OT: Ref blindsided by HS football players

Those guys should be expelled from school. This may also constitute as assault and be punishable by the courts.

Agreed!!! Total idiots. If this school EVER lets either play another down this year, there is something seriously wrong.

This year or any other year that they are still in HS. Like said above should not be allowed to play In any HS sports any more. Just an absolutely horrid lack of conduct or sportsmanship. I may be harsh but also believe if either one or both are over the age of 18 they should be charge with assault as adults.

Why shouldn't they be charged regardless of age?

As bad as this sounds, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. Kids losing their heads and doing something stupid like that.

Unreal. I've never seen anything like that before.

Hope the ref was ok, and the players see some jail time.

Because there's little chance that it can be shown that a crime was committed?
WTF are you talking about? They have at least 2 angles of very clear video footage. That is plain and simple assault.

In fact, a good lawyer could probably even make a solid case for attempted murder. But that would be a bit of a stretch but not entirely out of the question.

IMO, they could easily be charged with a felony

The punishment should be the same as if they had hit a security guard at the mall. This had nothing to do with football.

Battery for sure -which is defined as any unlawful physical contact. The question then becomes whether or not the contact here was unlawful.

From a civil legal perspective, participants in athletic contests (including officials) assume the risk of physical contact or injuries resulting from the normal activities related to the sport. The assumed risk pertains to activities and conduct which are expected and reasonably foreseeable. Participants are deemed to have given implied consent to any foreseeable risk.

Can criminal intent be proved? The clip very clearly proves that beyond reasonable doubt IMO.

They have 2 angles of a kid running into somebody that was in the path between him and another player whom it's reasonable to assume had the ball at the time

Oh, and there's some stupid headline to a video that assumes intent. How that assumption was made is anybody's guess, but the mouth breathers on this site seem to be eating it up

Listening to the First Take lady in the clip reminds me that some people just don't get it.

What I was getting at was if they are Juviess then they could possible face probation until 18, but if over 18 then they could face jail time and if found to be a felony it could follow them for the rest of their lives. IMO the video clip shows plenty to convict them on, especially the second kid who came in and speared him with his helmet. I also believe there where some laws pasted not to long ago that came down harder on people who assaulted officials. So yes they should be charged regardless of age, but the penalty is a lot harsher as an adult. Definitely shouldn't be able to play any kind of sport in HS anymore. Just my two cents.

You must not have watched it.

Both were intentional. The 2nd kid freaking speared the ref with his helmet and the first braced for them impact

There was no path to the ball. The ball wasnt close. They both were hitting the guy intentionally AINEC.

Exactly. Intent is clearly evident on the tape with regard to both players. The 2nd player is more obvious. There is no objective prosecutor who would see it differently. A jury would convict in a matter of minutes (juries almost uniformly decide in favor law enforcement and/or adult authorities even when the evidence is legitimately disputed).

Not sure if serious

This type of behavior is a microcosm of our present day society. There is a total lack of respect for authority figures. I truly hope they throw the book at these thugs to send a strong message.

Win at all costs?

The two Texas HS players suspended, and maybe charges are next?

Not sure it was a win at all costs situation. The summary included with the clip stated that there were a couple bad calls and that two of the player's teammates were ejected on the play right before the ambush. It appears they were going to get revenge with the ref no matter what the score.

Should find out in the next day or two what will happen. As of now, they are suspended from the team and I believe from school. Should be more on the news tonight about it

I heard last night the coach was being questioned with the thought that he could have told the players to do it. It's not out of the question, it was very well choreographed and executed.

I spent 19 years in the SA area, from 94 to 2013 and I remember 2 separate incidents in the late 90s ( couple of years apart. Don't remember what years or high schools ) when 2 SA area HS football players assaulted the refs. One throw his helmet and struck the ref and the other head butted the ref with his helmet on. Never herd what charges were filled if any, but I do remember one was a Texas commit and the other I believe was a Texas Tech commit. Don't know if either went on to their colleges or not, never herd anything else about it after the initial news reports.

Why shouldn't they be charged regardless of age?

if they are under 18 they shouldn't be prosecuted in adult court-- the people who think that are grossly exaggerating it-- there is nothing more there than misdemeanor assault and battery-- not something for which you send children to adult prison

I'm not surprised that it happened (there are stories out there of how some crazy/thuggish AAU/non-school youth baseball coaches/players "approach" umps in the parking lot after games), but I'm not surprised that it doesn't happen more often on the actual field of play.

This scenario is more than just "stupid." It is absolutely stupid, but we need a better word for it. "Stupid" is escalating a shoving match with your opponent after the whistle has blown and everyone else is returning to the huddle. This is a violent assault (as well as a cheap shot) carried out in front of many witnesses. Do you remember when George W Bush ducked a shoe? This is that kind of stupid.

Not to look at it from the other side, but these are "boys". Obviously they are lacking of character and morals, but the saddest thing of all is that the coaches "could be" the strongest male role models in their lives and they've now lost that guidance. God save us if the coach told them to do it.

Spot on!! Society is slipping into the abyss, it's really going down hill fast boys. Afraid things are going to get very ugly soon.
