OT: Land of Ten shutting down

Sad indeed. But it never gained traction as a “must hit” site. The model was flawed in that it was too segmented by schools. Was essentially 14 fan sites hosted in one hub. You need to cross-pollinate content across the conference and inspire debate between the passionate fan bases with that setup. The ESPN Big Ten Blog did that well back in Adam Rittenberg’s hay day. Every story was a chance for rival fans to engage in digital combat on the comments boards. There’d be threads on a Maryland football story with 50-100 comments, half which were about Jim Harbaugh somehow. Was must-see (TV?) for the B1G junky. Yet ESPN did away with it right about the time Land of 10 came out. Should’ve been a signal that there was something wrong with the model.

Sad. Sign of the times I suppose. Really enjoyed their coverage. Always a bummer to see less Hawk coverage.

While I made the Hawkeye portion of Land of Ten a regular daily stop, their material was rarely unique or breaking news. Turned into a site full of fluff: recruit background info and filler. I really like Dochterman’s work. Hope he keeps writing and posting.

Damn. I hope Dochterman lands on his feet.
Nothing against the guy.... contradicted one Twitter post he had and got blocked. Was 101% wrong and told him as much and he went 6th grade girl on me.

From a WI perspective, I thought the content and how it was presented was very good.
Scott and Jesse (Temple) will be missed. I hope they catch on with one of big-boys.

They were missing one non-content item that would have drawn readers across all fan bases together to the site on a daily and at times hourly basis that other sites do, and some do very well.

Wow. That was the only place that has ever covered Iowa sports the way I enjoy sports covered. This sucks,

I hope Dochterman goes back to the Gazette (or he and Morehouse branch out somewhere or something). Those two are a great 1-2 punch as writers in my opinion, but really shine on the On Iowa Podcast when they did it together.

I am afraid someone would have to retire at the Gazette to open up a position for Scott

Also, what do you guys think about Hawkeye Heaven, where they now have a web site, where amateurs are writing articles and they steal pics from the internet? I got turned off from Hawkeye Heaven once the guy started making it his own little profit center by selling ads

How could he be more than 100% wrong? Specificity please on your disagreement.

The Hawkeye Heaven guy?

He steals a lot of things...pictures, etc. Not sure about plagiarizing someone's written work, though.

I have checked out stuff he has written on the web site; its pretty bad. One advertiser on the site is where his wife apparently works. I don't see how his "web site" is gonna last. I think he thinks that his web site is gonna be the next Rivals since he has over 100,000 followers on facebook; all I can say is, "good luck with that."

Hawkeye Heaven is pretty legit

Any Details on this?
I checked into writing for them. Was told it would be great exposure. Wrote one piece for them and He put his name on it on the site. Went off on him and told him I was done. Got a super phony vibe from him.

i used to joke.. something new was posted on this site Hawkeye heaven would have it up 10 minutes later on Facebook.. and not give credit to the person who wrote it or got the info.. I’ll give them credit on the wave they pushed it to the fans but the fans and university are the ones that sold it.. none of the Hawkeye heaven super fans are season ticket holders, to help in the first “wave”... it’s a great Facebook page but it is not a legit media source. Because it steals everything from the true journalist.. and Hawkeyefbbb is the creator the Facebook page Hawkeyeheavem

I don't have a specific example but a while back I remember hearing that's what he did. Sounds like he did that exact thing to you.

Sure, besides the plagiarizing, DUIs, and lack of child support payments. Otherwise good guy.

I read it here or TOS regarding Hawkeye Heaven: the Wal-Mart of Hawkeye media.

I'm not here to judge. DUI's, maybe young/dumb mistakes? Child Support, you should pay that?

I think overall though, HH has done some good things.

Me neither. He’s deliberately stolen material from local media and claimed it as his own. He’s also tried to position the whole wave as his idea when it was posted on the HH message board.

I probably won’t change your mind on Levi but I don’t care for him. He reposts things and brands them on his own rather than retweeting on Twitter, a much more honest platform.

I guess I am just willing to cut someone a break from time to time.

yeah, suddenly the person who came up with the idea for the Wave is an afterthought as he has milked it for all its worth. this is just another example of him taking something that someone came up with and acting as if its his own creation. Pictures, stories, and now the Wave. All someone else's creation that have been been made to be seen as his own creation.

I thought the lady who thought of the wave has been credited?

I was just going to post that the Athletic is where it's going to be at in the future, they are just now starting to ramp up their CFB coverage. Great site for sports writing, they're scooping up all the great talent that's shaken out in the ESPN, and other media, realignment. Well worth the money, especially at the discounts they offer.
