see Brett having a great time and great seeing the awesome praise recently he had for his mentor in college, Hayden Fry. Love the guy and will root a lot for him.

You are something....I did not rip him one bit. He can coach football, but he is a clown at the same time. Knowing a little inside about the Arkansas money train....if he doesn't win soon his funny-guy act (that you love so much) will grow old. 2-6 in the SEC is not close...but for you I am sure it is as long as BB is doing it.

We know that you love you some BB and Hayden Fry and that you have angst for the current staff....we know, we know. Get you some pig-sooey and carry yourself down to Arkansas. You would fit right in.

hahah. I love how I grate at you and you can't do a thing about it.

Yeah, contrary to what you think, you did rip on Bielema.

The funny thing is: If Bielema were the coach at Iowa, you'd cream your jeans like nobody else's business and want to be his biggest fan.

Who cares if he's 2-6. Anyone who can't see the improvement on the field at Arkansas is a moron. That Arkansas team last year would have ripped through the Big Ten West

Hey now nobody needs to know what you would do if Bielema were the coach here. Contain your enthusiasm.

As a Hawkeye living in Arkansas I follow the Hogs much more closely than I did before B.B.'s arrival. I personally like his approach, He is honest with the media, He doesn't run from expectations, He is who he is and doesn't pretend to be something he thinks the fan/media/administration thinks he should be.
I have no idea if he would be interested in the Iowa job should it come open, I do think the brutality of the SEC west year in and year out could take it's toll on him. I just do believe the Hawks could do a lot worse then B.B. when the time comes for Iowa to find a new H.C.

And they could also do better.

Know first hand from a former all Big Ten player that Brett was respected, but ,not well like by many players. I was told he was unapproachable and not the fun loving guy dipicted in the article. This is not say there is anything against Brett's style, because I imagine that's a fairly common theme for most player/coach relationships.

That's big difference. He will probably have better Arkansas teams than Iowa but record wise may not show. Point and case here are 6 teams you face every year in sec west vs big 10 west.

Big 10- Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, northwestern, Illinois and Purdue.
SEC- Alabama, auburn, LSU, Ole miss, miss st and Texas a & m

Big key is what kind of record/expectations Arkansas fans will have for him. Will 8 wins be enough? Or need 9 or more?

If you haven't read this, you would be interested. Also, you doubter/haters should read it and consider how different it is at Arkansas than at Iowa.

My favorite comment in the article is to his seniors who haven't fared as well as they might have hoped...

“You’re a very special group in my heart for many reasons,” Bielema says, his voice cracking, then rising and growing stronger. “Your last home game here will be Senior Day. My goal is to make that the unhappiest day of your life — for all the right reasons.”

I would love it if they put heat on Bret. Anyone expecting to win at Arkansas is crazy.

If he came to Iowa he could own this creampuff division.

Meanwhile we are stuck with one of the most boring and unproductive products in college football. Were going to take a schedule tailor made for 10 wins and get 7 out of it. I don't even want to think about it.

I thought BB was a Big Dickhead when he was in the Big Ten. It seems like he's much happier since he left Wisconsin (and Alvarez?). I hope he's successful whether he ever returns to Iowa or not.

Being also a Hog fan, I am expecting 8 wins. Anything over that would be a bonus. Bielema is the type coach that opposing fans do not like and that is a good sign. Most of the offense is back, but some holes to fill on the defense. I really don't think Bielema will return to Iowa.

Mmmm....sounds like Arkansas is a great team to root for. You should totally go do that! :)

I disagree. BB had lots going for him at Wisconsin, and had no real reason to leave there - it was a surprise to most of the Badger fanbase.

IF BB had any notion of returning to coach at Iowa at any time in the future, he HAD to get out of Wisconsin (and out of the B10 completely), as he would not be able to assume a head coach position within the conference - pretty sure that's a written or unwritten no-no.

Thus, coaching in another conference is the only way he can keep the option open of returning to Iowa when Ferentz retires (and I do expect him to step down within 5 years here). BB has proven he can turn things around and has put proven winners on the field at UW, so Iowa could do a LOT worse when the Ferentz era ends.

I would love seeing Bielema coach again at Iowa, believe me.

However, I disagree with you on two parts:

1) I don't believe the #1 reason Brett left Madison was to better and more quickly position himself for the Iowa job one day.

Instead, it's been well documented Bielema left Madison because working for Barry Alvarez as a football coach there is difficult. Barry absolutely still wants his influence and Brett was a guy who is a "do it my way" sort of guy. In other words, Bielema felt micromanaged despite taking UW to three Rose Bowls in 7 years as head coach. Yes, Barry was caught a bit off guard, but those who know Bielema well were not shocked by his eventual leaving--they understood for some time how Bielema felt about things. Heck, Brett even sent Arkansas AD Jeff Long an e-mail shortly after the Bobby Pitrino episode (and over one full year before he was even hired for the job) and back handidly expressed his interest in the Arkansas job for the future. Brett WANTED the Arkansas job and wanted to give coaching in the SEC a chance (not saying the Iowa job would not be of great interest to him at some point).

2) Unless things turn quickly under Ferentz's direction, he won't be retiring at Iowa under his terms. Seems like you either feel Ferentz will determine when he leaves, or he deserves to stay as long as he feels, but you'd be wrong on both counts. Kirk stays as long as he wants and retires from Iowa IF the season ticket drain stops immediately and starts heading the other direction and the only thing that will cure that is W-I-N-N-I-N-G. If 2015 is not deemed a big success, Iowa could easily have a new head coach come 2016.

Would we have won 2 conference games last year with Arkansas schedule?

That could be one reason why BB doesn't succeed at Arkansas or live up to their expectations, the SEC West. Consistent elite programs in LSU, Auburn and Alabama. Texas A & M has been a top 25 program on since joining the SEC. And both ole miss and miss st programs are on the up swing coming off some of their best seasons in ages.

You can recruit top ten talent and still finish with 3 or 4 losses in that conference division.

Bielema will not have the success he did at Wisconsin but he is a good coach so they will be above .500 but I don't think they will ever win the division let alone the conference.

If Ferentz is gone after this year I think it will be hard to get him but if it is a couple years I think by that time Bielema will be willing to come because he has a better position at Iowa.
