If you are bored during the off season I just finished watching a 6 episode show called Last Chance U. Story of a JUCO in Mississippi that's been winning national titles with questionable kids. Pretty entertaining with a small amount about current Ole MIss QB Chad Kelly and a lot of stuff in there with assumed new Auburn starting QB and former FSU player John Franklin III

I liked it. Watched it on Netflix. Just thought I would tell anyone who is really antsy to get the season started. Gets you inside the locker room and the stuff everybody is going through with grades and pressure to win.

Heatdawg you been posting like fu**, you better bring the sh*t in future topics. LCU is awesome, in a disturbing kind of way, and it gave me tons of new motivational quotes (see above).

I thought the show was awesome. I also thought the coach was a total douchebag and can't believe he still has a job! He's won those titles because he has a bunch of D1 caliber athletes on a Juco team, certainly not because of his coaching abilities!

He didn't really do much coaching. Just yelled a lot and recruited talented players. Still cracked up that he gets in a fight with an official, gets suspended and then expected his team to be better than that and not thugs.

Will be interesting to see how these kids do at a school that won't hold their hand anymore

Im sure big time programs like Auburn see to it that star players don't suffer from grade issues. The star players that turn out not to be so great, those players are the ones that have grade issues and must leave because Auburn does it the right way.

I think this is the case at most D1 schools.

You know Iowa makes all student athletes spend manditory time at the athlete academic center? They may not hold their hands as much as EMCC in Last Chance U, but to say that they aren't holding their hand at all is a big stretch. If the athletic department is going to spend a lot of money recruiting these kids, it would be ludicrous not to implement a system to keep them eligible.

I highly doubt members of our football team are getting "I love you" texts, or special visits at their apartments from some counselor lady named Ms. Wagner. Just sayin...

Think there are any other 'special benefits' for the players from their academic advisor?

Watched it too thought it was done really well. Both showing football stuff and off the field. Their head coach reminded me of a former DL coach here at Iowa.

I use to always think how hard is it for these kids to not stay eligible and get grades at the JUCO level. Basically this series showed me why. Someone of these kids literally just don't try or just too lazy to show up to class or quite at the first moment of adversity. Found it funny how academic adviser, Ms Wagner (who is very easy on the eyes) literally making sure players had pencils for going to class.

The academics were for the most part clearly over the head of most of the players. The lack of preparation at the Jr High and High School level is appalling.

Thanks for posting. I will watch it. I need some time killing activities before the season. Especially the weekends.

I thought it was a good show. Watched all 6 episodes in a couple of settings. You see firsthand many kids who simply have no intention or thoughts of anything else beyond football. It's sad (in a way) because you can see so many of these kids having absolutely nothing to fall back on after the pigskin is put away. The fact so few athletes make it to the NFL yet for many that's the only dream they have ... Kudos for being passionate about something ... but you many of them have no Plan B.

Another thing I found to be fascinating is a guy like John Franklin III. Recruited by FSU and signed with FSU. Had issues, moves down to a JUCO to play for a year and can't beat out the local kid. 1 year later he is going to be the starter at Auburn and the kid he couldn't beat out refuses to play non D1 football and just quits. Some pretty good stories in there.

And I also thought the Academic advisor who reminded me of the coaches wife on Friday Night Lights was a little too close to the kids. Going to their dorm rooms? I'd like to have a hot academic advisor who knew where my dorm room was.

Funny you mention the QB situation ... And how one ends up at Auburn and the guy who beat him out for the starting job prefers to hunt... And agree 100% the "academic advisor" seemed a little too close to some of these kids... I definitely would not have complained if I had an advisor like that with an open-door policy! My advisor smelled like shoe polish and wore a curtain as a skirt. :D

It's a well-done show ... As you said ... "Some pretty good stories in there"

It came off as an issue about caring. I think the head coach even said "They're on time for every practice, and they're on time for every meeting, but we cannot get them to show up for class."

Franklin never had issues at FSU, he was never going to see the field as a QB. His choices were to switch position or transfer. Kid is quick and could be a Nick Marshall type player for them, but not a great passer.

yes I would know actually. Big schools will hold your hand to a point and I didn't mean to make it sound like they wouldn't still get a lot of help at their new school but not to the level of this show or even close. Some of that was flat out ridiculous. Getting multiple reminders on an assignment by your advisor, getting tracked down on campus, and getting an extension on the assignment? No way. She even told them what happened in a book the players never read and had a test over which seems unethical. I would like to think that Auburn is at least a little more challenging than the classes they were taking at EMCC.
