Excerpts below:
Behold The Athletic’s pint-sized guide to what’s on tap this fall and beyond: The top 21 (because 20 wasn’t quite enough) college towns based on local craft beer options. Our panel — college writers Brian Bennett, Scott Dochterman and Brian Hamilton — joined forces to celebrate achievements in sudsy refreshments and, hopefully, point you in the right direction on your next road trip.
6. Iowa City, Iowa
From 2012 through ’16, Iowa City ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in Princeton Review’s annual party school rankings. That meant cheap beer and lots of it. It’s still awfully prevalent around the famed Ped Mall, but coinciding with Iowa City’s recent slide on the dubious party list is the rise in craft breweries. Beer drinkers are possibly maturing in Iowa City, and with Big Grove, ReUnion and Backpocket breweries putting down roots in the last eight years, it’s completely understandable. All carry the well-rounded assortments. ReUnion’s Dunkel will make one yell “Prosit!” every month of the year, while both Big Grove and Backpocket salute the college football team with the 1939 and Hawktoberfest blends, respectively. Then with Red’s in nearby North Liberty, Lion Bridge (very Czech) and Thew in Cedar Rapids and the Amana Colonies’ Millstream Brewery, keg beer finally met its match in eastern Iowa.
Drink this: Millstream’s Shild Brau — one of the oldest craft beers anywhere — marries the proper rich malty flavor with a smoothness perfect for the Amanas’ incredible Oktoberfest opener or flipping burgers on your deck. — S.D.
