I've seen it referenced on here that Georgia Tech was very confident going into the game. Do you remember anything in particular? I was younger and really only remember the game ad a few Georgia Tech fans thinking they would win.

That was one of my favorite bowl games ever. The astonishing thing was our defense shut their run down totally and they never threatened us until stanzi made a mistake and threw a pic and wegher was awesome, hate to use us and we but im typing on crappy phone

Clayborne was a monster! Stopped the vaunted triple-option! I recall Ferentz calling them Virginia Tech rather than Georgia Tech in one interview.

Vegas had them favored as well so it wasn't just their fans. They won the ACC (while we were runner-up in the Big10). They had several wins over ranked teams that year. They had Demarius Thomas (now Broncos wide receiver) and a stud running back. They had reason to be confident.

My recollection is a lot of attention prior to the game was focused on the Georgia Tech wishbone offense.
One thing that struck me watching the game was hardly ever saw Iowa's safetys Sash and Greenwood. Iowa stopped the run at the line of scrimmage and Georgia Tech's passing game was not very good when they had to pass.

Jonathan Dwyer (RB, Georgia Tech) played for a couple years on the Steelers then played for the Cardinals for part of 2014 before he landed on the IR. Then he beat his girlfriend and that was the end of that career.

Thanks guys. One of my favorite memories was Clayborn and the team throwing oranges into the crowd, although I didn't catch one. :)

Norm Parker references that he defended this scheme in the 50s. Hawks maintained gap assignment and took away the dive play. GTs wheels fell off the buggy soon thereafter.

Angerer had a great game as well.

Loved the props that Norm used in his press conference. That was classic. Is it out there on you tube?

The best part was the GT fans coming on our boards before the game to try to explain all the complexities of the triple option. " You see the quarterback can give to the up back.........or give it to the tailback....or ". " It's unstoppable. "
It pretty much was until Norm came along.

I distinctly remember the Press Citizen running some article a few days before the game about the GT punter, and how he'd only punted some stupid low number of times all year. Theme was, "if we see this kid a couple times, the Hawks will be doing well."

Kid ended up punting like 5 times in the first half.

Ga Tech ended up with around 150-160 total offensive yards. They completed 2 passes in that game...Norm OWNED them with his scheme...

Tech actually punted more in the Orange Bowl than they had total all season.

I went to that game down in Miami, it was a great game besides it being the coldest Orange Bowl ever. It was hard to get a vibe of how the Georgia Tech fans felt about the game because there was so few of them. We saw some while tailgating and invited them over because we had barely seen any of their fans all day.

I drove across Alligator Alley to Miami for the game and it was a cold day for South Florida. Iowa completely dominated Ga. Tech on defense. I never felt the game was ever in doubt. I saw a lot of Big Ten fans in South Florida who went tot he game to support Iowa. I never saw any Ga. Tech fans.

I went with the family. At the big Budweiser tailgate, four Georgia guys commented to our daughter that they "never heard of Iowa and couldn't find it on the map." She told them they overpaid for their Tech educations.

Oh, memories. At the tailgate I just remember being able to spot GA Tech fans by the sporadic sweater vests and khakis. Apparently that's a Georgia football thing, but it looked ridiculous. Second, I remember before the game they played the commercials for the two universities, and when Iowa's came on, the Iowa fans in our mixed section broke out in "We've got Brokaw!" with him narrating.
