Looked more like a football score

Kriener led with 25

Scores like this only mean you played a really dismal team. In the district game in DBQ, Wahlert led 35- 3 at the quarter over Independence, but it was a sloppy, horrible affair with a continuous clock and may have set basketball back forty years.

Did anyone see the story about the Nevada girls game that was 51-2 in the 2nd quarter, and ended 51-2 because there is a rule in Nevada that penalizes teams for winning by more than 50? Saw that on ABC News affiliate out of LA on Sunday (my Directv abc station). Lame.

Basically, the good team had to quit in order to not be penalized, because the other team was so bad. Here's an article:

If there’s one thing you can always rely on high school sports to provide, it’s hilarious box scores. Today’s gift comes to us from a girls basketball game in Cleveland, Ohio, between Gilmour High and Northeast Ohio College Prep.
So did Gilmour run up the score, or was the other team just that bad? Let’s see what Gilmour’s coach had to say (via Cleveland.com):

“Our intent was to not run anything up, and we took steps to not disrespect our opponent,” Gilmour coach Bob Beutel said. “They went 0-for-28 from the field and 1-for-4 from the free-throw line. We let them shoot.”

I remember a former coach of mine got in trouble in Iowa. He was coaching a JV team and they beat another school 99-6. They pressed until the lead got to 20 and then just played man to man the rest of the half. The half-time score was 49-2. The 2nd half they played a 2-3 (everyone bunched in the lane). They allowed them to shoot, just couldn't get anything to drop. Mind you this was before the 35pt rule was in effect. Also the other team only had like 6 players and two of them might of been freshman.

The coach was suspended by the AD at the time and then later asked to resign. He did nothing wrong, the other team was just that bad. The opposing coach even said he did nothing wrong, but the school ended up getting rid of him. Kind of made me wonder if someone at the school didnt' like him.

So now comes into question what are you supposed to do? I have seen instances where a team is up by a lot and they "hold" the ball and the losing team gets upset. Then you also have situations where a team is up by a lot and they are still trying to score (getting other kids who don't score as much) a shot, and they get upset.

I like the 35pt rule, but if the lead gets to 50, just end the game. No need to embarrass anyone.

What are you supposed to do in these situations?

Be interesting to see Kriener play against some good competition, which they will real soon.

Games like this are the time to let the end of the bench play very early, get younger players some experience, and let the score be what it is. The problem with state tournaments everywhere is that the number 1 seed has to start against the most hapless team in the district. What's really bad is football, where not only is the score often 60- 0, even with continuous clock, but there is a real danger of serious injury when teams are completely mis-matched in a contact sport. Power teams like Spirit Lake and Dubuque Wahlert, as stated above, will very quickly be playing much tougher competition as the tournament goes on. Next year, with all the top players on both teams gone to graduation, these two teams could find themselves on the opposite spectrum, getting whalloped by some 2017 power team in next year's tournament.
