OT: Nebraska Sports Writer Gets Reality Check on Nebby Football

They have gone through a boat load of coaches thinking that's all it takes to make them great again. Frost will probably improve Nebraska but to make them an Alabama, I doubt it. They still have to recruit to Nebraska which has changed since the 80's and 90's. Even Notre Dame can't capture the greatness they once where and back in the day they where probably as big as Nebraska. I think Jim Harbaugh has found at Michigan that turning around a blue blood program is even difficult there.

Harbaugh gets too little respect at Michigan. Battling injuries during this down year and running in the B1Gs strongest division, he is still 28-10, with two 10-3 seasons and an 8-4. Watching their games it’s clear that they are a well-coached, motivated contender.

Nebraska doesn’t expect to be Alabama. There has never been anything like that team and the entire SEC has become a coaching round table because of it.

If Frost can get the teams to fight hard, have the on-field results make sense and, yes, make the Wisconsin and Iowa games matter most years, he’d be seen as a total success. This result seems similar to what Harbaugh has achieved.

I think key for harbaugh, Frost and even fleck is they need qb to be successful. I know it’s an obvious statement but that’s tough thing coming into different program if you don’t have qb that fits your system and style can make it difficult first few years. We saw after rudock an injury to speight not much left for Michigan. Nebraska had Riley get Armstrong who didn’t fit and finally got his pocket passer in Lee and now Frost comes in wanting exact opposite with dual threat. In gopher land just a mess with 5th yr sr walk on and mobile guy who couldn’t throw and left and now all their chips are in on a juco Guy.

Blue blood essentially means old money. Say what you want about Nebraska but they are old money in college football. Make all the comparisons to Minnesota you want but Nebraska has the 4th most wins all time. 200+ more than Minnesota.

Harbaugh's recruiting classes have been among the top in the nation. He's expected to beat OSU. Not only has he not done that but he's having trouble beating MSU. His teams are not expected to rebuilt but reload as OSU does. So yes he had injuries but all teams do. With his so called 4-5 star players on his roster they are suppose to step in and step up and win.

Tell Nebraska fans their not suppose to compete for a NC every year. Bo got fired for only winning 9-10 games a year and the same with Solich. No they're not going to be satisfied with just beating Iowa and Wisconsin every year. Nebraska fans will only be satisfied with winning Big 10 Championships and making the playoffs. That's what they expect out of their great hire of Frost.

I believe Nebraska can come back to the point where they can be a Big West contender each year, and possibly win a Big championship at some point, but I think the days of National Championship caliber teams in Lincoln are long gone. The Big ten is much tougher then the old Big eight, and Nebraska really has not been relevant since the Big eight days, they certainly were not after it became the Big 12. Sorry if that offends our friendly foes to the west. As much as I enjoy a Hawkeye beat down of the Huskers, it would be great for the conference if they can get back to being a contender in the West, it makes the whole conference better.

They haven’t been relevant in past 15 years basically since turn of the century. Last 14 years they haven’t had one season with less than 4 losses.

I guess playing in 2 national championship games after the Big 12 started doesn’t count? I would say the retirement of Osborne and decline of Solich had more to do with Nebraska’s downfall.

Agree with this. The win over Nebraska this year felt hollow to me. Would rather beat a good Nebraska team than the group of misfits we stomped this year.

I would agree with the Tom Osborne aspect of it, course it also makes a difference when people are voting for a champion instead of settling it on the field. I'm glad they finally remedy that.

I live in Nebraska and talk to hundreds of Husker fans and I can assure you that expectations have been tempered.

That said, ‘just’ beating Iowa and Wisconsin every year would mean regular trips to the CCG. A Big Ten title would be very significant for this team and Frost will have permanent employment if he keeps us legitimately in the hunt.

An intelligent post.

LOL... I first heard this I thought "Shasta"..... RC is giving them a little too much credit. RC is a less known brand but quite good, now Shasta......
Do you remember Elf brand?
Who sold that, Hy-Vee? Is it still available? Lol
My Grandma was a tightwad, she used to buy it.

I can’t speak for OP, but perhaps since 99% of Iowa fans are banned on Nebby board, any fusker talk needs to take place here.

They do enough Iowa posting for everyone. You should have seen the post after the lost to Northern Illinois. It was titled “Atleast we didn’t lose to NDSU”.

This. Or better yet, Hy Vee Cola. Iowa is RC Cola, underrated good. And we're like RC on tap at home: better than the big brands.
