When do they pull the trigger on Belien? I realize he took them to the NC a few years ago, but his teams have not performed very well the last couple of years. He has had some of the "best talent" in the league and they continually under perform.

This year his team looked good in the non-conf and then have just fallen apart in conference play.

Totally different question... what would it take to get fired at Iowa if you took a team to a NC game?

I like Beilein. Hope he sticks around. I also like that Fran seems to have his number.

Hahahaha. NEVER!

We are talking one of the classiest and most respected in the business. And by the way, a no doubt Hall of Famer.

Good joke though

I know a lot of MICH fans and work with a few and they all want him out. Saying he has done nothing since the NC game. Apparently he is the polar opposite of Harbaugh in terms of recruiting and running a program. Just heard a couple of them talking after the Iowa game that he may need to go.

I mean 89-77 in conference with 2 big Ten titles and the NC in 2013. I realize he is a good guy and good coach, but are fans going to get restless in Ann Arbor. I guess he did make the Tourney last year (last 4 in). I don't think they make it this year.

I don't think he lasts much longer. Michigan fans are a "what have you done for me lately" group and just getting to the tourney isn't good enough. Plus, he hasn't been recruiting up to Michigan standards. He has three commits for next year and only one is listed in the top 100 at #97. None of the recruits are bigs.

Not long ago we could have read the same thing about Matt Painter at Purdue.

The real culprits, imo, as to being long lived and enjoying questionable success are Tom Crean and Thad Matta. Ohio State, with what, 14 million residents and Ohio State is the only Big Ten team in the entire state! And Crean, just compare Swannigan to Bryant and the development of one and not the other.

I think we can find much worse coaches to give the stink eye to than Beilein.

He lives and dies by the 3. A lot of teams do these days, but Michigan is on the extreme end of the spectrum. When hitting, they can shoot people out of the gym. When not, they look like a group of rec league players trying to get shots up before a teammate does.

His teams usually go through a bad stretch, then get on a roll. Irvin not the LeBron or Chris Paul or whoever they compared him to his freshman year.

I also don't think Michigan has the brand it used to. MSU has lapped them more times than I can count. Odd to see MSU and OSU struggling given the in-state talent both have access to.

I would agree. Growing up for me, Michigan was THE brand in the state of Michigan and it wasn't close. Glen Rice teams, Fab 5, etc......MSU was decent, but Michigan was easily the national brand.

Surprised to hear that. I think they were really set up for success after the NC game, but since then they've had a rash of injuries and bad luck. Still, 2013 isn't THAT long ago, I'd be surprised to see him on the hot seat this year or next. He's a very good coach.

I just brought it up because we watched the game together and my buddies were pissed. They are donors for the U of M and they were just stating their opinions that day. Now they lost at Illinois and at home Maryland.

They kept talking about how good Harbaugh was and blah blah blah. But I was just curious how other people felt on the topic. Personally I think at least 2 more years. if they go thorough a 4 year stretch with their only tourney appearance (last 4 in) probably will be fired.

Belien has earned the right to leave on his own terms.
He will decide when he takes retirement. He will not
be fired. The hire/fire mentality is not a formula for
continuity in Michigan basketball.

Belien and Crean produce the same kinds of teams with the same kinds of results, except Crean doesn't have a title game feather in his cap.

Don't forget that Michigan basketball had gone NINE straight years without a NCAA berth before Beilein showed up. They'd be crazy to lose him.
